Blogging, Word Verification & Spam Comments

Anyone else getting spammed by annoying comments?  Blogger is really good at catching them so they never actually show up on my blog but I get an email sent to me anytime someone comments on my blog.

Here are a few recent spam comments I've received.

This one cracked me up:

Amazing! This blog looks just like my old one! It's on a completely different subject but it has pretty much the same page layout and design. Wonderful choice of colors! Feel free to visit my web site:

Since I have a custom designed blog I don't think it could possibly look anything like her old blog.

Here's another one that was on a post that didn't have a video:

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You clearly know what youre talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your weblog when you could be giving us something informative to read? Also visit my web site:
Write more?  The title of my blog is I Am A Reader, Not A Writer!

Personally I really dislike word verification/captcha so I don't have it enabled on my blog.  I get quite a bit of traffic on my site and haven't had too many issues with spammers.  I get a couple spam comments each day but they go right into my spam folder.  To be safe I have my settings so that comment moderation is enabled on all posts over 14 days old. Even still Blogger catches nearly all spam comments even on newer posts and they end up in my spam folder instead of being published.

Do you have many problems with spammers commenting on your blog?

Do you use word verification on your comments?  If so why?  Have you tried turning it off?  If so what happened?

Do these comments actually do any good and make it through to actually be posted anywhere?

  1. I don't have CAPTCHA on my blog. I honestly really dislike blogs that do because any kind of spam-detection filter/plugin should catch spammy posts immediately and prevent them from being posted. Especially if you use Arkismet on WordPress. Arkismet catches all my spam comments immediately! And WordPress doesn't e-mail me when spam comments get posted and marked as spam, so that's nice.

Here's the funniest spam comment I've gotten. It was caught by my spam filter, but I usually check in on those now and then:

"Hallo i am a spammy commenter from somecrapsite.com - i love your post/entry/blog/money/girlfriend/toilet. please approve this comment so i can be getting more hits to my crappy site."

    That totally cracked me up!!!

  2. I just literally laughed out loud. I'm new to blogger so I barely have any traffic on my page. No one knows who I am. This post makes me happy I dont get spammed!

  3. Sooo funny! I don't have verification enabled either (bec I sometimes get annoyed with trying to figure out all those slopy letters, i figure i should spare my readers the pain :))

you're right - the spam folder is a godsend!

  5. I do have captcha. And actually I think I've had it since a few months after I started my blog. Someone commented, saying they'd rather not have it, so I took it out for one day and got spammed. So it's really worked for me, and while I hate to have that inconvenience for my readers, I'd rather not get spammed. But I guess that's just me :) I love those comments though; it's doubtful that she had your blog design as her old one lol

  6. I never use captcha. I get the occasional spam but blogger catches it. I just started using Disqus for comments today and hope I have continued success. Personally i struggle with those blogs that use captcha..i cannot read the darn things..lol

  7. Oh my gosh yes! I got the first comment on my blog & thought "I designed my own blog there's no way it could look like yours!" & word verification *shudders* I can't stand it! I've actually not commented on a blog post I loved just because I couldn't get the captcha to work.

  8. I don't use Captcha because I hate it when others do. I get the occasional spam, but so far, not too many. The ones I've had have all been in the guise of "Found your site; love it-wanna check out my site?" irritating, but not the end of the world. I usually catch them before it's too late.

  9. I was getting a lot of spam comments on my previous blog. I haven't seen much yet for the new blog, but I just started it less than two weeks ago, so time will tell. I don't have any form of word verification on my comments, so I tend to just empty the spam folder every so often. Wordpress is pretty good about catching that stuff.

  10. Like everyone else above, I don't like or use captcha or word verification. I only have gotten two or three spam comments in my eleven months of blogging, and none has popped up when I switched to Disqus.

I understand when a blogger puts up comment approval/moderation, but I don't really prefer it.

  11. OMG! Yes! I hate word verification too and haven't had any problems with spam until a week or so ago. And it's the same type of inane comments that you showed. Blogger caught them all and didn't post them, but I was also annoyed by getting a crud-load of e-mails. I think I got 7 different spam comments on the same post from almost 2 months ago in ONE DAY.

I finally enabled my word verification just to get it to stop. I'll give it some time and then disable again because I seriously hate word verification.

  12. I'm not using word verification and most spam is caught by Blogger. Here's my favorite so far:

"I don't even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good. I do not know who you are but certainly you are going to a famous blogger if you aren't already ;) Cheers! Look at my homepage"

  13. I've never gotten spam comments like that. They look so real. We just transferred to Disqus and I like it just as much as regular comments.

  14. There has been a spike of this type of "comment" on my blog lately, although they mostly go straight to the spam folder. They're usually pretty hilarious and ridiculous like yours!

  15. I have it turned off because it seriously annoys me to play the "guessing game" when commenting on blogs that have Captcha enabled.
Frankly, I only receive spam maybe once or twice a month so I don't see a need to use Captcha AT ALL. And yes, some spam comments just as funny as yours - the latest one was complimenting the cute cat photo in my post. Needless to say, there was no cat photo in the post :-D!

  16. I have never had much of a problem with spam comments on my blog. A few here and there, but never so many that it's obnoxious to go in and delete them. I hate CAPCHA so I don't think I'll ever use it.

  17. I dislike captcha but I understand why some bloggers use it. It's easier to just delete spam or to block comments which are derogatory.

  18. I recently got my first spam comment! It was actually kind of exciting, because I guess it means I'm getting more traffic. :P It was on my review of Offbeat Bride (and had nothing to do with my own wedding plans), so the comment was hilarious:

"awesome photos ... such an adorable wedding dress. love it.Thanks for sharing all these blogs and phots are very useful to every one"

followed by a link. I laughed so hard.

Please don't turn on Captcha! I'd rather delete spam comments every day than have people not comment because it's too annoying. And Captcha is highly discouraged during read-a-thons (especially Dewey's), which I do a lot, so I just keep it off all the time.

  19. The spam comments seem to come in bunches. A few weeks ago a got about 30 a day for a few days but since then...only one or two. I am on wordpress now and akismet catches just about all of them.

  20. I get the occasional spam. But Blogger catches them. I don't have Captcha on. I'm not totally bothered by it, but I'd rather not have to deal with straining my eyes or having others strain their eyes when commenting at my blog.

  21. I'm not a van of Captcha or word verification so I won't put it on my blog but I'll still comment on blogs who have it. I've seen an increase in spam comments lately as compared to months ago.

  22. I've been getting these every day for the last month or so. I can't stand Captcha either, but I have it set for me to approve the comments that go through. I didn't have faith that Blogger would catch them all - but maybe I will change that and see.
