Book Giveaway & Author Interview: Venom by K.C. Grant

Welcome back to Author K.C. Grant.

Bio:

K.C. Grant was born in rural Idaho, but has made Utah her home for most of her life. After serving an LDS Spanish-speaking mission to Anaheim, California, USA, she returned and continued her studies at Weber State University, participating in a study abroad program that allowed her to study at the Centro Mexicano Internacional in Michoacan, Mexico. She has been a freelance writer for eight years. Much of her work appears in family-oriented magazines such as LDSLiving, Latter-Day Woman, Back Home, Parents & Kids, and Natural Life and The Deseret News/Mormon Times. She is currently the president of the Bountiful chapter of the League of Utah Writers and is a member of the Association for Mormon Letters and LDStorymakers. Though raising her children is still her most important task, she combines it with the demanding job of working out the numerous plots she has for future novels. She and her husband of sixteen years love to travel and scout out new settings for books. While ancient Mexico was the setting for her first published novel, Abish: Daughter of God, which was released by Covenant in 2010 and its sequel, Abish: Mother of Faith, released March 2011--modern Mexico was perfect for her suspense novel titled, Venom, to be released January 2012. Other publications include a short story recently published in Covenant's seasonal compilations, How Will Christmas Find Us? and A Christmas to Remember by various LDS authors.

INTERVIEW:
What is one book everyone should read?
My favorite classic is Jane Eyre, but I also love anything by Stephen King!

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Rewrite Woman: I must have some superpower that way because my editor never fails to make me do rewrites and somehow I manage to do them!

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
To freeze time because there's never enough of it.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Peppermint stick, which I only eat in December.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
I would love to meet Marilyn Monroe. She's such an enigma--forced to play the "dumb blonde" but really quite intelligent.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
I love yogurt and granola.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl

One food you would never eat?
Anything still moving! Otherwise, I love ethnic food--Indian and Thai are my favorites.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Because even the main character's 'inner voice' would tell you to. (You'll have to read it to find out what that means.)

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Venom is set up to be a series that continues with the main characters but can be read separately. My next idea is to look at the drug trafficking situation at our northern border.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I was a reader first and after a while, anyone who loves to read that much starts to wonder if they can write a book.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I loved the Anne of Green Gables series, so much that my first attempt at writing involved a dark-haired talkative young girl who was an orphan.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Read everything you can get your hands on, find what inspires you and then write!

If you could live any where in the world where would it be?
I'm very partial to California and could easily "set up shop" in a beach time in the Central or Southern areas

Favorite quote from a movie?
"We're gonna need a bigger boat." Jaws

Do you prefer a bunch of small gifts or one big expensive one?
Lots of small

What is you favorite way to spend a rainy day?

Book Review: The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

Title: The Body Finder
Author: Kimberly Derting
Series: Book 1 of 4
Publisher: HarperTeen
Released: March 16, 2010
Website: http://www.kimberlyderting.com/

Book Summary:
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself.

This was a creepy, suspenseful, romantic read.  A great mix of mystery, romance and fantasy.

Most of the book is told from Violet's point of view.  Violet hears "echoes" of both the dead and of those who've killed others.  For the most part this unique ability usually finds her digging up the bones of dead animals but occasional she stumbles across something much more horrifying.  No one knows of her ability except for her family and childhood friend Jay.

I loved watching Violet's relationship with Jay develop into something more than just friendship.  I'm a succor for the "best friend turned more than friend" kind of relationships.

Most of the story is told from Violet's perspective but there are short snippets thrown in that are written from the mind of a serial killer, that's that creepy part.

For those who scare easily you might not want to read this while home alone at night.  I don't scare easily and enjoy an occasional suspenseful, creepy book so I thoroughly enjoyed this one.  I'll definitely be reading the sequels.

Book Review: Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Title: Beauty Queens
Author: Libba Bray
Series: None
Publisher: Scholastic
Released: May 24, 2011
Website: http://libbabray.com/

Book Summary

The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner.

What's a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.

First off this is only a partial review because I didn't finish this book. I only made it through the first 7 chapters of Beauty Queens.

This book is irreverent, sarcastic and laugh out-loud funny. It was great fun for an hour or two as the narrator of the audio version gives an amazing preformance.

Unfortunately I don't think I can make it through 400 pages (14 hours) of mockery, shallowness and sheer stupidity. By chapter seven the language that up until then had been bleeped out (Beauty Queens don't swear) was no longer being bleeped and it seemed like the subject matter was taking a turn. What had been funny was starting to get old and instead of laughing I was rolling my eyes.

Beauty Queens was a Best of 2011 pick by one of the Best I've Read Blogs so I gave it a try.  There are many people who love this book and I totally understand the mixed reviews. There is no denying that Libba Bray is a great writer. I really enjoyed her Gemma Doyle trilogy but 400 pages of Beauty Queens was just too much for me.

Rating: 2.5 Stars - Take it or Leave it

Content: language, lesbianism, innuendo, crude humor (after reading a few reviews my understanding is there is a lot more content in later chapters)

In one sentence, why should we read your book?
In a world of negative ads and mudslinging, Nitt Witt Hill takes a more positive to the world of politics, filling it with humor and showing it’s what you have underneath that provides you the greatest support (and we’re not just talking bras here).

What inspired you to be a writer?
Just a desire to make people laugh at a time when the news would make it seem there is little to laugh about. I’m not sure why it is that adults laugh so much less than children. Hopefully, Nitt Witt Hill, to some small extent, remedies that.

What is one book everyone should read?
Certainly not any of the political books on the market which do nothing but attack, attack, attack. Read a love story, a mystery, a thriller or if you want to have some wicked laughs all in fun at the expense of the political system in general, read Nitt Witt Hill. The book I’ve probably read and reread most in my life would be Tai Pan, by James Clavell.

What was your favorite book when I was a child/teen?
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. I must still be a child because some of my favorite books today are the entire Harry Potter series.

What is your dream cast for your book?
For laughs, the entire cast of characters currently in politics, from Sarah Palin to Michele Bachmann, President Obama, John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly and all the candidates who’ve been running for office. The main characters of Mark and his dog Twain would have to be played by Stephen Colbert and one of those talking dogs on YouTube.

What is your favorite quote?
It’s one from Mark Twain. “Life is short, break the rules. Forgive quickly. Kiss slowly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that makes you smile.”

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Certainly Mark Twain as well as J. R. Rowling and James Clavell. But also Robert Parker, Dan Brown, John Sandford, Lee Child, Michael Connelly, and Robert Ludlum.

Finishing the sentence, the one book I wish I had written would be...
a non-fiction book entitled, “How I Brought About World Peace, and Eliminated Poverty, World Hunger and Disease.”

Favorite places to travel?
My favorite places to travel are to return to places where I once lived when I was a starving student hitchhiking in Europe, London, Paris, Venice and the island of Corfu in Greece.

What’s the best writing advice anyone has ever given you?
Don’t listen to what others tell you at writer’s conferences.

Nitt Witt Hill

What's causing the country and now the President to lose their crackers and voters to elect Nitt Witts? Clowns and Turkeys are running Congress and the Nitt Witts are everywhere. But will one more Clown in Congress make any difference? Would the country be better off with some real Turkeys instead of those Clowns? Or are the Nitt Witts destined to run Washington? Set on historic Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria, California and Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., Sebastian Gibson's satire paints the absurdities of the political world and of daily life with his unique sense of humor. The top political parties have degenerated into the Nitt Witts, the Turkeys and the Clown Party and the country is becoming deranged. Unless Mark Twain (Mark, a political consultant and his dog, Twain) can determine what's making people so neurotic and make sense of the madness, riots may cause the country's collapse. The Clowns are running for office with the slogan, "One more Clown in Congress probably won't make any difference." The Turkey candidates are running against the Clowns with their counter slogan, "Isn't it time we had some real Turkeys in office instead of those Clowns?" But it's the Nitt Witt Party who may have the most appeal to voters with their slogan, "Elect a Nitt Witt and see what some real Nitt Witts can do in Washington." Meanwhile, believing a lightweight metal alloy in bras when placed in contact with the wearer's skin is causing electrostatic interference with aircraft navigation equipment and with people themselves, Homeland Security and the Senate take action to prohibit the wearing of bras on airplanes and their sale in America. Still, the situation fails to improve and the country is on the verge of losing its collective mind. With the rhetoric of political parties at a level never seen before ("Turkeys are made for stuffing, Clowns are for Congress") and as protesters riot over the right to wear or go without bras and try to take control of the White House it's up to Mark and his dog Twain to determine the cause of the country's mental imbalance and find a way to save the country. Read the novel that's making Washington laugh so hard, Congress can't accomplish anything. It all begins and ends on Nitt Witt Hill.

Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway: Time Slice by Kerry Downing

Welcome to Author Kerry Downing
Kerry Downing set out to become a meteorologist, but was hooked by the world of computers instead, becoming a systems analyst and programmer. Astronomy and science fiction are his passions. He’s been gazing at the stars at all hours of the night since the age of 10, when he received his first telescope. As for science fiction, Arthur C. Clarke and his brand of “it really seems as if it could happen” has always been his favorite. In the 90s, Kerry found the third love of his life: his wife, Lucy. They live in St. Louis, Missouri, with their five children. Time Slice is Kerry’s second science-fiction novel. His self-published, debut work is The Collective.

INTERVIEW
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
1) My Kindle (I’m sure I’d have a lot of free time to read!)
2) A knife (Pretty sure I’d get hungry and need some way to get food…a knife could help out there)
3) Matches (I’ve tried to create fire by rubbing 2 sticks together and, if it can be done, I’m NOT capable of doing it! And, I hate raw food…especially that which I killed myself with my trusty knife from item 2) above.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I’ve thought about this one quite a bit over the years, and it always comes down to a choice between flying and being invisible.
When I was young, being invisible would have won out. I always wanted to be able to get away from my older brother and sister and invisibility would have helped out a lot!
Now that I’m older (not old, mind you, just older), I would choose flight. Soaring through the sky would be awesome! Not to mention the time I’d save by not being stuck in traffic on the way to work.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
This is an easy one: chocolate, hands down. Although vanilla with some kind of caramel striped through it is pretty darn tasty, too.

Night owl, or early bird?
Left to my own devices, I’d be a night owl. I always was growing up and would still be to this day if I didn’t have to be bothered by mundane tasks such as making a living.
So, for now, I get up at 5:30 am…something I never thought I’d do when I was a kid. But don’t confuse this with me now being an early bird. Oh no, far from it. I’d say that currently, I’m neither a night owl nor an early bird. I hit my peak around 11 am and, unfortunately, it only lasts for 15 minutes or so. So if you need anything from me, ask between 11 and 11:15 in the morning, okay?

Pet Peeves?
At the risk of sounding like an old curmudgeon (and one with road-rage at that), my single biggest pet peeve is people who can see the traffic signs saying that a lane is closed ahead, but think they are more important than everyone else and continue on in the soon-to-close lane, knowing good and well that they’ll be able to force their way into the rest of the traffic at the last minute.
I can’t continue on with this particular rant because I can feel my blood pressure rising.

Skittles or M&Ms?
Skittles = candy for children
M & Ms = little pieces of heaven for the discriminating palate

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
TIME SLICE is science-fiction with heart.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I’ve enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember, but never thought seriously about tackling the writing of an entire novel.
That changed when I read Stephen King’s book ON WRITING. I bought it as a gift for my wife who thought that she might want to try her hand at writing a book. ON WRITING made me believe that I could do it. If you’ve ever thought that you have a novel in you screaming to get out, I’d suggest that you pick up a copy of this book. It’s very inspirational and helpful.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
A book signing where two young people came up and wanted their picture taken with me because I was “the coolest person in the book store.” How can you top that?

What is your favorite Quote?
“It takes more courage to be happy than it does to be sad.”
I don’t remember where I first read this, but it’s so true. Most people don’t know how to be happy, and I count myself among them at times. Why is it that being sad, depressed, and upset comes so naturally to most of us, and when we do feel happy we almost immediately feel guilty about it? I’d say it was my Catholic upbringing, but I’m not Catholic, so it must be something else.
I’m open to any theories you all may have on this…seriously…

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
First thing I wanted to be was, get this, the top bunk in a bunk bed. I remember wanting it very much, although I don’t remember why.
Next, I wanted to be (and still kind of do) an over-the-road truck driver. In fact, my brother and I used to visit the local businesses when trucks were making deliveries to get the truck driver’s autographs. Most of them thought we were kidding, but they finally came around and signed something for us.
After that (from about 3rd grade through college), I wanted to be a meteorologist. I graduated in 1982 with a degree in meteorology and haven’t used it in any type of career since then. But, it’s always a great conversation piece. I mean, how many meteorologists do you know?

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Who: Tom Hanks. Why? He always plays such great roles, and he seems to have a real interest in the word around him. Kind of like me. Plus, I’d probably get to meet him which would be a real kick.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
This is an easy one. My favorite author of all time is Arthur C. Clarke. He’s why I wanted to write science-fiction. I wish I could write even a little bit as believably as he did.
Second would be Stephen King. Although I don’t really like blood and gore, many of his books are just such great stories that I can overlook small things like decapitations and the living dead. They just become minor nuisances.

What do you do in your free time?
In my free time, I like to hike. My wife and I recently bought a book called “60 Hikes within 60 Miles of St. Louis.” We’re slowly but surely working our way through the book.

What's your favorite season/weather?
Spring would be my favorite season. I’ve always enjoyed the wild weather that comes around during the spring, not to mention that the temperature finally gets above freezing and there’s still daylight left after I get home from work.

Favorite places to travel?
My favorite place to travel is the San Francisco Bay area. Specifically, north of San Fran in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Lots of great hiking there as well as magnificent scenery. If it didn’t cost a small fortune to live there, I would.

The Traveler solicits Roy's help in recovering an object invented by his murdered father and beyond his own reach. Roy is his last hope.

At first it seems that the Traveler's wish might be easily granted. But after Roy's wife Emily becomes ill and his daughter's long-held resentments rise to the surface, he can no longer "travel" at a moment's notice. He also discovers the very real physical and mental risks involved in roaming the Time Stream.

Despite the dangers, Roy is determined to help the Traveler. But he can't do it alone. Fortunately he has a loving wife and a core group of loyal friends. But first he must convince them--and his daughter--that he isn't crazy ...

As an ordained minister and motivational speaker, I've taught in the U.S. and Mexico at women's and teen conferences. Teen conferences ... sooo fun!!!!

INTERVIEW:
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I gave a workshop and a seventeen year old young man came. He tentatively asked me if I would read a little bit of his work. I said, "Sure!" I was blown away by the writing! I'm talking AMAZING writing. I told him that when he finsihed his novel, I would send it to my literary agent. The look on his face ... wow. I wish I'd captured it on film. My eyes are teary writing about it. I know you will be hearing more from him. "Hey, Micah, if you're reading this, you better get to work. You wanted to have your book done by June. That's only five months away! And I'm waiting to read it!"

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world which would it be?
Halflings. Because I'd ask each character why they don't always cooperate with my plan!!! Plus, I'd love to experience the midplane.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Unbreakable.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
DON'T GIVE UP! Keep writing. Join a writer's group like RWA. (RWA is fabulous because they have some of the best teaching available for authors at every level.) Learn the nuances of fiction. And most importantly, don't ever lose your passion for the written word.

What is your favorite Quote?
"The opportunity of a lifetime must be seized during the lifetime of the opportunity."

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
I wanted to be the queen of America. You can imagine my shock when I discovered that was not possible. My soul is still wounded.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
Hunger Games!!!!

Nickname?
Hez. Almost no one calls me that anymore, but growing up, that's what all my family called me. :)

How do you react to a bad review?
It depends. Sometimes you can snag some constructive criticism from them. But some are just people wanting to be nasty. When I see that it's maybe a disgruntled writer who hasn't been able to sell their own novel, so they go around trashing others, I don't pay any attention. I know they're hurt. I know how that feels. Some people are able to process rejection and some turn it into a vendetta. The fact is, most of the best books out there have some horrific reviews. It's just part of it. But one thing I can say is that I am thrilled that most people who read Halflings love it. And sometimes that's tough to pull off in the start of a series. So, I concentrate on the good.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
In honor of Stephen King, I went to the drug store and bought a hairdryer. (That's what he did when his first book sold BIG. It was late, he was alone. Nothing was open but the drug store and the hairdryer was the most elaborate splurge he could find.)

Favorite places to travel?
Baden, Baden Germany. It's magical. Foothills of the Black Forest, nestled near the areas where the GRIMM fairytales were written...ah, it's amazing. That's why I set the Halflings ancestral home near there. I want to share that magical experience with my readers. Scenes in Germany are peppered through the next several books.

If you had 24 hours alone how would you spend it?
If I didn't have a great book, I'd probably sit around wishing there were some people there with me. Or I might indulge in a long bath, hit a coffee shop, take a walk on the beach and plan the next Halflings novel.
Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate. Any kind of chocolate! My husband says the only person I'd ever leave him for would be a chocolatier with a coffee shop. So far, we haven't found that, so our marriage is safe. My fav is DARK chocolate. And none of that white chocolate stuff! There's no such thing as white chocolate! It's just a giant publicity stunt because vanilla is jealous! Don't drink the Kool-Aid, friends!

Regular or Diet?
Sugar. Must have sugar.

Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi. Because it tastes like it has MORE sugar!

Action or Drama?
I'm a huge X-Men fan, so I'm gonna say action! In fact, sometimes I call Halflings, X-Men meets Cinderella.

Pizza or Pasta?
Pasta! Oh man I love pasta! I like pizza too, but with teenage boys in the house, I eat way too much pizza. I could eat pasta every single day of my life!

Spontaneity or Planning Ahead?
I am spur of the moment kind of girl! We've actually moved across country on a whim. People who plan and organize ... yeah, they hate me.

Beach or Pool?
I live at the beach, so yeah, that's my pick. Also, I'm a scuba diver, so I'm just as happy on the underwater beach as the water's edge beach.

Shoes or Sandals?
I live in Southern Florida. I own summer sandals and winter sandals. (The winter sandals have a wider strap for warmth. :))

Welcome to Author Jennifer Ann Holt.
I grew up as a farm girl in Enterprise, Utah, so I have lots of experience moving sprinkler pipe and mucking out calf pens.  I can hold my own when handling a tractor as well.  I have always loved reading and really like the power of the written word to heal, bring people together, provide comfort and understanding, and uplift.

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It is a wonderful story of love and redemption.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Jane Austen and J.K. Rowling

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Make your decisions carefully. Then, once you've made a decision, make it work. Don't look back. My Grandpa Huntsman (who is now 102) gave us that advice, and I try to live by it.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?
The story of Delivering Hope is what really inspired me to make writing a priority. Once the idea came to me, I couldn't let it go. It was begging me to write it. (:

Both. My mom is Italian, after all.
