Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway: Tears of Min Brock by J.E. Lowder

Welcome to Author J.E. Lowder
I've played bass for Shania Twain, had a black rhino charge me while on safari, and I've been in the Oval Office. In high school, I went backstage to interview groups like Bob Seger, Rush and Kansas, sorta like "Almost Famous" but without Kate Hudson! As an author, I draw from all these experiences (and then some) when crafting my stories. The quote that sums me up the best is by G.K. Chesterton: "Nay, the really sane man know that he has a touch of the madman."
I'm married, the father of four wonderful children, and a proud grandfather. I currently live near Nashville, TN where I write, bike and am always on the prowl for adventure and stories.

Interview:
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Tears of Min Brock (Book 1 from War of Whispers series) is not only getting great reviews, but was inspired by my crisis of faith and subsequent discovery of deeper delight.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

War of Whispers is a four book YA fantasy series and I have all but Book 4 completed (it’s 90% done.)  I have other book ideas floating around, but for now, I’m focusing on this series.  One thing I’d love to do, since I use to produce these “back in the day,” is to record an audio book or what others are calling an audio movie book.  I’m biased, but I think my books would really come alive in this format!

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

I LOVE connecting with, and hearing from, my readers.  I recently received an email from a young girl politely asking if I could send her the .pdf of Book II because she couldn’t wait until it was released.  As much as I wanted to comply, my publisher said “no.”  I naturally worked this to my favor citing that he was the bad guy and not me!  I did promise her that she’d get a pre-released signed copy!

What is your dream cast for your book?

I’d hope that the War of Whispers movies would be cast like the Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games: use talented unknowns and add seasoned vets to round it out.  The last thing I’d want is a superstar playing Elabea or Galadin.  If you read the book, I think you’ll see why and agree.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

My Side of The Mountain.  Maybe it’s a “guy thing,” but I loved the notion of a young boy (my age) heading off into the woods, living in a tree, and having a pet falcon.  We moved a lot when I was a kid, so I could relate to the book’s hero wanting to be independent.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Oh boy, is there!  But you may need to cue some “geekazoid” music for this answer!  My background (professionally and educationally) is music, so when I was beginning the books, I chose classical pieces to represent different characters, regions, moods, etc.  It was comparable to scoring music to a film.  Gustav Holst’s The Planets is oozing with great stuff, so I used “Mars” to represent the Ebonites (my bad guys) while “Jupiter” became the theme for Allsbruth (our heroine’s homeland.)  For my hero, Galadin, I chose Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition because I love how the theme begins with a solo trumpet and ends with the full symphony, matching Galadin’s character growth throughout the books.  There’s more, but I’m afraid I’d bore your audience!

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

When I was starting out, I was inspired by this quote.  Hoping it will do the same for those reading now...
“A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit.”
 ― Richard Bach

If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?

Too easy!  1900 England at Downton Abbey.  Okay, I know it’s a fictional place, but my wife and I love the show, and since I’ve been fortunate to tour the UK when I was a musician, I’m very fond of the country.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?

Denzel Washington.  I know what you’re thinking: “But you’re white!”  True, but if he’s half the actor I think he is, this shouldn’t be a problem at all.  In fact, it might be Oscar material!

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....

To Kill a Mockingbird.  Classic book!  Great movie!  And checks still come to Harper’s mailbox... The trifecta of any author’s dreams!

Favorite places to travel?

Europe, Banff (Alberta), and sunny, sandy beaches!

Do you prefer a bunch of small gifts or one big expensive one?
Yes!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’ve stood behind President Clinton’s desk in the Oval Office.

Tears of Min Brock
When Elabea, a girl of fourteen summers, hears a whisper calling her name, she asks,"Is this proof that the land of Claire wasn't destroyed in the Dark War?" But her question ignites fear in her village. "The Oracles of the Cauldron forbid you to speak...the name! Death will come! We will be cursed!" Furthermore, when her best friend, Galadin, rallies beside her, the villagers divulge a dark secret: their fathers were the only survivors of the massacre at Min Brock. Forged as outcasts of their own homes and village, they fear the worst when the Cauldron sends warriors to destroy them. Desperate, they flee to Claire where Elabea is promised to become an all-powerful storyteller and Galadin a great warrior. But does Claire exist? And if it does, will it be an ally or a greater foe? Battling whispers, warriors and mysterious creatures, Elabea and Galadin must also contend with the darker questions about their fathers' past and the...Tears of Min Brock.

Author Interview: Best Seller by Timothy B. Sagges

Welcome to Author Timothy Sagges

Fifty-year-old actor, director and playwright, Tim Sagges has been tormented by a series of recurring night terrors since 1967, long before there was a name for such a curse. In an effort to purge himself of the unrelenting horror of his dreams, he has created Best Seller, the first in a series of nightmares exorcised from his mind and onto the page.
He is currently the owner of Eye Candy Vision in Philadelphia.

Interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
INTO THE FUTURE. I REALLY WANT TO SEE WE MANKIND EVER GETS A HANDLE ON THINGS LIKE GLOBAL WARMING AND THE DEPLETION OF FOSSIL FUELS.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
POP TARTS

Night owl, or early bird?
NIGHT OWL

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&MS

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
YOU SHOULD READ MY BOOK BECAUSE IT IS SO CRAZY ORIGINAL.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
CURRENTLY WORKING ON A SCREEN ADAPTATION OF "BEST SELLER" AND I RECENTLY FINISHED ANOTHER SCREEN PLAY ENTITLED, "TAPE."

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
IT'S MORE LIKE A "WHO" THAT INSPIRED ME. HER NAME WAS MISS FLETCHER, MY SIXTH GRADE TEACHER. WHENEVER SHE GAVE A WRITING ASSIGNMENT, SHE WOULD SINGLE ME OUT TO READ MINE IN FRONT OF THE CLASS. BACK THEN, I THOUGHT SHE WAS BEING A BITCH AND PICKING ON ME, BUT I WOULD LATER LEARN THAT SHE GENUINELY THOUGHT I WROTE WELL.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
WALKING TO WORK A FEW MONTHS AGO, A STRANGER ON THE STREET STOPPED ME AND SAID, "HEY, YOU WROTE THAT BOOK DIDN'T YOU?" I GUESS IT REALLY ONLY SPEAKS TO HOW MUCH I LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO ON THE BACK COVER, BUT I BEAMED THE REST OF THE DAY JUST THE SAME.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
STEPHEN KING'S "THE STAND." I COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT ALL OF THE GOOD VS. EVIL STUFF, BUT THE IDEA OF STARTING OVER WITH A BIG EMPTY PLANET REALLY EXCITES ME.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
"MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS" - IT WAS THE FIRST BOOK I EVER READ WITHOUT BEING TOLD I HAD TO READ IT. I HAVE A FONDNESS TOWARD IT, EVEN TODAY. IMAGINE MY DELIGHT/HORROR WHEN IT WAS RECENTLY MADE INTO A MOVIE.

What is your favorite Quote?
GETTING OLD IS NOT FOR PUSSIES (Bette Davis)

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
I WAKE UP WITH SO VERY MANY CRAZY IDEAS. I LITERALLY HAVE A LIST OF THOSE IDEAS THAT ARE WAITING TO HAVE A STORY WRITTEN ABOUT THEM. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS, SOME ARE SO STRANGE, THAT I'M ALMOST EMBARRASSED TO EXPOUND ON THEM, MUCH LESS PUT MY NAME THEM.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
LIFE ISN'T FAIR.

How do you react to a bad review?
I TAKE MY TIME AND ORCHESTRATE THE PERFECT REVENGE...(kidding)...ACTUALLY I GAVE UP TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYONE ALL THE TIME. OPINIONS, REACTIONS AND OVERALL TASTE IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE AND THEREFORE I FULLY EXPECT THAT SOME FOLKS JUST WON'T LIKE WHAT I DO.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
LOVE. I'M PUTTY IN THE HANDS OF THE ONE I LOVE.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
THE BIBLE. I WOULD LOVE THE PERSON WHO WROTE IT TO COME FORWARD AND EXPLAIN IT TO ME.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
ANATOMY OF A NOBODY (It"s actually being written.)

Best Seller by Timothy B. Sagges

Book Review: Awakened by Ednah Walters

Title: Awakened
Author: Ednah Walter
Series: Guardian Legacy
Publisher: August 22, 2010
Released: Pill Hill Press
Website: http://www.ednahwalters.com/

Book Summary:
Most teens turn sixteen and get the license to drive, but Lil Falcon gets the license to kill demons. Orphaned as a child and raised by an eccentric grandfather, Lil is concerned with surviving high school and is unaware that she's a Guardian-a being with super powers charged with killing demons and protecting humanity. When she meets Bran, a mysterious boy with amazing abilities, his psi energy unlocks her latent powers. But Bran has a secret that can ruin their growing relationship, and the truth she discovers may destroy everything she believes in unless she finds the right balance between love and sacrifice.

When originally given the chance to review this book I turned it down. I took one look at this cover and dismissed the book. I really had no desire to read it thinking it was likely going to have content I'd find objectionable.

However over the past year or so I've had many interactions with author Ednah Walters. A recent plea for me to review the sequel to this book opened a line of discussion in which I was assured there wasn't anything really objectionable in this book so I agreed to read it.

They say don't judge a book by it's cover and for me that applies to Awakened. My initial judgement of this book based on the cover was far from accurate. Other than a couple mild swear words there wasn't anything objectionable in this book. In fact it was far cleaner than most of the young adult books I've read lately.

I found the mythology of the Xenithians and Hermonites to be both unique and intriguing. The glossary of terms, characters and lineage at the beginning of the book came in handy more than once as the story unfolded. I'd expected this book to be more romance than anything else but the romance was just a part of the story line.  This book was a fast paced good verses evil tale that was full of great characters and relationships. I will definitely be picking up the next book Betrayed.

Rating; 4 Stars - Great Book

Content: Cleaner than most YA I've read lately- just a little mild language

Book Review: Frankie, The Walk 'n Roll Dog by Barbara Gail Techel

Title: Frankie, The Walk 'n Roll Dog
Author: Barbara Gail Techel
Illustrator: Victoria Kay Lieffring
Publisher: Joyful Paw Prints
Released: January 11, 2008
Website: http://joyfulpaws.com/

Book Summary:

A true, inspirational story about a dachshund whose life started out just like any other dog walking on all four paws until a spinal injury leaves her paralyzed. Frankie is custom-fitted for a wheelchair and learns to keep on rolling. Her zest for life will have you cheering and she will give you hope that all things are possible. Frankie will leave an everlasting and loving paw print on your heart. A book for all ages to teach overcoming challenges and also compassion for the physically challenged.

This book is sure to be a hit with dog lovers.  A story of hope and inspiration that shows the love, care and dedication of Frankie's family.  My 6 year old daughter was fascinated by this book and we both learned something new.  We ended up going online to look at pictures of dogs who use the doggie equivalent of wheelchairs to get around.

The illustrations of the dog were well done but some of the other illustrations, especially those of people, were not my favorite.  There was a lot of text on the pages making it a longer read aloud and a couple times my daughter was ready for the page to be turned before I was done reading.

An interesting story about overcoming challenges and not giving up.

Book Review: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Title: Anna and the French Kiss
Author: Stephanie Perkins
Series: None but there are companion novels
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Released: December 2, 2010
Website: http://www.stephanieperkins.com/

Book Summary:

Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris - until she meets Etienne St. Clair: perfect, Parisian (and English and American, which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The only problem is that he's taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of her almost-relationship back home.

As winter melts into spring, will a year of romantic near misses end with the French kiss Anna and readers have long awaited.

I so enjoyed reading this one....or I guess I should say listening to this one since I listened to the audiobook.  Usually I get a lot done while I'm listening to an audios... laundry, dishes, errands, etc.  But that did not happen with this book.  I kept finding myself sitting down, getting nothing accomplished, with a silly grin on my face, totally lost in the story.

Full of laughs, romance, and drama this book was a fun read. Anna and the French Kiss was one of those books that I didn't want to put down. I could have done without the F word but otherwise found this to be a fantastic book.

Rating: 5 Stars - I loved it.

Content: Some language including a half dozen uses of the F word. References to sex, some crude comments, teen drinking but nothing is overly graphic or described in detail.

Interview:
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The power to absorb reading material by touch. It takes too long to read a book, and there are so many I want to read!

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Baskin and Robbins’s Pralines and Cream

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

You should read A Breath of Eyre if you like Gothic novels and classic literature and prep school drama and dramatic weather and brooding guys and strong girls and swoony kisses, all with a dash of magic.

Any other books in the works?
A Breath of Eyre is the first in a trilogy about the adventures of Emma Townsend, who has a tendency to get lost, literally, in the stories she reads. The sequel, A Touch of Scarlet, is loosely based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and follows Emma as she navigates her way through sex, secrets, and scandal during her junior year. The final book, A Phantom Enchantment, will send Emma to Paris, where she gets lost in Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera; it’s definitely the darkest and most thrilling of the series.

If you could jump into a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
Well, since that’s exactly what Emma does in A Breath of Eyre, I’d love to follow in her footsteps and travel into the atmospheric, romantic, and slightly sinister world of Jane Eyre.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
When I was a child, I loved The Secret Garden. As a preteen, I devoured all of Lois Duncan’s thrillers. As a teen, I fell in love with Holden from The Catcher in the Rye, and I adored anything by Austen or the Brontës. Not a whole lot has changed—I still love these books!

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Definitely Athena, goddess of wisdom. And although I’m basically a pacifist, I can think of a few moments in which the goddess of war thing might come in handy.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
A cottage overlooking the sea in Kinsale, Ireland.

Favorite Candy?
Swedish fish.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
Tough question. Probably Kelly Creagh’s Enshadowed (sequel to Nevermore) and Bethany Griffin’s Masque of the Red Death. For movies, the trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman looks amazing! And I’m dying to see The Raven. (I’m sensing 2012 is going to be a big year for Poe.)

If you were a super hero, what would your kryptonite be?

Baby animals. The bad guys could stop me instantly by threatening harm to puppies, bunnies, or other fluffy helpless things.

What is your guilty pleasure?
The Vampire Diaries.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....

The Sky is Everywhere. Jandy Nelson writes gorgeous prose and even lovelier poetry. I’m quite in awe of her talent. And I’m a little in love with Joe Fontaine.

Favorite smells?
Coffee, Christmas trees, and oranges

Write a Haiku about your book
When lightning strikes, she
Travels into books to learn
Who she’s meant to be.

Cats or Dog?
While I like cats, I’m a dog person at heart, particularly if we’re talking about shelter dogs. My shelter pup Maggie, going on fifteen years, shares the title with my husband of “love of my life.”

Favorite quote from a movie?
“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Do you prefer a bunch of small gifts or one big expensive one?
I generally think small, thoughtful gifts are best. But about fifteen years ago, my husband bought me a rather expensive Mont Blanc pen when I told him I wanted to be a writer. I never believed I’d use it for an actual signing, but he always believed in me. So it wasn’t the price tag that floored me but the thoughtfulness behind the gift.

What is you favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Reading

A Breath of Eyre by Eve Marie Mont

Emma Townsend has always believed in stories—the ones she reads voraciously, and the ones she creates in her head. Perhaps it’s because she feels like an outsider at her exclusive prep school, or because her stepmother doesn’t come close to filling the void left by her mother’s death. And her only romantic prospect—apart from a crush on her English teacher—is Gray Newman, a long-time friend who just adds to Emma’s confusion. But escape soon arrives in an old leather-bound copy of Jane Eyre.

Reading of Jane’s isolation sparks a deep sense of kinship. Then fate takes things a leap further when a lightning storm catapults Emma right into Jane’s body and her nineteenth-century world.
As governess at Thornfield, Emma has a sense of belonging she’s never known—and an attraction to the brooding Mr. Rochester. Now, moving between her two realities and uncovering secrets in both, Emma must decide whether her destiny lies in the pages of Jane’s story, or in the unwritten chapters of her own…
Rich in drama, romance and self-discovery, A BREATH OF EYRE is a novel that delivers in its connection to literary history and the honest portrayal of modern adolescence.

INTERVIEW:
Q: How did you know you should become an author?
A: I wanted to be a writer as long as I can remember. Even as a child I knew I wanted to write books, and not just as a hobby. I knew I wanted to do it for a living. How a young child would get such an idea, I don’t know, but there I was, writing my first “book” with a pencil, in huge all caps, shortly after I had learned my letters.

Q: Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
A: Wouldn’t you want to meet a fun, snarky villain who wants to stay evil but runs into all kinds of problems?

Q: What was the inspiration behind your book?
A: I am usually inspired by good stories, be that movies or books. While I can’t name a particular one, My Sparkling Misfortune is the result of my life-long fascination with fairytales, knights, kings, princes, princesses, castles, -- and villains.

Q: How did the title for your book come about?
A: Not easily. I kept thinking about it as I worked on the book, and nothing good would come to mind. I had finished it, and the story still had no title. I knew I had written something fun and unusual, and I wanted the title to reflect that. Then one day it just came to me. My Sparkling Misfortune. It fits the story just right.

Q: What is your favorite scene in the book and why do you love it?
A: Lord Arkus capturing what he thinks is a powerful evil spirit and then learning it is actually a spirit who can only do good -- and that he’s stuck with him for 5 years. I love it because it’s hilarious, and two of my favorite characters, Arkus and Tulip, the good spirit, get together for the first time.

Q: Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
A: Getting the readers’ feedback, seeing how my characters become their friends. The response I receive for this book is extra special. Lord Arkus seems to strike a chord with the readers, his sense of humor has won many fans. He is even being interviewed, which he appears to enjoy, especially when he gets to point out that he is the real author of the book, not me. If things keep going this way, he’ll be giving a press conference before I know it.

Q: Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
A: The sequel to My Sparkling Misfortune is in the final stages of being released as an audiobook. The voice artist A.T.Chandler has done an excellent job on the first book, bringing Lord Arkus and the other characters to life. I can’t wait to hear what he did with the sequel, and I can’t wait for my readers to be able to hear it as well. While that is being worked on, I am completing a short story and thinking of how I can persuade Lord Arkus to write Book 3. Many readers have already commented that they want it.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
A: Write the kinds of books you want to read.

Q: Who are your favorite authors of all time?
A: C.S. Lewis and Charles Dickens.

Q: What are you currently reading?
A: I’ve finished The Hawk and His Boy by Christopher Bunn, it was a good read, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the trilogy, The Shadow at the Gate. For non-fiction, How to Teach Your Baby to Read by Glenn Doman. I’m using the system on my two-year-old.

Q: If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
A: Actor George C. Scott. Of all the versions of A Christmas Carol I’ve seen, and I’ve seen many, his Scrooge is absolutely the best.

Q: If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
A: The ability to heal.

My Sparkling Misfortune

Lord Arkus of Blackriver Castle readily admits that he is a villain and sees no reason why it should stop him from being the protagonist of this book. After all, Prince Kellemar, an aspiring hero, has defeated him in a rather questionable way. Bent on revenge, Arkus attempts to capture a powerful evil spirit who would make him nearly invincible, but a last-minute mistake leaves him with a Sparkling instead - "a goody-goody spirit that helps heroes, watches over little children, and messes up villains' plans."
Bound to Lord Arkus for five years of service and sworn to act in his best interests, the Sparkling is not easy to get rid of, and of course his understanding of "best interests" is quite different from what Lord Arkus has in mind.

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves – it works wonderfully…
My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain crosseyed.

EXCERPT:
From Bryn's POV - from the beginning of the book:

I've seen the glow all my life. You could say it is the bane of my existence. I mean, how many kids have psychiatrists at age five? My dad was great though. At least he seemed to understand me. He didn't behave like he didn't believe me. My mother, on the other hand - well I'd rather not talk about her right now.
Besides, I don't have much luck with people. They either die on me or they leave. People just don't waste time hanging with the Freak. The stupid name is more appropriate than the kids at North Wood high could ever have known. What would they think if they knew I saw weird golden glows around people? Bet they'd have a field day with that!
The thing that upsets me the most is that it had to be Joshua that has the glow too. It was okay until I figured it out. Joshua, the best friend I've ever had, is going to die. Sometime soon, and I can't do anything about it. Risk telling someone what I suspect? You've got to be kidding. I've spent way too much time under a psychiatrist's scrutiny. Not going to happen.
I've resigned myself to waiting. Waiting for Joshua to die. I have no idea how it will happen. Just that he doesn't have much time left. And in the meantime all I can do is keep smiling, keep acting like nothing is wrong. Keep acting like I can't see the blindingly bright glow around my dearest friend. An achingly beautiful golden aura that hurts so deeply.
I am already grieving for him.
I wish I could change it, prevent it. But I know I don't have the power.
Joshua is going to die and there is nothing I can do about it.

Dead Radiance

For as long as she can recall Bryn Halbrook has seen a golden aura around certain people, and it is only when her new best friend Joshua dies that she understands the glow means death. Bryn struggles to adapt to a new town and a new foster home while trying to deal with the guilt of being unable to save her friend. Until mysterious biker-boy, Aidan Lee arrives.
When Aidan unexpectedly takes off he leaves behind a shattered heart, a tonne of unanswered questions and a mysterious book that suggests Bryn is a Valkyrie. Bryn is faced with questions about Aidan’s real identity, the real reason he came to Craven, and that Odin, Freya and Valhalla just might be real.

As if accepting her new wings, new life and new home in Asgard isn’t difficult enough, Bryn is forced to find and return the precious necklace of the Goddess Freya. The only problem is – if she fails, Aidan will die.

The mystery of a Mythology is easy to enjoy. The reality is much harder to accept.
