Welcome to Author Nell Carson

I was born in Philadelphia but grew up primarily in Seattle. I obtained my degree in Literature from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I now live in Denver with my husband and our beautiful baby boy, Cole. In my spare time I work on the endless renovations of our 1922 bungalow.

I was born in Philadelphia but grew up primarily in Seattle. I obtained my degree in Literature from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. After bouncing around the country for a while, struggling to pay the rent and write, I settled in Denver with my husband Ben, our Italian Greyhound, Kelby, and the meanest cat on the planet, Oliver. In my spare time I work on the endless renovations of our 1922 bungalow.

Interview
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would travel to the past, specifically to Jane Austen’s England. I’d love to have tea with her and pick her mind about creating romantic angst.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Jane Austen! Benjamin Franklin, Amelia Earheart, Nora Roberts and Alfred Hitchcock.

One food you would never eat?
Ew! I heard about this on Top Chef: in the Philippines, they fertilize duck eggs so a chick begins to grow then once there’s a beak and the emergence of feathers they boil it alive and serve it as a delicacy! No thanks!

Pet Peeves?
Here’s one I think most writers could relate to—people writing ‘should of’ instead of ‘should’ve’ or ‘should have’. Drives me crazy!

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
I think The Gingerbread House touches on several topics readers might relate to including coping with Alzheimer’s and domestic abuse as well as tackling the subject of Eminent Domain where the courts have ruled that towns can take away a person’s home for the sake of a new development resulting in entire neighborhoods filled with beautiful old Queen Anne and Victorian homes being destroyed and that’s something that can never be replaced. (Wow, what a sentence!)

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Easy! The birth last year of my son, Cole. At 45, I never thought I’d have children but then there he was! And now I fall deeper in love with that precious little face every single day!

If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?
You guessed it, Jane Austen! Pride and Prejudice, Emma, any of those. I suspect though, I’d find it would be a case of ‘nice to place visit, but not so much to live in’. Women had it rough in those days!

What is your dream cast for your book?
Patrick Dempsey and Jennifer Love Hewitt

What is your favorite Quote?
One of my creative writing teachers told us this one by Mark Twain:  “Don’t say the old lady screamed. Bring her on and let her scream.”  Love it!

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
I wanted to be a newspaper reporter. But when I started writing the articles I felt confined by the facts! I wanted to embellish the stories and create my own endings.

How did you know you should become an author?
I found there was nothing I’d rather do, even if I never ‘made it’. I just had to.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
It was from my grandmother who was also a writer. In response to my dismay at not being able to write as much as I wanted to because of my day job she said to not worry, that I’m writing all the time in the back of my head. It’s true! It’s really a way of looking at the world and at life, constantly trying to capture experiences and emotions in just the right words.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A mini Cooper for my husband complete with racing stripe. It’s his favorite!

What do you do in your free time?
My husband and I bought a rundown bungalow that was built in 1922 five years ago. Ever since then we’ve been pecking away at many renovation projects—definitely a work in progress! But very satisfying.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I don’t know if you’d call it a celebration but the first thing I did was sit at my desk at work and just cry for five solid minutes. (I did that for the second book too—as I probably will for my third!)

What is your guilty pleasure?
I love reality competition TV shows like Top Chef or Project Runway. I think it has something to do with witnessing true, non-scripted emotion.
Foods you wish you could and never gain a pound:
French fries, ice cream, tiramisu, fettuccini Alfredo, filet mignon

Words you love
kumquat, babaganush, Cole, crimson, salamander

Night owl, or early bird?
Early bird

Chocolate or Vanilla?
Choc!

Regular or Diet?
Regular

Pizza or Pasta?
Pasta

Summer or Winter?
Summer

Beach or Pool?
Beach

Shoes or Sandals?
Sandals

Fields of Elysium by A.B. Whelan

How can love mend a heart full of hate?

Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly's life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings.

Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful, romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, unimaginable danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

Author Interview & Kindle or Nook Giveway - Farsighted by Emlyn Chand

Welcome Back to Author Emlyn Chand
From an early age, Emlyn Chand has counted books among her best friends. She loves to hear and tell stories and emerged from the womb with a fountain pen grasped firmly in her left hand (true story). Her affinity for the written word extends to absolutely every area of her life: she has published three novels and three children’s books with plans for many more of each, leads a classics book group with almost five-hundred members, and, of course, runs the whole shebang at Novel Publicity.

The book that changed Emlyn’s life is Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson. It opened her eyes to the world that could exist if only she was willing to create it—a lesson she has never forgotten. While she enjoys all types of novels, her greatest loves are literary fiction and YA. She’s best known for her Farsighted series and is developing a slow but steady following for the Bird Brain Books. She’s eager to see how her women’s fiction novel, Torn Together, will be received by the reading masses.

Interview

1. What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

Peanut M&Ms. At least, that’s what I had for breakfast today as my way of celebrating my book launch. Yeah, I’m living the dream ;-)

2. What inspired you to want to become a writer?

Um, hello! I was born a writer, of course. Just look at my twitter bio:  Emlyn Chand emerged from the womb with a fountain pen grasped firmly in her left hand (trust story). In all seriousness, I’ve been writing since before I could write, if you know what I mean. I’ve always loved inventing stories or “tall tales” as my parents call them. Writing became my career about three years ago when the local paper offered me a book review column and the dream fulfillment that came along with it. That gave me the courage and consistency to write novels. Open Heart is my third written, but second published.

3. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

If you’re looking for a YA read that tackles the real-life problems associated with being a teen (bulimia, bullying, parents – to name a few) and also has a compelling paranormal aspect, then look no further!

4. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?

Absolutely. In Farsighted (the first book of the series), Simmi was intended to serve as the object of Alex’s affection, more of a prop than a character. Shapri started off as a minor character, but quickly made it clear that this was her show. Starting out, Shapri was based on the strong, confident side of myself. As I delved deeper into Simmi’s psyche, I realized she was based on me, too—the insecure, unworthy side. In creating characters, we authors learn so much about ourselves!

5. Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

Oh, you betcha. I’m really into creating playlists for each of my books. You can check out playlists for Farsighted, Open Heart, and Pitch (which will be release in 2013) at www.emlynchand.com/music. Farsighted’s list is more alta-rock and represents the character Alex; his theme song is “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. Open Heart’s list is primarily Bollywood and represents Simmi; her theme song is “Main Yahaa Hoon” from the movie Veer Zaara.

6. What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

The book that changed my life is Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson. It opened my eyes to the world that could exist if only I was willing to create it—I think it’s what encouraged me to be a writer in the first place. I became an avid reader when I discovered Babysitter’s Little Sister by Anne M Martin at the age of 7. I used to read 2 of them per day!

7. What is one book everyone should read?

My favorite book is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, definitely. The novel has so many layers and entertains on so many levels. Also the characters in that novel seem more real than those from any other I’ve ever read. It’s just beautiful—that’s the only word for it. This one book everyone should attempt regardless of genre preference.

8. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

You can count on me to always have at least half a dozen balls in the air. My current project is Fall Back, the first book in a new YA science fiction series called The Timewalker Chronicles. I’m having a blast getting to know this new set of characters, but I also look forward to transitioning back to the Farsighted series and writing the third installment, Pitch.

9. If you were a bird, which one would you be?

Oh, boy did you ever ask the right person this question. Widely known fact, I’m a crazy bird lady. Evidence:  my sun conure, Ducky, is the mascot for my business, Novel Publicity. He also has his own blog and is on Twitter, Facebook, and GoodReads. Furthermore, I write a children’s book series called the Bird Brain Books—each volume features a different feathery protagonist. To answer your question, if I could be any bird, I’d be my pet Ducky. He is EXTREMELY spoiled and pretty famous in his own right.

10. What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?

Well, I can’t be too embarrassed if I’m admitting it publicly, right? While I’m a huge fan of shows like Glee and The Big Bang Theory, I also have a soft spot for America’s Next Top Model. It appeals to the artist in me, I guess. Sometimes I cry when the contestants get eliminated (same with Project Runway). It’s always sad when a dreamer gets squashed. Please don’t step on me—yeeps!

Farsighted
Alex Kosmitoras's life has never been easy. The only other student who will talk to him is the school bully, his parents are dead broke and insanely overprotective, and... oh yeah, he's blind.

Just when he thinks he'll never have a shot at a normal life, an enticing new girl comes to their small Midwest town all the way from India. Simmi is smart, nice, and actually wants to be friends with Alex. Plus she smells like an Almond Joy bar. Sophomore year might not be so bad after all.

Alex is in store for another new arrival—an unexpected and often embarrassing ability to "see" the future. Try as he may, Alex is unable to ignore his visions, especially when they suggest Simmi is in mortal danger.

With the help of the mysterious psychic next door and friends who come bearing gifts of their own, Alex embarks on his journey to change the future.

AmazonBN

Open Heart
Simmi Shergill's life is a mess. Her powers of psychic feeling are on the fritz, and Grandon Township's sudden population boom has brought quite a few unsavory characters to town. She also looks like an over-blown balloon in her size 14 pants, but not even starving herself seems to be helping.

At least she has Alex, the boyfriend who loves her so much he'd do anything for her. Last summer, he even risked his life to protect her from the mysterious boy everyone was convinced wanted to kill her.

Just one problem: she's not so sure she feels the same way. Is Alex really the man of her dreams? Why can't she stop fixating on her would-be killer, Dax? Part of her wants to run screaming in the other direction whenever Dax is around, while the other part longs to run into his embrace, no matter whom she'd hurt or what she'd risk.

Simmi's loyalty is on the line. Whom will she choose—the blind seer who loves her, or the charming telekinetic with "bad idea" written all over him? Emotions run high in the tension-packed book two of the Farsighted series.

Author Patrick W. Carr

Patrick Carr was born on an Air Force base in West Germany at the height of the cold war. He has been told this was not his fault. As an Air Force brat, he experienced a change in locale every three years until his father retired to Tennessee. Patrick saw more of the world on his own through a varied and somewhat eclectic education and work history. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1984 and has worked as a draftsman at a nuclear plant, did design work for the Air Force, worked for a printing company, and consulted as an engineer. Patrick’s day gig for the last five years has been teaching high school math in Nashville, TN. He currently makes his home in Nashville with his wonderfully patient wife, Mary, and four sons he thinks are amazing: Patrick, Connor, Daniel, and Ethan. Sometime in the future he would like to be a jazz pianist. Patrick thinks writing about himself in the third person is kind of weird.

Blood and Bone

More Archaeological Adventures from Popular Suspense Writer Don Hoesel.

A decade after Serpent of Moses, Jack is married to Espy and back teaching at Evanston University. They have two sons, one of whom has cystic fibrosis. Despite this challenge, life is comfortable. But that all changes when the CIA, while combing through the papers of the late Gordon Reese, uncovers the secret of Elisha's bones. Jack's world is then turned upside down by an urgent call from his old friend Duckey, who's been alerted to the CIA's probing by one of his former contacts. Jack and his family escape from their home just ahead of the CIA, and he decides to do what he should have done long ago: recover the bones and destroy them. Except the bones aren't where he left them.

So now Jack is in a race, for the last time, to find the bones. And he's not the only one. King by R.J. Larson

Fantasy Meets the Old Testament in a Novel That Will Reach Readers of All Ages.

Against his wishes and desires, Akabe of Siphra has been chosen by his people to be King. But what does a warrior know of ruling during peacetime? Guided by the Infinite, Akabe seeks to rebuild the Temple in the city of Munra to give the sacred books of Parne a home. But dangerous factions are forming in the background. To gain the land he needs, Akabe must forsake the yearnings of his heart and instead align himself through marriage to the Thaenfall family.

Meanwhile, Kien Lantec and Ela Roeh are drawn still closer together...while becoming pawns in a quest to gain power over the region. As questions of love and faith become tangled with lies and murderous plots, each must seek the Infinite to guide them through an ever more tangled web of intrigue and danger.

INTERVIEW

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

Future of course! I would love to know how things turn out. Though some lucky people do that just by sticking around for a while. I know a woman whose mother lived from 1878 to 1970. When she was a girl, she went around in a horse and buggy. The year before she died, astronauts went to the moon. To say nothing of the social changes she experienced and witnessed.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?

Easy. Dostoyevsky, Joe Pesci, Jane Austen, Michelle Obama, and my mom. I think she’d like to meet them too.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

Assuming I had a flint, fishing rod, and iodine tablets: a beach chair, a laptop and a Wi-Fi tower. Also, an airplane and a pilot. And something to defeat the smoke monster.

What is one book everyone should read?

Waiting for the Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee. The scenes of violence are difficult to read, but the prose is stunning and so is the story.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

I’d settle for the ability to have a cheerful, productive day on 3 to 4 hours of sleep.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Once at a Ben and Jerry’s, I had oatmeal cookie ice cream. Three delicious scoops. The ice cream man promised me it would be in stores soon, but for years I’ve been checking the freezer aisle in vain.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

After years of peaceful living in an idyllic, underground utopia, Natasha discovers sinister truths about her home, uncovers secrets, falls in love, travels through strange, threatening forests…and so will you.

If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?

Pride and Prejudice. But only if I could bring my dentist and voting rights.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle. I still have the $2.50 copy I read as a kid, though now it lives on my daughter’s bookshelf. The spine is peeling and the cover is ripped and the pages smell like an attic. But I’ll keep it around until it crumbles to dust.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
When my brother was a kid, he wrote a fan letter to the musician, Sonny Rollins. In Sonny’s response, he wrote, “Be kind to other people and practice your music.” We hung up the letter in the living room. I’d give the same advice to aspiring writers, with a slight revision, “Be kind to other people and practice your writing.”

THE OFFICE OF MERCY

The Office of Mercy takes place three hundred years after an intentional global catastrophe, known as the Storm. Orchestrated by a small group of idealistic young people, the Storm was a last-ditch effort to remake civilization—to start over—after conditions on earth had deteriorated considerably. In that sense, the Storm was a success. Today, people live in high-tech, mostly underground settlements, like America-Five, where everyone’s needs are provided for. There’s no hunger, no money; and cell-replacement programs guarantee all citizens healthy, long lives.

On the top floor of America-Five is the Office of Mercy, where twenty-four year old Natasha Wiley works. Natasha’s job is to track and kill the nomadic descendants of the scattering of people who survived the Storm, and who now roam the wilderness in tribes. Most citizens consider the Office’s work of eliminating the rampant suffering outside their walls to be the paradigm of modern, ethical behavior. Yet Natasha harbors growing doubts. When her beloved mentor, Jeffrey, selects her to join a special team to venture outside the settlement, her allegiances to home, society and above all to Jeffrey suddenly collide.

Along with a band of misfits, Natasha enacts a plan to escape the confines of the settlement and uncover for herself the true effects of her office’s policies. She is willing to wager her safety, her promising career and, eventually, her faith in the values that she has worked for and believed in all her life. THE OFFICE OF MERCY is the thrilling debut novel of a post-apocalyptic world for fans of The Hunger Games.
