GUEST POST:

Creating Chemistry in My Writing
Belle Whittington

I’ve mulled this question over and over in my mind, fishing around in my brain for an answer complex and interesting enough to keep my lovely readers interested without boring them to tears!  I think I know where to start…
The summer during which Cicada was born into my mind is still as fresh in my memory as if it were yesterday.  I’d been feeling the itch to write something…it was an insatiable urge that could not be squelched by any other means than by opening my mind to the story that was literally clawing its way out of my imagination.  And so I did.  I opened the doors of my mind, and everything came flooding out at once.
It was a hot, sunny, summer day in early June that I turned down the long, winding road that runs along side the ranch that inspired the setting for the ranch in Cicada.  To be honest, I had the radio cranked up, the windows down, and I was listening to the soundtrack for Twilight.  At the precise moment I drove by the spooky forest that inspired the haunted forest in Cicada, the song Full Moon by The Black Ghosts came on the radio.  It was like that song was the key I needed to open the door to my imagination and let the story unfold.  It was brilliant!  Like the most powerful kind of magic!
By the time I got home, I had the whole Preface ready to put down in words.  And I fell in love with the Preface as soon as I read it for the first time.  After that, the characters slipped through that open door one-by-one and introduced themselves to me as if they were real people.  It really was amazing!
After I allowed the characters to wander around in my imagination for a while so that I could get to know them, I began to realize that they’d known each other before I’d met them!  It was like watching a movie unfold in my mind!  I know what you are thinking … it sounds like I’m a lunatic.  And maybe I am, but that’s a different story all together.  Today, we are discussing how I create chemistry in my writing.  Ahem.  Back to the story…
So after I got to know them, I set them loose on the town of Willis and followed them around.  The first place they headed for was … can you guess?  Anyone?  Awww… come on, this is an easy one!  Yes!  They headed for the Sonic!  And it was all downhill from there!
You are probably wondering why I went through all of that to get to this part.  But I felt like I needed to give a little back story about how I imagine and write before I could address the question of how I create chemistry in my writing.  What is the answer?
I pop a terrific CD into my car stereo or hop over to YouTube and listen to my inspiration lists.  All the characters need is some good mood music and a little time enacting what they plan to do next.  They do the interactions.  Sometimes they set things or fire, or battle extraterrestrials.  Sometimes they hop on a horse and ride off across the verdant green pasture at the ranch.  All I do is observe and record.
You see, they arrived in my dimension already knowing each other … already friends, love interests, family members.  They came complete with their own back stories, likes, dislikes, names.  I didn’t really have to do any thinking or planning to create the chemistry between them, because it was already there!
And, just between you and me, there are nights … especially those dark nights when the moon doesn’t rise … when I’m up late writing on the sequels to Cicada … that I begin to wonder if my characters were thought up by me or if I am really a figment of their imaginations and they are the ones who are writing a story with me as a character.  If that’s the case, they sure are writing a boring book!

Cicada
Summertime for Blair Reynolds and her friends had always been carefree and fun... until the summer they happened upon something that was not human. As they band together in a fight for their lives, Blair's true love becomes something more than human. Something unnatural. And their survival depends entirely upon their ability to keep a secret.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Your Daughter Needs a Hero by Maria Furlough

Welcome to Author Maria C. Furlough

Eighteen years ago, an eleven year old girl looked in mirror and for the first time in her innocent life…she realized she hated what she saw.  That girl was me.  It continued to be me until in my early twenties I realized two things: God had a bigger plan for me than that and part of that plan was for me to help other girls not be like me.As God slowly picked me up out of the pit I was in, I began to look around me and see many of factors that contributed to my poor body image.  As a youth leader I watched, studied, and prayed for the young girls God put into my life.  I struggled with them as they constantly asked about the caloric content of the cookies I put out or begged me not to take pictures of them.  It made me so sad to see so much of myself in them.  Then one day, after an interaction with parents, it hit me like a ton of bricks “they don’t know!” Their parents, my parents…they didn’t and don’t realize the depths that insecurity reaches.  It was time for action.
After the birth of my first child, Faith I sat down at my computer to write.  I wrote and I wrote and I wrote.  I actually wrote all the way through the birth of my second child David (it took me quite awhile with two under two at home!!!).  What I wrote is simple: parents you need to know…Today my family and I live in North Carolina and we excitedly begin this journey as an author and speaker.  My husband Dave is the catalyst behind all that I do.  He has encouraged me and enabled me to be on this journey and I am so thankful for his love and his companionship.  My daughter Faith, now turning four, inspires me every day to stand firm to the message I believe in.  It is for her that I take serious every word I utter about beauty.  It is for her I strive to be a woman who models a God given security in prayer that she will not struggle the way that I did.  It is for her my life’s mission is now clear.  My son David is now two and he is the ball of laughter and energy that keep this home going.  His smile, his laugh it is all contagious and I look forward to the man God is molding him to be.  Furlough baby # three, Aaron has officially arrived into our lives.  Since the day he was born he has been a perfect reminder of God’s grace and love for us.  Aaron is our perfect gift.
Authoring is by no means my life, but it sure is something God has excitedly called me to do and I look forward to all that the future has in store!  May this book, this blog, this life of mine bless you as we partner to help our girls into a life of true worth.
Feel free to contact me at any time at maria@trueworthministries.org for more information on booking events, signings, prayer needs, or simply to share your story.

Maria’s latest book is Your Daughter Needs a Hero.

Your Daughter Needs a Hero
What drives teenage girls? What tempts them? What causes their insecurities? More importantly, what can parents do to make a difference in their lives? Author Maria Furlough battled self-image and self-esteem issues as a teenager, and in Your Daughter Needs a Hero she uses a mix of personal stories and years of experience counseling teenage girls in youth ministry to show parents what their teenage daughters are going through and how best to help them.
Furlough explains how things such as fad diets, the media, and pornography influence a teen girl’s body image, and she guides parents on how to counteract the constant pressures and influences that affect teen girls every day. This book will show parents how to effectively build their daughter’s self-esteem, self-image, and, most importantly, their faith in God and in their parents. If you have a daughter, Your Daughter Needs a Hero is a must read!

Mirror Mirror
A Collection of Memoirs and Stories, Stephanie Hart’s third book, is composed of a series of fast-paced vignettes that explore her childhood, youth, family, and ancestral background through a mix of real and imagined memories and events. She recounts and interprets the unique details of her own life, bringing to life the personalities and experiences of various relatives and friends in an intimate, heartbreaking, and often humorous manner. Her rich prose is evocative and poetic, yet highly accessible and engaging. Her story becomes a window into many lives, lives most readers will find reflected in their own personal narratives, encouraging them to revisit and re-imagine their own family backgrounds.
Seamlessly blending past and present, Stephanie takes us from Manhattan of the 1950s to Moscow and Odessa circa 1800s, where she imaginatively renders the lives of her grandparents and great grandparents, and then takes us into the twenty-first century. She bares her soul by inviting readers into her world: her magical and unsettling early childhood by the sea, her years spent as the only Jewish girl in a Presbyterian boarding school, her urban high school years during which conflict with her mercurial and charismatic mother reaches a crescendo, and the weight of her father’s anger and unrealized dreams press down upon her. While acknowledging the mirror of the past, she shows us the love and friendship reflected in her current life, celebrating the generative power of each moment to transform experience.
Mirror Mirror is beautifully enhanced with well-preserved photographs of Stephanie Hart’s family. These expressive images allow us to experience the climate of other times and places as if we had been there ourselves.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Midnight Fire Series by Kaitlyn Davis

Interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
The past! I love history and there are so many things I’ve dreamed of seeing with my own eyes: a NY speakeasy in the 1920s, a ball during the Victorian Era, Rome in all of its marbled glory, Cleopatra’s Egypt, Boston right before the Revolutionary War, and so much more! I would never want to see the future because I love the mystery of it. Life would be ruined if you knew exactly where it was going.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
I’m not sure about me, but if you’ve read Simmer you know that Kira, my main character, was graced with a questionable superhero name – the Flaming Tomato. Intrigued? Need to read my book to find out why!

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying! I absolutely love to travel and I would LOVE to fly! Mind reading is a close second. I think all writers are naturally curious people, and I would love to get into some people’s minds and explore. But in the end, I think it is way too intrusive and sometimes wondering what’s on someone’s mind is exciting!

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl! I’m scary in the morning…

Pet Peeves?
Abrupt cliffhangers! I seriously despise these in a story!! The mark of a good series is to keep readers wanting more, and part of that is having long-term story lines and mysteries that extend from book to book, but I hate when a book just ends mid-scene or practically mid-sentence. Harry Potter is my go-to for a good example of a series! Each book was a complete story that added to an overarching plot.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
There is heart-pumping action, heart-stopping romance, characters you will fall in love with and scenes that will keep you reading until dawn – what else could you want in a book?

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Interacting with the few fans that I have! Seriously, it has been surreal! Whenever someone tells me they read my book and loved a character or the story, my heart stops because I am so excited! I hope this is a feeling that will never go away and I am so so grateful to every single person who has taken the chance on my books!

What is your favorite Quote?
Totally random, but it is a quote from The Emperor’s New Groove:
Cusco: "Let me guess. We're about to go over a huge waterfall."
Patcha: "Yep."
Cusco: "Sharp rocks at the bottom?"
Patcha: "Most likely."
Cusco: "Bring it on."

Favorite Candy?
Candy canes! Seriously, they are like a drug to me… I become a candy cane hoarder at Christmastime.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
Snow White and the Huntsman! Looks amazing and I love Chris Hemsworth!

What's your favorite season/weather?
Summer! I’m a sunglasses, flip-flops and cotton dress kind of girl!

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
Imagine a puppy just let out of its crate – tongue hanging out, tale wagging, jumping on all the furniture with bundled up excitement – I think I was the human version of that! My smile was so wide that it hurt and I may have scared people with my enthusiasm!

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I don’t really embarrass easy, so I’ll freely admit that I’ve read some bodice rippers and have a penchant for terrible reality TV (think Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Keeping Up With The Kardashians…), but one movie obsession I’ve kept secret until now is Crossroads! I love Britney Spears and no matter how horrible that movie is, I still adore it!

Ignite: Midnight Fire Series, Book One
With one last look, one final search of the lines of his face for some sign, Kira turned and ran away from the sound of the man she loved laughing in the face of her death.
When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they're keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan's lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

Simmer: Midnight Fire Series, Book Two
Slowly, like a whisper almost blown away in the wind, two words streaked across her mind: "Kiss me."
Kira may have survived the eclipse, but her troubles are far from over. She's headed to Sonnyville with one goal in mind: to learn more about her parents. But with Luke and Tristan competing for her heart and Diana gunning for her head, time is running out on the search for her mother. Other than family members or friends: a case of books, a box of lighters, and a fishing rod.

One food you would never eat?
Green beans. Ugh. My parents used to make me eat them when I was little till I gagged. Now, I never touch them. That’s one good thing about growing up. LOL

M&M’s

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

Goals for future projects?
I have to write the sequel to my middle grade novel coming out next January. I’m excited to get going on that one.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Definitely reading a good review. It actually springs tears to my eyes. Knowing someone enjoyed something I wrote, means SO much.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
Oh, I love that question. I want to live at Hogwarts and be just like Hermione Granger. How cool would that be?

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
I actually put together a whole soundtrack for Spectral that’s on my website. www.shannonduffylit.com but if I had to choose one song for Jewel, I’d pick Firework by Katy Perry.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Read as much as you possibly can—especially in the genre you like the most and want to write about, and practice, practice, practice. Meet other writer friends and help each other out. Be open to advice and write what you love!

2 Year Blogoversary Giveaway!

I just realized today is my blog's 2 Year Blogoversary.  In all honesty with everything going on in my life right now I've seriously considered closing this blog down as it is currently feeling like a burden instead of something I love doing.  I hate the fact that I've committed to put up posts for authors & publishers and have not been able to do so.  I've not got a review posted in weeks and haven't had time to read anything recently.  I have over 300 emails I need to read and respond to and dozens of giveaways I need to draw winners for. Each day I fall further and further behind.

My leg is healing and I'll be up and around in about a month but the prognosis for my son is still unknown.  I don't want to make a hasty decision and then regret it later. For now I'm going to keep this blog open and just do what I can until my son is doing better and I am back on my feet.

Thank you to all those who have sent kind messages and kept Brett & me in your prayers.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Adam Orser by Daniel Armand

Author Daniel Armand

Daniel Armand lives in Toronto, Ontario. His inspiration behind Adam Orser: Chronicles of Evolution originated during the summer of 1983, after a near death encounter offered an incredible insight into the obscured aspects of life, love, and the progression of the human spirit.
Daniel is currently working on the next novel of the Adam Orser saga. "I truly hope this novel will help inspire readers all over the globe, to embrace their spirituality. It is through clarity of mind and understanding that we may one day 'bloom' into harmony and unlock our limitless potential."

ADAM ORSER: Chronicles of Evolution

Adam Orser seems to be a regular guy, leading a fairly successful life in Toronto as a psychologist with a loving girlfriend, Jazmin.

But there is nothing ordinary about Adam.

Fate interrupts his planned marriage proposal, and a serious car accident thrusts him into a metaphysical reality behind a deep coma that holds his physical body in check. Through an advanced system of training and evolution created by the celestial realm, Adam is called to a dangerous mission with profound implications for the world he knows, and life and death consequences for one missing nine-year old girl, who is no ordinary kidnapped child. Fantastical forces are at work on both sides of the veil between the world we recognize and those yet to be discovered.

Destiny compels Adam to freely choose the part he will play in a no-limits competition between good and evil. Questions of existence, causality, and truth converge as Adam struggles to find his way back to Jazmin and a life that will never be the same.
