Author Interview: A Long Way From You by Gwendolyn Heasley

Welcome back to Author Gwendolyn Heasley
Gwendolyn Heasley is a graduate of Davidson College and the University of Missouri-Columbia where she earned her master’s degree in journalism. When she was a little girl, she desperately wanted to be the next Ann M. Martin- the author of the beloved The Baby-Sitter’s Club series. She’s incredibly grateful that the recession rendered her unemployed and made her chase her nearly forgotten dream. She lives in New York City, teaches college and eats entirely too much mac and cheese for an adult. She’s also currently at work on her third novel for Harper Collins.

INTERVIEW:
Q: If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
A: The past because I would love to meet my ancestors. I want to thank them for their hard work, which enabled me to get where am I today.

Q: Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
A: Read it for two great (in my humble opinion) characters: New York City and Kitsy Kidd.

Q: What inspired you to want to become a writer?
A: The Baby-sitters Club. I would visit the bookstore every day for a week, just waiting for that month’s shipment. I wanted to be Ann M. Martin back then and I still do. I want to give readers what she gave me: fictional friends and lifelong memories.

Q: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
A: Peanut butter and chocolate. It has been since I was little and would visit Baskin Robbins with my baby-sitters.

Q: How do you react to a bad review?
A: I think even the worst reviews still contain great advice. Nobody’s ever written anything about my first book that didn’t have a glimmer of truth in it. I read every review out there and take it all as free advice. I value their opinions and have taken some of their advice in my second novel.

Q: What is your favorite Quote?
A: “There are only 3 colors, 10 digits and 7 notes, it’s what we do with them that’s important.” Jim Rohn
I have this quote hanging above my desk and it inspires me everyday.

Q: How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
A: I had many wonderful friends come to NYC for my first book signing. It was the greatest gift of friendship that I have ever received and I will never forget it. It’s so great to have friends that want to celebrate your success with you as well as help you when you’re down.

Q: Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
A: The letters and emails I’ve received from readers. They make my heart sing. I love connecting with the readers and hearing what they thought about my book.

Q: What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
A: I’m an ABCfamily fanatic and would like anyone reading this to please help me get a writing job there.

Q: Pet Peeves?
A: People who look down at self-publishing. Everyone should be allowed to write and share his or her stories. I love the fact that more and more people are out there writing and making it on their own. It’s so inspiring.

A Long Way From You
For too long, Kitsy has had to satisfy her dreams of becoming a real artist by giving her friends makeovers before prom. So when her best friend Corrinne's family offers to sponsor her for a summer art course in New York City, Kitsy bids a temporary good-bye to Texas to say hello to the West Village. Between navigating the subway and the New Yorkers--namely, the Art Boy who has a nice trick of getting under her skin--Kitsy knows that this summer is going to be about a "lot" more than figure drawing.

INTERVIEW:
What is your favorite flavor or ice cream?

Jamoca Almond Fudge. Notice that the first question answered had to do with food, specifically chocolate!

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Fruit of My Spirit is for anyone who’s ever questioned God’s ability to love and forgive or who’s ever wondered about their place in God’s family or God’s place in theirs.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Yes, I’m working on Book 2. Signs in Life: Meeting God at the Corner of Grace and Mercy tells of those times when God has come alongside and guided, directed and turned me. The book is another collection of short stories, this time recounting when God has met me at life’s crossroads, when I’ve been “on point” with God, not because of anything I’ve done, but because a loving, gracious, merciful God has been there time after time, again and again.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I didn’t plan to be a writer. Even though I majored in English in college, I never enjoyed writing assignments. I actually think it had more to do with being told what to write, rather than the writing itself. Fruit of My Spirit is my first book. I really didn’t intend to write a book. I just wanted my sons Kyle and Kevin to know how I met their father, but one chapter became two chapters and then two chapter became three… Finally I said to anyone who would listen, “I think I wrote a book!”

Before she died, my mom had asked me to write a book. At the time my boys were very small, and the notion of writing was unfathomable. I couldn’t get a grocery list put together! Before my father died, he reminded me that mom had wanted me to write a book. At the time the boys were in college, and the notion of writing was unfathomable. Writers write books. Last year I wrote a book. My boys were now adults and I’d run out of excuses. I was also at that age when I could pause and reflect.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I have been most inspired by others who have said, “I have a story to tell.” I’ve had both older and younger readers come to me with their own stories. If my antics can encourage others to write, I will be both humbled and delighted.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I grew up reading Carolyn Keene’s Nancy Drew mysteries. I devoured them. As a fourth grader, I wanted to grow up and be Nancy Drew. It was the first time that I can remember when I slipped away with a book and didn’t come up for air until reaching the last page.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
I think of Anne Lamott’s book, Bird by Bird in which she tells of the encouragement given to her brother as a writing assignment loomed. Her father’s words were, “Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.” I’ve often heard people say, “I could never write a book.” Not long ago I would have replied the same. Fruit of My Spirit began as a single story. That story led to the next story. We all have stories to tell. Just take it story by story, friends.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Cinque Terre, Italy. Is there a more beautiful place to live and write?

What is your favorite Quote?
On my desk is a rock. The words “Choose joy!” are etched it in. It’s not exactly a quote, but it’s my inspiration for each day.

Hidden talent?
How about a talent that should remain hidden? After a thirty-year break, I began playing violin again. I absolutely delight in the music, but I have to admit that I have moments of sheer inspiration and others that are truly cringe-worthy.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I had an Appreciation Dinner with those acknowledged in the book. It was a delightful time with family and friends at a local restaurant. I realized early on in the evening that it was one of those rare occasions when we get to thank those dearest to us. I did so for three hours!

What is your guilty pleasure?
TV’s Mad Men and Downton Abbey

Favorite places to travel?
As I write I’m enjoying free time with my husband in Palm Springs. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so we always look forward to our annual trek to the desert. After months of gray skies and drizzle, we skip onto the airplane. We also enjoy San Jose del Cabo with our boys. Last Christmas we met my brother and his family for a great week of sun, surf and relaxation.

Print or Ebook?
Both. Some books work on my Kindle. Some books I’ve just got to hold.

Fruit of My Spirit

Fruit of My Spirit is a memoir of missteps and misdeeds in which Deanna Nowadnick writes of the hugeness of God’s love and faithfulness. Reframing life in God’s grace, she discovers an indescribable, indefinable, inexplicable love that has encircled her without fail throughout life. Fruit of My Spirit is for anyone who’s ever questioned God’s ability to love and forgive, who’s ever wondered about their place in God’s family or God’s place in theirs. Deanna offers hope for those who dare to question, who secretly wonder, and who fear to ask. Through stories of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, you will experience the enormity of God, too.

INTERVIEW
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
My dogs, my computer, and a good book.

What is one book everyone should read?
The Talisman by Stephen King

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Half fish/Half bird: I would want to fly freely like a bird above the oceans, fields of flowers, mountains, and forests, and swim effortlessly in the deep blue seas.

Night owl, or early bird?
When I'm in a creative mood then I'm a night owl. At night, when everyone is asleep and the stars and moon are out, is the best time for my creative side to shine. But when I want to get the most out of my day with chores, marketing my books, and spending time with my dogs, then I'm an early bird.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
My books explore the fantastical notion that the love of a dog is truly a magical blessing sent from above.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
The fascination of how every dog has their own unique personality inspired many of my what if questions that formed my fictional fantasy books.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published. The smiles, thanks, and emails, from people of all ages and all professions, identifying with my books through the love for their dogs.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
My books of course! Angel in a Fur Coat; Legend of the Pink Toe; and Wayward Angels. Who wouldn't want to live in a world full of angel dogs!

What is your dream cast for your book?
I would Love for my books to be made into a Disney movie where magic comes alive!

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
The song titled: Everybody got their something, by Nikka Costa

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Believe in what you write and never give up.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Stephen King, and the book would be somewhat spooky, somewhat fantasy, and involves animals, dreams, and the spiritual world.

Print or Ebook?
I like print for the physical matter of a book and I like Ebook for the new technology. All my books are available in both formats.

Coke or Pepsi?
Neither. They both give me the hiccups! I prefer water.

Beach or Pool?
I love the beach for the fresh air and atmosphere but I do not like to get sandy. I like the pool for swimming and it's anti sand.

Cats or Dog?
I love all animals. Each species has their own unique fascinating characteristics. But I love the dog's silly sweet innocence and dedicated love.

What is you favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Drawing, painting, writing, and reading.

Angel in a Fur Coat
Explore the wonderful world of dogs through the eyes of a special little angel whose everlasting dream is to be a person's best friend.
The story begins in a far away place somewhere over the horizon where angels train to become dogs on earth. The angels attend the K9 Academy where they are taught about various dog breeds and learn of different dog jobs and most importantly, what it means to be a dog. When they graduate they get a fur coat and are born on earth as a dog to find the person they were made for.
In book one, the fable of the pink toe is explored and in book two, the legend is unleashed.

Li Li: The True Story of a Goober

Interview
If you were a superhero what would your name be?

Speedy Multi-tasker- it’s a lame name but that’s what I’m good at.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl - I’ve been a nocturnal creature since childhood and I don’t understand how people can be super cheery at 7am.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your books.
Every author probably thinks this about their work but the stories are different from a lot of ideas that are out there at the moment and they will keep you thinking long after you’ve turned the last page.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m working on a young adult paranormal romance at the moment. I’m thinking I might focus on novellas in the near future but let’s see what happens.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Being told in a review that my fairytale retelling is more interesting than the original Cinderella story! I hold on to that sentence whenever I feel self-doubt creeping up on me.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don’t give up but make sure to listen to your critics. They usually have a good point or two.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Oh yes. Jo from “The Other Slipper” – I’m pretty obstinate and she is too.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Don’t give up. Oh, and edit, edit, edit.

Hidden talent?
Not really hidden, I sing (much to the annoyance of the people around me).

How do you react to a bad review?
I haven’t really had one but when I have an iffy one, after freaking out for a bit and convincing myself that I am the worst writer ever, I read the review again and try to take some good out of it. Then I talk myself back up. It’s a pretty exhausting process but I can’t seem to stop doing it.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Absence of a timepiece - I am obsessed with my wristwatch and fall to pieces when I’m without one.

Favorite smell?
Rain falling on dusty earth – but only when I’m not standing in a sheltered spot.

Print or Ebook?
Aren’t they both great?

Sweet or Salty?
Both – I always get a mix of sweet and salty popcorn at the cinema because I love the taste of both at the same time.

What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Curled up in bed with the telly on. Mmmmmmm.

The Altercation of Vira

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: In Search of Truth by Robert L. Smith

Welcome to Author Robert L. Smith

Robert L. Smith has been a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1971. He has served as a bishop and is presently serving as a seminary teacher. He speaks at youth and single adult conferences on archeological evidences of the Book of Mormon and has published articles on related subjects on the Ancient America Foundation (AAF) website, and in numerous issues of the Internet-based news magazine The New Archaeology Review. His first book, In Search of Truth: From the Creation to the Restoration, is a result of extensive research and study of acclaimed current and past LDS authors on the history of the early Church established by Jesus Christ and his apostles and the subsequent apostasy leading to the Protestant Reformation and the restoration of the gospel by the Lord through Joseph Smith.
http://www.in-search-of-truth.com/

Interview
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
My book shows through historical facts and Bible scriptures that the Bible predicted a falling away from the true gospel taught by Jesus, and therefore a restoration of the primitive Church of Jesus Christ was needed to prepare for the Lord’s Second Coming.

If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
I would live in the United States of America in this time period because of the restoration of the Gospel and the true Church of Jesus Christ.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
For 30 years I have collected archaeological evidences of the Book of Mormon, and began speaking at Youth and Single Adult Conferences in the Church. I was invited by a friend to write articles about the Book of Mormon on his internet news magazine, The New Archaeology Review. I also wrote an article which is currently posted on the Ancient America Foundation(AAF) web site.

How did you know you should become an author?
I became interested in the history of the primitive Christian Church between the death of the Apostles and the formation of the Universal Church by Constantine. I did a lot of personal research in recent books by BYU Professors of Ancient Scripture, and discovered so much that I did not know previously, so I wanted to do an overview of the history of Christianity from the Creation to the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Several people have told me how much they love the book and want to share it with their friends who are not yet LDS. My purpose in writing this book was to strengthen testimonies of new coverts and provide new historical data to seasoned members, and tell the story of the apostasy and the need for the restoration in away that all Christians could understand ti.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
I would advise any new author to pay an editor before submitting their manuscript to a publisher, and then to filter the advice of the editor, and make the book as final as possible, including foot notes and sources before submitting it to publishers. The editor can provide valuable grammatical, structure, and technical advise on how to document sources, but the author needs to retain control of his or her themes, messages and ultimate story to be told.

Which authors have influence you most how?
Hugh Nibley’s extensive writings on the primitive church provide deep insight into ancient documents and the workings of early Christianity. Elaine Pagel’s book, the Gnostic Gospels gave me an excellent summary and intimate details of the persecutions of the early Christians and the heretical beliefs of the Gnostics who fabricated gospels and exalted themselves above the apostles, while they wrote false gospels in the names of long deceased apostles.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
I am an early-morning Seminary Teacher for High School students, so my alarm goes off at 4:25 AM. I drive to the Church to set up my classroom, then take a 20-minute round trip to pick up a student who has not transportation to Seminary. Class begins at 5:45 AM and lasts until 6:35 AM, after which I drive a student 15 minutes to his High School. I sometimes go to a Gymn near my work for a 30-minute workout before starting work as an aerospace engineer at Honeywell from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, followed by a 30 minute drive home for dinner, and then starting on my Seminary Lesson for the next day, with bed-time target of 10:00 PM.

I finalized the book in my spare time on week-ends and summer vacations from Seminary. I am married with only me and my wife at home, but I have an 88 year-old mother in a nursing home who requires a lot of my attention. I am also the Scout Committee Chairman for the Boy Scout Troop and Varsity Team for my Ward.

What do you do in your free time?
I have very little free time. When I have some, I read or rest.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?
I love to write and I had a story to tell about all of the new information that I learned from my personal study of the primitive Christian Church. I read dozens of books which are cited in my book, In Search of Truth from the Creation to the Restoration, an Overview of the History of Christianity. I wanted to summarize this history in a high-level form for some events, and drill down to reveal great detail for the history of the primitive church, the causes and results of the apostasy, the need for continuing revelation to prophets in our day, and the story of the restoration of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith. There are so many Christianls today who have been falsely taught the Mormon’s are not Christians, yet they know very little truth about the predicted apostasy, the need for a restoration, or the detailed story of the formation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or the contents of the Book of Mormon.

In Search of Truth
Travel back in time and discover the true gospel as taught by the earliest prophets. Well-researched and skillfully written, this intriguing read compares modern revelation with ancient sources like the Clay Tablets of Elba and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Perfect for all Church members, it's an inspiring reminder of God's love for all his children, no matter where or when they lived.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Starcrossed & Dreamless by Josephine Angelini

Welcome to Author Josephine Angelini
Josephine Angelini is a Massachusetts native and the youngest of eight siblings. A real-live farmer's daughter, Josie graduated from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in theater, with a focus on the classics. She now lives in Los Angeles with her husband.

https://twitter.com/josieangelini

Interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
If I could just pop in on the past, and leave, that would be great, but on the whole I’d rather go into the future. There was no indoor plumbing for most of the past, and no antibiotics, so if you got a splinter you could be dead in a week. Not romantic. Plus, women weren’t treated very well anywhere in the world until just a few decades ago. I’d end up a slave, probably, for opening my big yap. All in all I think I’d be much better off in the future. I don’t have any illusions about “the good old days”, which I think is just a fancy way of saying, “we’re trying to make the feudal system look good, but it’s hard, because people kept dying of plague.”

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
I would want a good pilot, a working plane, and plenty of fuel. I don’t do captivity. Nor do I like giving in to my apparent fate. I’ll fight to the last.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I’m not an ice cream kind of girl. A few bites and I’m over it. Same with cake, or anything like that. After that initial, “oh my god, it’s so good I want to rub it all of my body” moment has passed, I’m done.

One food you would never eat?
Milk-fed veal. It’s just cruel.

What is your favorite Quote?
I don’t know if it’s my favorite or not, but in high school, my pal Matt Mitchell left this quote from Robert Frost and line of advice in my senior yearbook:
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.” Never sleep, Josie.
Kind of awesome, right?

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
The first thing I ever wanted to be was a Jedi Knight. My sister Martha blew it for me though. She told me Jedi Knights weren’t real. I was devastated. (And yes, I realize that I’ve always been a giant geek!)

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
I wrote a short story about a monster that haunts this one tiny apartment in Soho, NYC. The monster is made up of the dust of decades of miserable tenants, and it pulls itself together with each new inhabitant’s misery. Dust is mostly skin, by the way, so the monster looks like a patchwork of the all the people that have lived there before, stuck together in this really unpleasant manor. My Skin Monster is probably one of my craziest ideas.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
“Don’t stop believing! Hold on to that feeling!” Journey.

Hidden talent?
I can juggle.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
“The Long, Slow, Hard, and usually Stupid Way.”

Starcrossed
Set on the island of Nantucket, STARCROSSED tells the tale of Helen Hamilton, a young woman whose destiny is forever altered when she meets Lucas Delos and tries to kill him in front of her entire high school. Which is terribly inconvenient, not only because Lucas is the most beautiful boy on the island, but also because Helen is so achingly shy she suffers physical pain whenever she is given too much attention.
Making matters worse, Helen is beginning to suspect she’s going crazy. Whenever she’s near Lucas or any member of his family she sees the ghostly apparitions of three women weeping bloody tears, and suffers the burden of an intense and irrational hate. She soon learns that she and Lucas are destined to play the leading roles in a Greek tragedy that the Three Fates insist on repeating over and over again throughout history. Like her namesake, Helen of Troy, she’s destined to start a war by falling in love. But even though Lucas and Helen can see their own star-crossed destiny, they’re still powerfully attracted to each other. Will they give up their personal happiness for the greater good, or risk it all to be together?

Dreamless
Can true love be forgotten?
As the only scion who can descend into the Underworld, Helen Hamilton has been given a nearly impossible task. My Loving Vigil Keeping by Carla Kelly
Della's giving up all the comforts of bustling Salt Lake City to teach school in a rural coal mining camp. Little does she know, she may soon be giving up her heart as well. But when tragedy strikes in the Scofield Mine, Della's life will be changed forever. Based on true events, this thrilling new romance from award-winning and bestselling author Carla Kelly is a must-read.

My Loving Vigil Keeping will be released on August 14, 2012

About the Author:

Award-winning author Carla Kelly is a veteran of the New York and international publishing world. The author of more than thirty novels and novellas for Donald I. Fine Co., Signet, and Harlequin, Carla is the recipient of two Rita Awards (think Oscars for romance writing) from Romance Writers of America and two Spur Awards (think Oscars for western fiction) from Western Writers of America.

Recently, she’s been writing Regency romances (think Pride and Prejudice) set in the Royal Navy’s Channel Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars between England and France. She comes by her love of the ocean from her childhood as a Navy brat.

Carla’s history background makes her no stranger to footnote work, either. During her National Park Service days at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, Carla edited Friedrich Kurz’s fur trade journal. She recently completed a short history of Fort Buford, where Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881.

Following the “dumb luck” principle that has guided their lives, the Kellys recently moved to Wellington, Utah, from North Dakota and couldn’t be happier in their new location. In her spare time, Carla volunteers at the Railroad and Mining Museum in Helper, Utah. She likes to visit her five children, who live here and there around the United States. Her favorite place in Utah is Manti, located after a drive on the scenic byway through Huntington Canyon.

And why is she so happy these days? Carla is enjoying writing for an LDS audience now, where she feels most at home.

Blogging, Word Verification & Spam Comments

Anyone else getting spammed by annoying comments?  Blogger is really good at catching them so they never actually show up on my blog but I get an email sent to me anytime someone comments on my blog.

Here are a few recent spam comments I've received.

This one cracked me up:

Amazing! This blog looks just like my old one! It's on a completely different subject but it has pretty much the same page layout and design. Wonderful choice of colors! Feel free to visit my web site:

Since I have a custom designed blog I don't think it could possibly look anything like her old blog.

Here's another one that was on a post that didn't have a video:

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You clearly know what youre talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your weblog when you could be giving us something informative to read? Also visit my web site:
Write more?  The title of my blog is I Am A Reader, Not A Writer!

Personally I really dislike word verification/captcha so I don't have it enabled on my blog.  I get quite a bit of traffic on my site and haven't had too many issues with spammers.  I get a couple spam comments each day but they go right into my spam folder.  To be safe I have my settings so that comment moderation is enabled on all posts over 14 days old. Even still Blogger catches nearly all spam comments even on newer posts and they end up in my spam folder instead of being published.

Do you have many problems with spammers commenting on your blog?

Do you use word verification on your comments?  If so why?  Have you tried turning it off?  If so what happened?

Do these comments actually do any good and make it through to actually be posted anywhere?

Curse of the Beast by Ashley Lavering
A dark shadow stalks the night, watching her—waiting to claim what is his.
Seventeen-year-old Tayla Jonas longs for a simple life, but after a traumatizing family loss, she is forced to be both mother and sister to her cousins while caring for her mentally unstable aunt. Moving to her grandma’s quiet town of Cody, Wyoming, Tayla finds some normalcy with her quirky green activist friend, Chel, who spends no time converting her to vegetarianism.
A few weeks into her new school, Tayla catches the eye of Kyle Harrington—the high school quarterback and resident millionaire—who can seduce any girl with his charismatic charm, including Tayla. But Kyle is anything but what he seems.
Walking through City Park, Tayla is unaware that an ancient curse has her in its crosshairs. The silver moonlight illuminates the path to her van, sprinkling shadows like evil twinkling eyes. Tayla’s skin prickles, and she turns. Something—or someone—is watching her.
A powerful werewolf steps from the shadows. An iridescent blue chord shoots from him and slams into her stomach, dissolving instantly. Pain wracks her body, and she tries to scramble to safety, but his silver eyes freeze her in place as the curse binds them together. The chord settles deep inside her body, coiling with dread around her heart.
Dismayed by the prospect of a werewolf for a shadow, Tayla fears for the safety of her friends and family. How will she keep the werewolf’s insatiable hunger in check? Her plans for a vegetarian lifestyle quickly dwindle away, and Tayla wrestles to fit her frazzled life back together—piece by piece. But what she didn’t expect was her attraction to the werewolf or the power of the full moon.
Will Tayla be strong enough to survive the Curse of the Beast? Or will it consume her like so many before? Find out in the first installment of this unique retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

About the Author:

A nomad at heart, I currently claim Nevada as my home. I have a wonderful husband and two young children that put up with my “writing time.” When I’m not pondering on a spell that will magically calm the ferocious winds that plague the air around me, you can find me, with notepad in hand, frantically jotting down ideas in those short moments between caring for my girls.
Art and science have always been my yin and yang. Throughout my college career, I shifted between the two, but in the end I graduated with a Bachelors of Mathematics and Science from the University of Wyoming.
Charging into adventures and discovering something new has always been a passion of mine, but as a teenager I use to run screaming from a reading or writing assignment. Looking back, the irony isn’t lost on me. Now you can’t catch me without a book in hand or without an open word document. Every time a new idea pops into my mind my heart races and my hand twitch to write it. In that moment, I have my writer's high and pray it will sustain me through thousands of hours of revision.

Author Interview: The Unsacred Gift by C.S. Dorsey

Welcome to Author C.S. Dorsey

C. S. Dorsey currently lives in Northern California. She graduated from the University of Phoenix with an Associate’s Degree in Financial Services, and is currently working for a financial institution. She never thought about writing until one day this girl started talking to her in her head and never stop.

Interview:
What inspired you to become a writer?
I really didn't have any inspiration. The character(s) just kind of came to me. I was thinking the idea of writing a book would be nice, but I never really thought that I could actually do it. I told my mom that I wanted to write a book, but she just looking at me like I was crazy. I wrote one page one day and then left it in my word doc file for two days. Then all of a sudden this voice just came to me in my head. From then on I just wrote everything that this voice was saying. Two and a half months later The Unsacred Gift was complete. Everything I write now the characters speaks on their own. I am just the ghost writer for them...LOL

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
My favorite book when I was a teen was The Coldest Winter Ever by Sista Soulja. It took a while for me to get into reading. My mom would try and make me read when I was younger, but my love for TV was greater. It wasn’t until I read that book that I started really reading. By this time I was in my junior year in high school. Better late than never.

What is your favorite Quote?
“It’s not about what you know, its who you know.”

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
The best advice I have ever got was from my mom. She is a very supportive mother in everything I do (that is legal...LOL). She always tell me, “it never hurts to try.” I live by this every day. I tell anyone that is scared to do something, “just go for it. You just never know what will happen.”s

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
My advice is read...a whole lot. Not only read books in the genre that you want to write in, but read other genres as well. Then that way you can get an idea of the different styles of writing. Also if you hear voices its ok, just write whatever the voice says :)

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
LOL!! Funny you should mention that. There is a theme song for my book that I what to list and that is...Syrup & Honey by Duffy. Its a scene in the book where Sissy (the main character) and Chris (long lost sweet heart) have a “moment” in the book. I think this song (one of many I listed for this book) would be perfect for that part.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If you want a book to suck you in where you can’t get out, then The Unsacred Gift is it.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I never dreamed of becoming a write. I wanted to be a famous singer and a fashion designer. I guess destiny had its own agenda for me :)

Unsacred Gift
Sicily "Sissy" Monroe has all the qualities of a perfect young lady. She is almost where she wants to be in life. But lying deep in the pupil of her eyes hold something that she cannot get rid of which interferes with her plans. She fights everyday with no one but herself. After having her first vision at age six of her sister's (Misty) disappearance and the dreams of failing to save her, Sissy want no part in another person's fate. For years, Sissy tried hard to avoid contact with people because she feared foreseeing their death. In keeping with this, she tries to stay away from her family. Little did Sissy know she could not run from her past, or her gift. She hopes someone will put her out of her misery. But she will soon discover that her visions and dreams were just a mere image of herself.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Falling Immortality by Robert Downs

Welcome to Author Robert Downs

Robert aspired to be a writer before he realized how difficult the writing process was. Fortunately, he'd already fallen in love with the craft, otherwise Casey might never have seen print. Originally from West Virginia, he has lived in Virginia, Massachusetts, and now resides in New Mexico.

Interview:
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If you like MANfiction, along the lines of Robert B. Parker and Michael Connelly, then you might enjoy my debut novel about a playboy PI, a mysterious bartender named Dragon Lady, two girlfriends, and a two-year old murder.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Absolutely. Writing is as much a part of my life as breathing or dreaming. If I gave it up, which I have done for brief periods of time in my life, I’ve felt incomplete. Graceful Immortality is the second book in the Casey Holden mystery series, and it’s with my publisher Rainbow Books, Inc. right now. I’m told I’m improving with each manuscript, and I’m getting more and more comfortable with Casey Holden. He’s like a long lost friend that I have the pleasure of visiting with on occasion, and he tells me his stories, however crazy they might seem initially. And it’s a friendship I treasure each time I sit down at the computer.

Even though I’m a very goal-oriented person, I don’t have many specific writing goals. I’d just like to write more days than I don’t, and I’d like to improve with each manuscript. Once I’ve established myself a bit in the mystery genre, I’d like to branch out to thrillers, as well as more general fiction. But that’ll be several years down the road.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
The movie Finding Forrester helped change my way of thinking when it came to writing. I always hated writing in school, because it was all about the rules (not necessarily a bad thing), and it was forced down my throat. I never thought of writing for myself, until I watched Finding Forrester. After the movie, though, something clicked for me, and I realized for a shy guy I had a whole lot to say. I opened this massive floodgate that I haven’t been able to close since. And if I’m lucky, it’ll never close.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I’d have to say inspiring one of my good friends to branch out from reading mainly non-fiction. To be able to influence someone in that fashion means more to me than I could ever put into words.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Write because you love it, and because you have to do it. If you write for any other reason, then you’ll probably give up before you ever see publication, if you go the traditional route, unless you’re the next incarnation of Stephen King or J.K. Rowling. In the end, persistence and a love of writing will save you. Not much else will.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
When I was little, I wanted to be a garbage man, and I used to practice when my mom and I went to the grocery store. I’d hang off to the side, one-handed, and I’d toss random cans into the cart when my mom had her back to me. But I did always love reading, and when I was smaller, being read to. That was how I woke up in the morning: with a stack of books taller than I was and either my mom or dad’s lap. I’d sit for hours listening to story after story. Out of all the gifts they’ve been able to give me that was certainly one of the best.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Absolutely. I see myself in virtually every character I write, to varying degrees, because in all cases, my characters come from firsthand experiences, whether that’s me, people I’ve met, books I’ve read, or TV shows or movies I’ve seen. Most people would be surprised to know how much Casey Holden is like me. He’s what my dad calls my alter-ego, and that’s probably not too far from the truth. He’s an exaggerated version of me, without the filter and conscience to help guide him. And that’s certainly one of the reasons why he’s so much fun to write.

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
Every writing idea I come up with is crazy, because all of them start out as a germ of an idea, and I have to inject it with a serious amount of steroids before I ever actually get anywhere. The creative process isn’t for the faint of heart: it holds more thrills than Cedar Point’s Raptor, and that blinking cursor scares the crap out of me every time I see it, but somehow I muster up enough courage to plow through the blank spaces.

But I was probably completely insane in my approach to the Immortality series, as I’d already written two sequels, starting with Graceful Immortality, before I’d even published the first manuscript, and in the process of publishing Falling Immortality, I’d already begun work on three more. I had strong faith, or possibly complete insanity, or maybe even a little of both to become that invested in a character. You could also make the argument that Casey was like the annoying friend who just doesn’t seem to go away. In the end, though, writing helped keep me sane throughout the querying process, and then through the extended publication process.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
At one point I had lost faith in the whole publishing industry and struggled with whether I should keep at it, keep trying to publish, or whether I should give up. I don’t remember exactly when I questioned my decision, but I do know what triggered it: a pile of rejection letters. I’d been struggling for years to break into the publishing industry, although in hindsight, and like most writers, I started submitting query letters prematurely. I asked my mom whether or not I should give up, and she only had one question for me: Do you love it? I told her yes. And that was pretty much the end of the discussion. So I kept at it, and now that I’ve published a novel, I’ll keep at it, even if it’s the only published novel I ever have.

How do you react to a bad review?
The only way an author should. Do absolutely nothing. For whatever reason, the reviewer didn’t understand the point of your book, and there’s nothing you can do to change his or her mind. By responding, it will only make you look worse, and you’re liable to stoke this reviewer’s fires even more. If you want to do something positive with something negative, let it drive you to even greater success. Anything worth doing will have hiccups along the way. If you write a book for everyone, you’ll end up pleasing no one. You want to write the book you were meant to write, and that means you’ll face some tough outcomes as a writer, but you and your writing will be stronger in the end.

Which authors have influenced you most?
Believe it or not, every author influences me in some form or fashion, which is why I read voraciously both inside and outside the mystery/thriller genre. But I’d have to say Robert B. Parker, Lawrence Sanders, and Gregory McDonald are all writers I was reading around the time I discovered Casey.

What do you do in your free time?
Well, as one of my colleagues told me recently, when she realized how much I was promoting my writing, she told me that I didn’t really have all that much free time. And I’d have to say I agree with her in some respects, but I love writing, and everything associated with it, even editing, so it’s not a chore for me: it’s actually quite a bit of fun.

But when I’m not reading, writing, or promoting my writing, and I’d lump all three under the giant writing umbrella, my wife and I are doing our best to singlehandedly keep Netflix in business. We have both the streaming and DVD mail-in option. I also enjoy traveling, but I don’t get to do quite as much of it as I’d like.

Print or Ebook?
Both, actually. One of the best feelings in the world is holding a book, especially your own, but I also enjoy ebooks for the convenience. Jeff Bezos and Amazon have made the ebook buying process way too easy. I find myself clicking that buy now button more often than I expect to, but I’d rather have a shelf, as well as a Kindle, full of books than not, since the only way to improve as a writer, other than placing butt to chair, is to read like someone has a nine-millimeter pointed at your head.

Action or Drama?
Action, definitely, although I do enjoy the occasional drama. I had a friend tell me once that I had way too many chick flicks, but I also enjoy the Bourne trilogy, Inception, The Town, Thor, The Avengers, and the first two films in Christopher Nolan’s planned Batman trilogy, as well as other action flicks. I’m an individual who has never limited myself to specific genres, whether that’s movies, music, or reading.

Sweet or Salty?
Definitely sweet. I have a sweet tooth that rivals the size of Idaho. If I wasn’t so diligent about brushing and flossing, and seeing the dentist, I’d have probably lost all my teeth by now, and I’m not even thirty-three yet.

Facebook or Twitter?
Facebook, definitely. My life isn’t interesting enough for Twitter, and I’m not sure how well I would adjust to 140 character tweeting. It’s enough of a challenge to confine myself to Facebook status updates.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Well, I’ve shocked almost everyone in my life with Falling Immortality and my playboy PI, to include, friends, colleagues, and even my mom. I had one friend tell me that it was like learning a priest had lived a double life, or something along those lines. Not that my life resembles that of the priesthood, but I am a shy guy by nature, who happens to have a very active imagination, and who isn’t afraid to color outside of the lines. It wasn’t until the end of my freshman year in band that I was able to march, and I’d like to think that has something to do with my inability to conform, although certainly a good part of that was my lack of rhythm.

Falling Immortality
Debut, hard-boiled mystery fiction for men. Stephen King’s son describes a fitting genre as MANfiction (the opposite of Chick lit).
Casey Holden, former cop, current PI in Virginia Beach, VA, screens his clients the way he screens his women, based on whichever drop-dead gorgeous woman happens to waltz through his door first and manages to hold his attention. So when Felicity Farren, widow-at-large, struts into his office asking him to solve the two-year-old murder of her husband Artis, she intrigues him. When Casey starts digging, he learns the murder isn’t what it seems to be and he doesn’t have a big enough shovel to unearth the truth. And to top it all off, his former rival at the police department, Greg Gilman, is determined to disrupt his investigation. Casey's challenge is to learn what really happened to Artis, and why Gilman can’t seem to remove his head from his butt. And he’ll need all of his wits to complete the task.
