Operation: Reuse It by Sabbithry Persad

With colorful illustrations and fact-filled diagrams complementing the adventure, this picture book tells the story of how Peter and his friends help Mr. Ogilvy rediscover forgotten belongings in his shed. They help him organize and distribute the unwanted stuff to reuse centers in the community, learning the many ways and benefits of reusing. The children have fun with forgotten treasures such as old toys, electronics, art supplies, and even a broken-down car, while they work together to determine how the items should be reused, in the process saving resources, energy, and money, while diverting materials from the landfill.

Sabbithry has been writing stories and poems since she was a child growing up on the island of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. She won her first award at the age of fourteen in her high school’s Language Arts Showcase. Her childhood was filled with many siblings, several pets and farm animals, and countless well-read, entertaining books from literature and scientific magazines to comic books and encyclopedias.

10 Ways to Recycle with Children...

There are many lessons children learn from recycling and volunteering. These activities build character and good habits that help to build a sustainable society and a healthier environment. They help build leaders, who feel great knowing that they are helping the community, the environment, and the future of the planet.

1. Put on a scavenger hunt with the different recyclable material types: plastic, glass, metal (aluminum and steel), and paper. Then show kids how to identify and separate them.
2. Make recycling a fun family activity by reusing unwanted items, donating them, hosting a yard sale or making something new from them, like arts and crafts.
3. Clean up and beautify the community by volunteering for city or school recycle events.
4. Start a fundraising campaign/program. Collect aluminum cans and other materials then sell them to a reseller in your area.
5. Start a new game to learn the seven types of plastic. Make a sign with the plastic symbols and test each other to see who remembers them all.
6. Have family story time. Read Where Do Recyclable Materials Go? and use the lesson plan and activities at the back of the book to learn together.
7. Get together with neighbors and put on a recycle play for the community. You can also video tape it.
8. Start a recycle race or event with neighbors to see who can recycle the most items.
9. Visit a MURF (Materials Recovery Facility or Recycle Center) in your community.
10. Play a word game with kids where they try to make as many words as they can from the words “recyclable materials.”

This book reminded me of the old Magic School Bus books in the way it was written and the illustrations. 

The family in this book is trying to find their dog who has followed the Recycling truck.  In the process of looking for their dog they learn about what can be recycled and where materials go after they are collected.  The take a tour of a recycling center and learn how materials are sorted and what they are used for.  This is an educational book and I learned a few things I didn't know.  Too bad we don't have a local Recycling Center, I'm sure it would make a fun field trip for kids.

What is one book everyone should read?
Leaves of Grass

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
That would be pistachio, and more recently pumpkin spice.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Swiss muesli with freshly shredded green apple.

What's your favorite music genre? Favorite artist? Song?
I not sure I have a favorite...I listen to all types classical, jazz, rock, grunge, pop, Latin, French, reggae, and so on. Favorite artist…that would be the same as favorite music. Lately I’ve been listening to John Lennon, Filippa Giordano and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
Setting the mood for writing varies from project to project. Some projects require low music, natural sounds or talking in the background, while others are better with quiet surroundings for reflection.

Night owl, or early bird?
Both, a night owl when working on a project and an early bird when on hiatus.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be, male or female, doesn't matter and why? Whenever I hear of the Greek Gods I have a flashback of reading Oedipus Rex, the Iliad and the Odyssey, and Clash of the Titans (the classic version). Then several years ago I entered a museum and saw Nike, winged victory. It’s such a lovely piece. When I look at it, I see strength and inspiration. I now have a small version of it as a reminder.

Skittles or M&Ms?
Pistachios or Almonds ; )

Favorite Cartoon?
Mazinger Z.

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?
Tennis.

Where is your favorite place to read/write?
I love to read when I’m cuddled up on a comfy plush sofa and a throw over my knees. When I’m writing, I like to have my computer and great scenery like looking out to the ocean or some body of water.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
The first and foremost benefit of this book is helping in a small way to build a sustainable world.

What is your favorite book that has been made into a movie?
Grapes of Wrath is one of them.

What do you do when you are in-between books?
Spend time with family and friends.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Sleeping in late.
