Guest Post: Author Bonnie J. Doerr - Island Sting

Welcome to Author Bonnie J. Doerr. Yesterday I reviewed Bonnie's book Island Sting.  Today I've welcoming Bonnie to my site for a guest post.

How can a teen with no money help protect endangered animals or the environment?

Oh dear. You may be sorry you asked this question, Kathy. I could write a book. Wait. I already did. Not a green how-to though. Others have done that much better than I ever could (For example: The Green Teen by Jenn Savedge and Generation Green by Linda Sivertsen and Tosh Sivertsen).

The best thing teens can do to protect the environment is to set a good example. Be strong enough to ignore anyone who thinks it’s cool to toss trash out of their car window. It costs nothing to recycle and stash trash. It’s easy to carry a litter bag in your car and empty it at a trash container outside any retail establishment.

Teens can find fun fabric bags to use for shopping instead of accepting plastic bags to carry their purchases. Plastic bags often blow out of trash containers and garbage trucks, creating ecological havoc. Reducing garbage roadside not only makes for a more pleasant visual environment (hopefully contributing to neighborhood pride) but also protects wildlife.

It costs nothing to volunteer for events like neighborhood clean sweeps or simply to pick up a few pieces of litter each day and put them in a trash container. It’s free and can be a fun social experience to join an environmental group online or in person. Check out http://www.teensturninggreen.org/

Teens can reduce their carbon footprint with creative takes on fashion. Instead of buying new clothes that travel thousands of miles using scads of energy, teens can hold fashion swap parties. Everyone brings clothes they’re tired of, then trades or combines separates into new looks or even alters pieces in creative ways. A fashion show makes a grand finale.

But what would life be like without a new outfit once in a while? When buying that mood booster, choose an outfit that doesn’t require dry cleaning. Not only is taking clothes to the cleaners a hassle, but it’s expensive. If dry cleaning is an absolute must (not only is dry cleaning not really *dry*, but it often isn’t needed even though the label says so), try to find a shop that uses greener methods (wet-cleaning or liquid CO2) to reduce its toxic load. Check this list to find a green cleaner near you.
http://www.epa.gov/dfe/pubs/garment/gcrg/cleanguide.pdf

Teens can support companies like Patagonia. Patagonia helps reduce the load on our planet by collecting worn-out clothes and rebuilding them into new garments. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_34/b3998431.htm

Teens can also become smart label shoppers. By reducing their use of petroleum cosmetic products, they can help reduce the effects of climate change. Petroleum (in the form of paraffin oil, propylene glycol, and ethylene) is found in products like lip balm, lotions, lubricants, and many plastic covered products. Choose products containing beeswax, cocoa butter, and vegetable oils instead.

Carpooling to school is a great way to save energy. It can be a social occasion. Driving smoothly and keeping tires inflated saves gas also. And packing a waste free lunch is an easy way to help the planet. A typical American student can generate 67 pounds of school lunch packaging waste per school year. Wash and reuse all containers. When possible, stay away from any throwaway containers. Carry a refillable mug to Starbucks, a reusable stainless water bottle. http://www.ecomall.com/greenshopping/wastefree.htm

As job placement in traditional positions continues to be more challenging, teens should be aware that green careers are growing in leaps and bounds. It costs nothing to explore these careers and in the end may inspire a lucrative profession.

Blog Tour: Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Princess and Missy's Magical Adventures by Michelle Nicole Martin

Welcome to author Michelle Nicole Martin.

Michelle grew up in California. She started writing poetry when she was thirteen years old, and began writing children’s stories at the age of thirty-one.

Michelle’s dog, Princess, was the inspiration for Princess and Missy's Magical Adventures; The Crystal Heart, the first book in a series.  Be on the lookout for The Ruby Door, the second part of this series.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would travel into the future in about 100 years from now. I’m curious to see what earth looks like. I am wondering if everyone will be in a flying car. I also want to know if people end up living on other planets such as Mars.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
I like the ideas of having all famous women dine with me. I choose Oprah Winfrey because I think she seems loving and she gives back to a lot of people. I then would invite Hilary Clinton. I wanted her to be President of the United States. Her husband was President when I was in the Navy. We were at peace and the economy was great. Two of my guests are singers. They are Enya and Sade. I love their music. Finally, my last guest is J.K. Rowling, author of Harry Potter. I think the six of us would have a fabulous time.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
The three things I would bring is a lighter, knife, and some rope. I then would be able to start fires, hunt for food, and built a hut. The way I could write is burning bark as a pen and rocks or trees as paper.

What is one book everyone should read?
A friend of mine gave me a book, “The Shack” as a present. He said, “This book changed my life. You need to read this.” I read it slowly to digest the meaning of the book. It opened up my heart and mind. The Shack was an inspirations book. I think everyone should read it.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Hello everyone! I am Super Shells and here to help you!

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
My superpower that I choose is healing people from any disease or ailment just by thinking about them.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I love chocolate mint ice cream. Mint and chocolate are two of my favorite flavors.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
My best friend Michael makes the best omelets. They are delicious especially when the cheese is melting over the vegetables and meat. Sometimes, he comes over to my home to cook breakfast for me.

What's your favorite music genre? Favorite artist? Song?
I love all types of music. My favorites are Alternative Rock, Techno, Reggae, Hip Hop, and New Age
Bob Marley is my all time favorite musician, but he doesn’t sing my favorite song.
At times when I was discouraged, I called my Dad for advice. He then would sing to me, “I get knocked down, but I get up again. Nobody could keep me down.” So whenever I hear that song, I jump up and sing as loud as I am able to. That song is called ‘Tub Thumping Song’. Chumba Wumba sings that song.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (I.e. Chocolate, quiet, music)
It just depends on my mood. Sometimes I like to listen to New Age music. Other times, I would rather hear nothing but my head thinking and the noise my fingers make on the key board.

Night owl or early bird?
I have been known to be a Night Owl. My greatest inspiration comes to me at night.

One food you would never eat?
I hate Brussels sprouts. I like other vegetables, but for some reason Brussels sprouts taste awful to me.

Pet Peeves?
My biggest Pet Peeve is when people don’t say thank you. Other than that, I am pretty accepting.

Skittles or M&Ms?
I love both, but I would rather have M& Ms’ I love chocolate and my initials are MNM.

Favorite Cartoon?
My favorite cartoon growing up is the Flintstones. Yabba Dabba Doo.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be, male or female, doesn't matter and why?
There are two Greek Gods called Eros. I choose to be the younger one also known as Cupid. He is full of love and he has a happy ever after. I wouldn’t mind being either female or male. Although I would not want to be vengeful or have a miserable existence.

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?
I don’t watch sports on TV. I like attending basketball games. My friends and I went to a Kings Game last week. The Kings lost by one point. They were playing The Clippers that night.

How do you react to a bad review?
Overall, I haven’t had too badly of a review. There have been a few comments that saddened me.
I am thin skinned and that is something I am working on.

If you could be a paranormal creature, what would you choose to be?
I like fairies and angels. I would be a combination of them to. I would be a fraiangel. I would look like and angel, but have fairy dust helping people whenever I could.

What is your favorite book that has been made into a movie?
Titanic is my pick. Both the book and movie were suspenseful, sad, and very romantic.

What do you do when you are in-between books?
When I am not immersed in a book, I seem to write more. I travel sometimes to visit friends or explore new places.

Where is your favorite place to read/write?
My favorite place to read is when I am relaxed lying down. I have many spots for writing. I usually bring a journal and pen with me whenever I go. When new ideas pop up, I jot them down. Then I come home and type the work in my computer.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
My book teaches unconditional love.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. Which would it be?
I would jump in the chapter book series The Magical Tree House written by Osborne Mary Pope. I love the adventures that they visit in the past. This book is educational and fun to read.

What is your dream cast for your book?
If my book was to turn into a movie, I hope it is a cartoon. Here goes the voice for my dream cast.. Whoopi Goldberg plays Princess, because she is spunky and full of life. Dolly Parton plays Missy, the magical butterfly. She has words of wisdom. Robin Williams plays Nooney the monkey because he is one of my favorite actors.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
“Where the Side Walk ends” written by Shell Silverstein was my favorite book growing up. I was happy reading the poems and looking at the exciting pictures.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Fireworks sang by Katie Perry would be my theme song. The song to me is telling me never to give up and that is what Princess does. No matter how hard her life got, she never gave up.

What is your favorite quote?
I don’t know who said this, “ The darker the dawn, the brighter the sunset.” At rough spots in my life, thinking and believing that life would get better held me going. I have also said this saying to many people when they are down.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Cockroaches are my kryptonite. I don’t hate many things, but I think cock roaches are disgusting. I freak out whenever I see one.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
“The Best and Worst Luck All Wrapped into One” I have had a few close friends tell me that was how I was. I have had some fantastic things happen to me. I have also had some very scary things occur in my life time as well.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I am embarrassed to say that I like watching the show, “Baggage.” Sometimes it is funny and other times it is a little romantic.

Princess & Missy's Magical Adventures is an excellent children's book that teaches the importance of faith amidst adversity. From it, children learn that they can overcome even the worst of situations as long as they remain positive and believe that they are strong enough to do so. This book is perfect for children/parents who are looking for a sweet story that touches on the issues of grief or any of life's struggles.

Share her excitement when she meets Missy, the magical butterfly who gives Princess the Crystal Heart and asks for Princess' help to accomplish her important work. Alice in Wonderland meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in this delicious, whimsical book.

I picked this book up on New Year's Eve because I had a "Bellyache" after eating too much food.  I could so relate to Peter who was helping in his grandfather's sweet shop and kept sneaking treats.  Before long Peter is not feeling so well and is transported to the whimsical land of the Candonites.  A place where the people look and smell good enough to eat.

I'm sure children ages 6 to 10 will enjoy this book.  It would make a fun read aloud for younger kids and a good read alone for those who are a little older.  It wrapped up a little too quickly for me and I never fully understood why a couple of characters acted like they did but otherwise an enjoyable, tasty read.

Blog Tour: Book Review: Island Sting by Bonnie J Doerr

Island Sting by Bonnie J. Doerr:
The Story: Kenzie didn't expect her first summer in the Florida Keys to be murder. Or cute guys, awesome boats, endangered species, and gun-toting thugs... When city girl Kenzie Ryan moves to a Florida wildlife refuge, she plunges straight into an eco-mystery. Kenzie trades New York streets for Keys pollution cleanup, and now, instead of hailing cabs, she's tracking down a poacher of endangered Key deer. Her new home does have some benefits-mainly Angelo, an island native, who teams up with her to nab the culprit. But will they both survive when the killer turns from stalking deer to hunting humans? Island Sting includes notes on the endangered Florida Key Deer and the National Key Deer Refuge.

Island Sting by Bonnie Doerr is an environmentally friendly middle grade read aimed at children ages 10-12. This is a book about making a difference. When Kenzie rescues a small deer a desire and passion is awoken within her. Kenzie and her friend Angelo gather their friend and do what they can to help protect the endangered Key deer. Cleaning up litter, encouraging tourist to stop feeding the deer and tracking down a poacher make a great adventure story for younger readers.  This book was also educational with references to the environment and wildlife of Big Pine Key.  The last few pages of the book contain facts about the miniature Key deer and measures that have been taken to protect it.

Island Sting is a book I would recommend to kids who are interested in doing something to help the environment and endangered animals. It is a book that could be used in a classroom or homeschooling unit as a springboard to teach a dozen different subjects to students.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Great Wall of Lucy Wu by Wendy Wan-Long Shang

I've got another great interview and giveaway. Welcome to Debut author Wendy Wan-Long Shang.

Wendy Wan-Long Shang is the recipient of a Work-In-Progress Grant from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. The Great Wall of Lucy Wu is her first novel. She lives with her family in the suburbs of Washington D.C.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I already feel as if I live in the future, what with holographic televisions, iPads and movies on-demand through my video game system. (It doesn't help that I'm a "late adapter" and my husband is the last lawyer in America without a cell phone.) I think I'd travel to the past - maybe to Laura Ingalls' time. They were so independent and at the same time, so appreciative of every little thing they had.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
A knife, an encyclopedia and a pack of pencils. If I'm going to be somewhere alone and with no phone or Internet access, I'm turning it into a writer's retreat. (I'm hoping you can write on the backs of palm leaves.)

What is one book everyone should read?
I think everyone should read a Joey Pigza book. I think Jack Gantos does a terrific job of showing what it's like living with ADHD, and reading those books might go a long way to helping a lot of misunderstood kids.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
I already have a superhero name that I share with millions of other women - it's "Mom."

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The ability to fly. And barring that, I like my sister-in-law's desired superpower: the power to have my children listen to me the first time.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I love making ice cream, and this summer, my oldest child and I made Dulce de Leche ice cream. Sooooo good.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Once in a very great while, my family and I trek over to the Krispy Kreme factory and get hot, fresh doughnuts right off the conveyor belt. Mmmmm......

What's your favorite music genre? Favorite artist? Song?
I love all kinds of music, from ancient choral music to classical to pop. One song I always count on to put me in a great mood is "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire. It doesn't hurt that my youngest was born in September!

Night owl, or early bird?
I used to be a night owl, but lately I've been an early bird. I get up, exercise, walk the dog and then come home and wake up everyone else.

Pet Peeves?
People who throw their cigarette butts out the car window. It's like, what? the whole earth is your ashtray?

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&M's.

Favorite Cartoon?
My favorite cartoon of all time is an old Warner Brothers one called "Feed the Kitty." It's about a big, burly bulldog named Marc Antony who finds a little kitten and tries to hide it from his owner. The bulldog looks like such a tough guy, and he becomes a totally softie for this kitten. His expressions slay me every time.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be, male or female, doesn't matter and why?
I think it would be fun to be Eros/Cupid, shooting people with arrows and making them fall in love. But I'd want arrows not just for romantic love, but also for brotherly love, love for one's fellow man. That would solve a lot of problems!

How do you react to a bad review?
I look up reviews of some of my favorite, all-time books, and then I see that they also have tough reviews. It's a good reminder that even the most well-loved books have their critics.

What do you do when you are in-between books?
I haven't felt in-between books since I started writing this one. I think once you turn on that story brain, it's hard to turn off!

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
For every person who thought they were going to get something perfect, and got something entirely different, this book is for you!

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
I'd love to live in the world of The Phantom Tollbooth for a while. Wouldn't that be a riot? I've always wondered what some of that food tastes like.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
For my main character, Lucy, I would choose "Tumbthumping" by Chumbawamba, for the anthem, "I get knocked down, but I get up again. You're never gonna keep me down." It's particularly applicable to a scene in the book - which you'll have to read to find out!

What great answers!  Thank you Wendy!

Blog Tour: Book Giveaway: Dear Sparkle by Sparkle the Cat

About the Author:
Sparkle is an award-winning author, blogger, advice columnist and supermodel. She is also a cat – a ruddy Somali of champion lineage, in fact, whose father, GC Tajhara’s Miles Davis, was twice on the cover of Cat Fancy. Sparkle’s first book, Dear Sparkle: Advice from One Cat to Another, won the Wild Card category at the 2007 Hollywood Book Festival and honorable mentions in several other contests. She also recently came home with the Pettie Award — the pet blogging equivalent of an Oscar — for Best Cat Blog. Sparkle lives in Los Angeles with two humans, two feline roommates (both rescue cats), and (unfortunately) a dog.

Dear Sparkle: Cat-to-Cat Advice from the World’s Foremost Feline Columnist is her second book.

Face it, kitties, your humans can’t help you untangle your problems — especially when they’re usually the ones driving you crazy! But never fear, the world’s foremost feline authority, Sparkle the Cat, is here to solve all of your kitty conundrums. With 70 Q&As, “Sparkle Says” sidebars, and full-color photos throughout, this guide is definitely NOT your usual human-written cat book.

Whether you’re a confused kitty who doesn’t understand why you’re supposed to stay off the couch, a cat who’s furious because the new puppy ate your catnip stash, or a freaked-out feral who wants to return to the wild, Sparkle has the wise — and often hilarious — answers for your woes. And who knows? Humans who read it (with your permission, of course) may even learn something new about the way we behave.
