Book Giveaway & Author Interview: Footprints in the Sand by Rebekah Hatcher

Welcome to Author Rebekah Hatcher:

As far back as I can remember I have read every book I could get my hands on. I guess that it is only natural that I wanted to be a writer as well. I am sure that I drove my parents crazy, reading or writing using the light from my flashlight into the wee hours of the morning. It would be foolish to think that they didn't know exactly what I was doing. As I am now a published author I can gladly say that their patience has paid off!
My husband, Don, has also been a large supporter of my writing, whether it be long periods of shutting myself away to work on an idea or writing the details to a dream that I had before I forgot it all in hopes that it would evolve into a novel. It took me nearly five years to complete my first book and he has been there throughout, always ready for me to bounce ideas off of!
Our children, Austin, Lauren, and even little Allison are always interested in my writing or in what stage of publishing I am in. I think they are just as excited about this as I am! They are each so precious to me and I thank God everyday for my family.
We love the small town life here in "Our Neck of the Woods", Texas. My husband and I own an Air Conditioning company so when I am not writing I can usually be found there, answering phones, and filing paperwork. We also enjoy traveling, playing golf and going to the movies.

Interview:

1. If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
This is actually a hard question because there are so many time periods I would have loved to live in. I would have to say I would have loved to be a wealthy (as long as we are dreaming, why not?) duchess or countess during 19th century England. I love all the floofy dresses and decorum and friviloty that they had back then. I would have loved to go to the theater or to a coming out ball or to the English countryside, or to take a holiday in Bath.

2. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Footprints in the Sand takes you on an adventure across the globe with twists and turns that make it hard to put the book down.

3. How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
My husband bought my first book. My publisher called me and told me that they had it available through their web site and my husband was there when I was on the phone with them. He had it ordered within minutes. We were both so excited! It meant a lot to me that he was the first one to purchase a copy.... he even paid retail!!

4.What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Write down everything. The best stories are the ones that come from real life experiences. You never know when a dream you had last night could turn into a best-seller!

5. Favorite Candy?
I have two.... one that is nostalgic: My grandma lived in Chalmette, Louisianna and when I was a little girl I would go visit her and she would always have a package of Choward's Violets waiting for me. Before I would leave to go home she would take me to the K&B Drug Store and buy me a whole box (24 packages) to bring home. To this day I still think about that when I smell violets. I recently ordered some online and I cried when I opened the box thinking about my grandmother, who passed eight years ago.
My second favorite is one that I get at the movies everytime we go... Sour Punch Straws. Doesn't matter what flavor, I love them!!

6.What do you do in your free time?
What free time? Just Joking, my family loves to travel, we spend time with friends and our extended family. We all get together at our house most weekends which means that at any given time we will have about 25-30 people at our house. I love the chaos of it! We also fish and play golf and our favorite thing to do is go to the movies. My personal favorite thing to do is read. As many books as I can get my hands on!

7. If you could have a signed copy of any novel, which would it be and why?
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, not only is it one of my all time favorites, but a signed copy would be worth a fortune!

8. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
My daughter says that my superpower should be controlling everything....I'm sure she means that in the nicest way possible, but if I could choose I would say super speed.... just think how many novels I could write if I wrote 1000 words per minute!!

9. When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
A History Teacher. I LOVE History and everything about it. I would have wanted to be the "cool" teacher though, not the crabby ones that gave too much homework!

10.  What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
Anne of Green Gables. I love the book and the movies, I even went to Green Gables in Prince Edward Island when I was a little girl. I am sharing that series with my eight year old daughter right now and she loves it too!

11. If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Waking up early. I hate to have to get up early. I am grumpy for at least an hour and I can't eat breakfast early because it makes me sick to my stomach. This super hero could not fight crime before 7am!

12. Favorite places to travel?
Disney World is on the top five list. My husband and I went to Ireland two years ago and I would love to go back. It was amazing. We also like to go to Mexico. The place that I would like to go to most would be Italy, my mom went and said it was incredible. I would like to see where my mom's family is from and eat LOTS of Italian food!!

13. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have several books that I've started but haven't finished...one day I will. I also have a contract with my publisher to write the sequel to Footprints in the Sand. It will be called Eye of the Storm. I am about half way finished with it so I will keep you posted on when to expect it published.

14.  How did you know you should become an author?
I've always liked to write and jot down ideas. My husband really encouraged me to finish this book and get it turned in to a publisher. Between him and my other family and friends they were all the moral support I needed to become an Author.

15. What is one book everyone should read?
Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain - It is an American Classic

Footprints in the Sand:

Callie Andrews is content with her life, until she gets a phone call telling her that her twin brother is in an Iraqi prison. When Mark Wilson contacts her and tells her that his father has also been taken captive, her organized life is suddenly turned upside down. As they uncover more information, they soon realize that the company their family members worked for is not what it appeared, and the kidnappings may not have been as random as they seemed. Callie and Mark's own lives will soon be in danger as they race to rescue their loved ones. As Callie and Mark travel around the world, staying one step ahead of the men trying to keep them from discovering the truth, they find that they may have been brought into one another's lives for an even larger purpose. Can Mark's faith inspire Callie to turn back to God after spending so long running from Him? Can Callie's beauty and love help Mark heal from the heartbreak of losing his fiancĂ© and learn to open himself up once again? Their journey brings up questions of love and faith for each of them as they make Footprints in the Sand.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: How to Improve Your Life by Raymond Scudder

Welcome to Author Ray Scudder.

Bio:

Improvement of himself and others has been a driving force in the life and career of RAYMOND H. SCUDDER (Ray). Born and raised in a very poor neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, he went on to enjoy a distinguished forty-five-year career as a human resources and quality improvement professional. A graduate of the University of Southern California with a BS Degree in Public Administration, he is a Six Sigma certified process improvement specialist. Six Sigma is a quality improvement methodology used in business that seeks to achieve near perfect quality levels of no more than three errors per one million transactions. Ray served as director of human resources for one of the largest medical centers in the state of Oregon and then as vice president of human resources and quality management for one of the largest medical centers in the state of Washington. Ray says he loved working in the medical field because the people in it are so dedicated to helping others. In 1994 he founded Human Resources Consulting & Training which provided consulting and employee training programs to over 30 hospitals in the Pacific Northwest and served as its president until retiring in 2006. He and his wife, Jan, live in Lake Stevens, Washington. They have three daughters, three granddaughters, and a newly arrived first grandson. HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE is his first book, and Ray says probably his last.

http://www.howtoimproveyourlife.net/

Interview:

1. What is the one book everyone should read?

America: The Last Best Hope Volumes I & II by William J. Bennett. Candidly, my high school and college history classes were pretty boring. This book taught me so much more about our history and gave me a real appreciation for what our forefathers endured and the things they did to make this such a great country.

2. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

I would choose having Ultimate Knowledge about everything - curing diseases, stopping and avoiding wars, other life in the universe, God and an afterlife, etc. etc.

3. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

The book contains a life-changing improvement process you can easily follow to take control of your life and achieve whatever you want to achieve.

4. What inspired you to become a writer?

I never did aspire to become a writer and this will probably be my first and last book. I have spent my life trying to improve myself and help others improve. I wanted to leave something behind that would help people and especially my grandchildren get what they want out of life. A book seemed like a good way to do it.

5. What is your favorite quote?

There are a dozen great quotes in my book but the one I like the most is How wonderful is it that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world? - Anne Frank

6. What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?

My dear departed grandmother always used to say to me "Can't never did anything".

7. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was six years old I was on the Art Linkletter radio show and he asked me the same question. I told him I wanted to be a post office clerk like my dad because he made lots of money. I didn't understand why the audience laughed at me but I didn't care because Mr. Linkletter gave me a model airplane.

8. Nickname?

My nickname when I was growing up was "Butch" but back then it meant tough guy. It has a little different connotation today so I don't use it anymore.

9. In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?

Without a doubt it would be Stephen Hawking author of A Brief History of Time. Although his books are not easy reading, this man is the most genius intellect in the world today. It would be an honor to bring him coffee and just sit with and take notes for him.

10. What's your favorite weather?

I live about 30 miles north of Seattle, Washington and my favorite weather is any day when it doesn't rain!

Summary:

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE is a must-read for anyone who wants to improve their life but doesn’t know where or how to begin. The book provides a life-changing Improvement Process - a simple 6-step method anyone can use to take control of their life and achieve whatever they want. Combining traditional self improvement techniques with modern quality improvement principles, the author provides a compelling case for using this Improvement Process. The book offers a wealth of improvement tips and expert advice on how to:
• live a healthy life
• build and strengthen your relationships
• boost your career
• achieve personal financial success
• make internal changes that maximize your ability to accomplish whatever you want to do

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Death Whispers & The Pearl Savage by Tamara Rose Blodgett

Welcome to Author Tamara Rose Blodgett.

Bio:
Tamara Rose Blodgett is a “thinking-out-of-the box” paranormal enthusiast who believes there's a 95% chance zombies do not exist; but loves to write as if they do. I'm from Alaska and have worked as an online journalist in the past. I enjoyed writing, Death Whispers, and am hard at work on book two, Death Speaks, (pub. Aug. 2011). My paranormal romance, The Pearl Savage, published on June 15. In my spare time I'm a [reluctant] serial-re-modeler, project-slave and big time, in-my-pants reader (surprise!). I do a great deal of day-dreaming about impossible scenarios and events, writing books to capture them in stories for you~ Side note: Gnomes should be exterminated.
Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Absolutely the past! There are so many fascinating eras to choose from...

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Albert Einstein and my mom. ( I know they're gone...but that's what I want anyway ;)

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Wonderbar, Kindle (with unlimited battery, of course), and a hatchet( remember how handy that was in Paulsen's book?)

What is one book everyone should read?
Lone Survivor.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Healing.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Bubblegum.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Elanor Roosevelt.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Peanut butter toast (w/butter!).

One food you would never eat?
Beets...they are the GROSSEST.

Pet Peeves?
Icky feet.

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&M's with peanuts.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
“Death Whispers” is a book that has a unique premise, lots of action and dialogue that is not contrived; reading naturally.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
“The Pearl Savage,” ( a YA paranormal romance) was published on June 15 and the sequel to DW, “Death Speaks,” will be published on August 15. My “loose” goal is to publish a book every two months through the end of 2011.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
It was the thing I felt most compelled to do since I was a teen. I always had stories ricocheting around in my head like a pinball!

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
By far, my readers loving the book! Without their feedback, it would mean so much less. It's thrilling to have a reader say they spent their time being entertained by something you made up! I appreciate each and every one of them!

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
I want to be in Anita Blake's world ( Laurell K. Hamilton series).

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
The Chronicles of Narnia.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Sully Erna (Sinner's Prayer)

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Edit. It is so critical to have your novel formatted correctly and free of typos. They will still slip in but try to eradicate those! Less or none is the goal, absolutely.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Italy sounds completely cool! But, I'd have to learn Italian!

What is your favorite Quote?
"Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle."

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
A journalist. Which I was for about four years. It was a terrific job. One that prepared me for writing fiction. That said, a writer can never have enough preparation or practice!

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Stephen King. He's my all-time inspiration.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I can't. Maybe people that know me can! :D

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
Actually, they're all crazy. I've been told my ideas are unique and it's only after I've written them into a book that they become cohesive and make “sense” to the reader. I am like some authors where they put two ideas together that come at separate times but eventually combine into a story. All my stories started out with one idea. Then something else would come along; they'd collide and a new story was born.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Keep on, keeping on. My husband has encouraged my tenacious tendencies. (Maybe I'm overstating it...I probably didn't need a lot of encouraging. Huh.)

Hidden talent?
I am an okay finish carpenter.

Favorite Food?
Steak (rib eye).

Favorite Candy?
This is so weird, but I don't like candy.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
J.R. Ward's new release, Laurell K. Hamilton's and Charlaine Harris'. I also just heard that Tess Gerritsen just released her new one as well. (She can't write a bad book.)

What was your favorite children's book?
I ADORED the first book in the trilogy for The Hunger Games. Wow...just, wow!

Nickname?
* Sighs *, Tami.

How do you react to a bad review?
Honestly...I feel kind of defensive. Once I calm down ( I shouldn't admit that but...it's the truth!) I look to see if there is an effective criticism I can apply to my work, fix or use in the next book. Sometimes, I've seen negative reviews that don't offer anything for the author to gain or use? How is that helpful? In my case, I really appreciate a little constructive criticism and have used it to improve my work for my reader(s). I am motivated by my reader receiving the best work I am capable of.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Super-boring: I'd pay off debt...then, I'd buy something cool for my husband!

Which authors have influence you most how?
Stephen King definitely influenced me most. His works taught me the importance of tight and natural dialogue and making the ordinary seem edgy. Comedic dialogue was well-done by King and I have used it in my own work and had fun doing it!

What do you do in your free time?
I LOVE to read...always have.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
I wake up and “come to myself,” for about five minutes. Get up, fix coffee and breakfast, get on my computer and check all my social networking sites including my blog and goodreads, run off to the gym to abuse myself in the hopes of not getting saddle bags or “bat-wings.” I return home, do laundry, dishes, think about cleaning (huh), and get started writing after lunchtime for three hours. Start supper at four o'clock, eat with the Fam at 5-ish, go on my computer and hit whatever I missed in the AM. Some days when it's sunny, I will work in my yard, which I love. On the weekend I make pancakes for the boys and hang out with the Fam or my crazy friends by the fire pit.

What's your favorite season/weather?
I love Indian summer from when I was a kid and lived in Seattle. Now that I live in Alaska, I totally prefer summer. The crazy amount of daylight that we receive in AK is wonderful during that season.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?
I'll answer that Amanda Hocking put the seed in my head about “going Indie.” I was already an author before I caught wind of her tremendous success.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I am unfortunately not embarrassed by things I should be. If I dig it, I watch/read whatever. I absolutely LOVE International House Hunters. We haven't had TV for about 4 years now and when I visit my folks, I am totally glued to their TV [for that show] whenever it's on!

Favorite places to travel?
I'd love to someday visit Europe, especially Norway.

Favorite music?
I have so many but mainly I like alternative or “head-banger” rock. I am really enjoying all the contemporary music that my son's have introduced me to. My third son is always sending me you tube links!

Blog Tour: Guest Post - Don't Stop Now by Julie Halpern

Welcome to Author Julie Halpern.

Bio:

A native to the Chicago suburbs, I have been a school librarian for more than ten years (old much?). I live with my sweetheart husband, illustrator Matthew Cordell, and our gloriously large Siamese cat, Tobin. In my spare time I like to read, watch TV, play Sims 2, and travel.

Guest Post: When I'm Not Writing:

I actually spend a lot of time not writing, probably more than I should as a writer. Thing is, I am a firm believer that living life makes for excellent inspiration. Plus, I don’t exactly have the time to write every minute of the day. I recently quit my job as a school librarian, a job I’ve done proudly for the last ten years. Part of me left to explore living life as an author, but that certainly wasn’t the financially sensible part. The bigger part of me left work to be home with my young daughter. Perhaps I will return to school librarianing one day, either when my daughter is in school or I am broke. Whichever comes first.
So how do I spend my time when I’m not making food, playing at the park, and picking up Polly Pockets? I do one of three things: I waste my time on the internet, I waste my time watching TV, or I waste my time playing computer games. It’s sad that I feel doing any of these are wastes of time because, really, I can only do any of them for less than two hours a day. Some people watch TV for hours and hours at night. Or sit in front of a computer for eight hours on a weekend playing The Sims. That used to be me. Now I’m lucky if I get in one TV show per night before crashing out or an hour of Sims Medieval during my daughter’s nap. So when do I write? Good question. Sometimes it’s in the morning before my daughter wakes up, and sometimes it’s stuffed in during her nap (both times very stressful, since I don’t know when she’ll wake). When it’s important, flowing, paid for writing, my husband (a children’s book author and illustrator) and I have to make an elaborate schedule involving babysitters and trade-offs. In those times, my Sims have to live their pretend lives without me. My real life is just a tad too busy.

Don't Stop Now
On the first day of Lillian’s summer-before-college, she gets a message on her cell from her sort-of friend, Penny. Not only has Penny faked her own kidnapping, but Lil is the only one who figures it out. She knows that Penny’s home life has been rough, and that her boyfriend may be abusive. Soon, Penny’s family, the local police, and even the FBI are grilling Lil, and she decides to head out to Oregon, where Penny has mentioned an acquaintance. And who better to road-trip across the country with than Lil’s BFF, Josh. But here’s the thing: Lil loves Josh. And Josh doesn’t want to “ruin” their amazing friendship.

Josh has a car and his dad’s credit card. Lil has her cellphone and a hunch about where Penny is hiding. There’s something else she needs to find: Are she and Josh meant to be together?
