Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Downward Dog, Upward Fog by Meryl Davids Landau

Welcome to Author Meryl Davids Landau.

This is Meryl's fiction debut. Previously, she wrote articles for numerous national magazines, including O, the Oprah magazine, Reader's Digest, Glamour, More, Prevention, U.S. News & World Report, Parade, Self, Redbook, and Whole Living. Her magazine writing has won several awards, and was a finalist for a prestigious National Magazine Award.

INTERVIEW
What was your favorite book when you were a child?
I loved The Carrot Seed, by Ruth Krauss, where a little boy plants the carrot seed and knows—despite all the doubters around him—that it will grow into a carrot, which of course it does in the end. Even as a young child I understood that believing in yourself is a powerful thing.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Where else can you get both fun chick lit and an uplifting, spiritually-inspiring (non-religious) read?

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published?
The best part by far is hearing from readers who said Downward Dog, Upward Fog motivated them to take up yoga or meditation or to rededicate themselves to their lapsed spiritual practices. I love the idea that a light, easy read can also carry a deep meaning that connects people to their higher selves without being preachy.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Mint chocolate chip. But I adore almost any flavor. Ice cream is my biggest weakness (or, as I prefer to think of it, my biggest pleasure). It's no coincidence that the main character in my novel works as a special-events manager at an ice cream manufacturer called Favored-Flavors. That was always one of my dream jobs!

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Readers routinely ask me if Lorna Crawford is me. From the standpoint that I'm not a single woman with a hot boyfriend, a wretched mother and a job in an ice cream company, she isn't. But the book sprang from a question I heard another author answer on TV about how she came up with her book: She said, "I asked myself, where are the novels for women like me." Like Lorna, I'm a person who tries to bring more spiritual awakening and serenity into my daily life—and like Lorna, I frequently don't succeed.

What's your favorite season/weather?
My favorite season is spring, but if the choice were only between winter and summer, I'd take summer any day--which is why I left the Northeast and moved to South Florida! Once the sun goes behind the clouds, all I can think about is climbing into bed and never getting out!

What is your favorite quote?
It's one I actually included in my novel. (My main character reads self-help books in addition to attempting yoga and attempting meditation and a few lines from those book are in my novel. In The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle writes, "Surrender to the grief. Embrace it. Then see how the miracle of surrender transmutes deep suffering into deep peace." Anytime I try to resist something I don't like, I make it worse, but when I accept it (which doesn't mean I have to like it), the pain and disappointment immediately go away—and often, so, too, does the problem.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
Now that my teenage daughter starts her school later, I luxuriously get to sleep in till 7:30 or even 8 o'clock! I try to do a little yoga or meditation in the morning; sometimes it's just a few minutes. After breakfast and driving my daughter to school, I enter my home office to work on magazine article assignments. (I've been a magazine writer for more than 20 years—the novel came about because after so many years of reporting facts I thought it would be fun to make stuff up!) I write mostly about healthy living for Reader's Digest, Whole Living, the Oprah magazine, Prevention, and other publications. After lunch—more often than I would like something grabbed quickly in the kitchen and hauled into the office--I work on publicity for my book, which includes Facebook, Twitter, blogging for the Huffington Post, and writing guest posts like this one. At some point I try to get some fresh air, even if it's just a few minutes standing by the beautiful lake behind my house. Finally, I spend a little time working on the sequel toDownward Dog, Upward Fog. (I'm as eager as my readers to see what happens to Lorna next!) Once dinner is finished, I go on Goodreads, where I moderate the Yoga Folks book group; read something for pleasure; and hang out with my family. Occasionally I get out to a yoga class, but that doesn't happen as often as I would like.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I'm a sucker for romantic comedies, especially those made from great novels. I heard Alison Winn Scotch's Time of My Life is becoming a movie. I have no idea when it will be coming out but I'll be first on line. I loved that novel!

Write a Haiku about your book.
How fun!

Lorna wants inner peace
Yoga? Breathing? Self-help books?
Just embrace "what is."

Spontaneity or Planning Ahead?
I like to decide what to do on weekends when I wake up Saturday morning. I've a friend who schedules six months out—which is why I hardly see her! My more spontaneous nature is probably why I like magazine work so much: the deadlines force me to focus but they're not so far out, the way a book is, that I can delay it.

Beach or Pool?
Beach for feeling the sand in my feet and the breeze in my hair, and watching the moon rise over the ocean—I live in South Florida, after all. But for swimming, I'm a pool girl. Feeling fish graze my legs gives me the willies.

PC or Mac?
I've been a Mac girl since before even the iMac days. I've always loved the intuitive ease of use—although my college-student, computer-engineering son says I'm paying a big premium for that enjoyment. And I totally adore my iPhone!

Text or Talk?
Talk, although my kids are getting me in the habit of texting (they won't answer the phone if I call!), and I'm starting to see the value. It's much more efficient to send brief text than to have to socialize at the start of each call.

Skittles or M&Ms?
Chocolate beats any other candy every time.

Downward Dog, Upward Fog
Lorna Crawford has a great boyfriend, longtime friends, and a well-paying job as special- events coordinator at a premium ice-cream manufacturer. But, out of sorts and filled with self-doubt, the 33 year old soon realizes that what she really wants is to stay on the spiritual path she keeps diving off of. Lorna jump-starts her efforts at a silent yoga retreat. But after returning from the mountain, she quickly loses her connection in the face of scheming coworkers, judgmental girlfriends, and, especially, her overly critical mother. Lorna also wrestles over her future with her boyfriend, a hot guy who takes her to the hottest places, but who can’t discern a meditation cushion from a toad stool. Reading spiritual books and visiting a channeler and energy healer move Lorna forward, but her confusion remains. Lorna’s seeking is put to the ultimate test when personal tragedy strikes. Will she come to truly understand that living spiritually has little to do with how you pretzel yourself on the yoga mat (although she gets plenty good at that), and everything to do with embracing the twists in everyday life?

Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway: Having Fun While Saving Money by Janiera Eldridge

Welcome to Author Janiera Eldridge.
I'm 20 years old and not always sure where I want to go in life all I know is that I love to write! I've worked as a freelance writer for the past 2 years which mixes what I love to do with something I have to do, work! I write entertainment news when I'm not reading or studying at Entertainmentparadise.net.
Even though my first book is non-fiction my next book will be fiction. There are a lot of crazy characters in my head just dying to get out! I'm a reading and movie addict and nothing makes me happier than a good book or movie (except for the love of my wonderful family). I'm currently pursuing a business management degree although my dreams to make a career writing will never fade.

Interview Questions:
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
It gives you new and improved ways to have fun without breaking the bank.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I love the show "American Horror Story" it is so edgy, sexy and disturbing. However, it's so edgy I don't go around telling people I watch it or they might think there is something wrong with me . If you have ever seen this show, you understand.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
The world of Twilight. I love the twilight series and who wouldn't want two gorgeous guys fighting over them?
Although I would probably choose Jacob over Edward.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don't let anyone or anything stop you from telling your story, don't let anything stop you from writing what it is in your heart.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Spending a few hours with a hot cup of coffee and new book. I could shut the world out and get lost for hours in a good book. Isn't that the beauty of reading?

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
They may seem like popular choices but I really do love these authors. Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Stephanie Meyer, J.K. Rowling.

Harry Potter or Twilight?
Both! I never understood why there had to be a big rivalry anyways. I love both stories for their originality and uniqueness. There both my favorite book series of all times. The movies are good in both series but they could never touch me like the books.

Horror or Romance?
Horror wins hands down! A good horror novel (such as one written by Stephen King) asks us to question what we know as normal. I loved being challenged and surprised while I read and horror delivers that the best.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Don't let anyone else steal your shine, their only trying to do that because they don't have their own. Celebrate your moments of accomplishment no matter what!

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I really, really enjoy the new horror and fairy tale genre. So my next book will definitely be a fiction story blending the two genres together to make something really exciting!

Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway: A Ripple in Time by Julia Hughes

A Ripple in Time by Julia Hughes

'A Ripple in Time' centres around the legend of Excalibur and imagines the mysterious Stonehenge as a portal in time. Virgin blood and virginity are highly prized in the old tales, though as my character Wren comments - 'why does it always have to be virgin's blood ... what's the difference?' maybe for its pureness? Who knows. But when you're dealing in magical artefacts and attempting to turn back time, it's best not to take risks.

Interview with Author Julia Hughes
What is one book everyone should read?
Harper Lee’s classic “To Kill A Mockingbird” - Not only a beautiful story, but without preaching her characters reflect conflicts and dilemmas that still apply today: A shining example of how being the minority of one, doesn’t mean you’re wrong - the sheriff who doesn’t approve of what Finch is doing, but defends his right to defend Tom Robinson, and Scout of course, learning that battles can’t always be fought with fists, and sometimes your worst enemies will be your own neighbours and friends. Not to mention Dill, (Truman Capote) ghostly Bo Radley, the proud but dirt poor Cunninghams - they are all so vivid, and perfectly drawn. This is the book I and many others would love to have written, but never will be able to copy Harper Lee’s deftness and lightness of touch - the backdrop of Maycomb county too - genteel poverty and the politics of a small town where everyone is related or has known each other for generations. If any aspiring author ever wants an example of ‘show don’t tell’ this book is it.

Pet Peeves?
Too many to mention. In the literary world, misuse of the word unique. It is unique. It cannot be qualified. Once you qualify it, it is no longer unique. Tongue in cheek: unless it’s very unique of course... (not)!

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Remember the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Get that first chapter written!

Night owl, or early bird?
I burn the candle at both ends. Around sixish just after walking the dogs and before making dinner, I like to switch off and just read, or attempt the crossword.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
Has to be Narnia. Ever since reading the Silver Chair, I’ve fantasised about eating living jewels. And to sail on the Dawn Treader would be amazing.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
I’ve written for my own enjoyment, but it’s more pleasure to share.

What is your favorite Quote?
‘No-one’s dead - and no-one’s dying.’ It’s my quote. It reminds me that things might seem bad - but so long as you have health and hope, you can make a better day tomorrow. Decisions and events might seem final, but while you got breath in your body you can find a way round. Sometimes I mutter it fifty times a day, especially when my two sons manage to lose their car keys eighty miles away from home, run out of gas a couple of hundred miles away from home, or miss their flight a few thousand miles away from home. And they wonder why I sometimes want to lock them in the basement!

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Read between the lines; don’t take things at face value.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I once met Doctor Who, and I’ve got the photo to prove it!

Favorite quote from a movie?
Easy - “The Italian Job” - “You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off” - classic over-enthusiasm from a bunch of amateurs!

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Wren Prenderson is a little like me - he can get caught up in his own world & comes up with crazy ideas dragging other people into his schemes by means fair or foul. Other people might call it bribery or blackmail. I call it getting people to see things from my point of view. (only joking).

Author Interview & Prize Pack Giveaway: Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb by MJA Ware

Welcome to Author M.J.A. Ware
MJ A. Ware, known as M.J. to his friends, lives in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains with his wife and two daughters.  He wrote Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb because he felt there was a need for a zombie book with a broader appeal than just hard-core horror fans. A book that would not only appeal to both adults and teens, but would be teen safe. When not writing about aliens, monsters and ghosts, he runs a company where he designs award winning video arcades. He’s currently polishing his latest novel, Girls Bite, a paranormal vampire story told from a guy's perspective.

Interview:
Favorite places to travel?
Being on the West Coast (of the US) it’s a fairly short flight to Hawaii, which is nice when my wife and I just want to get away by ourselves. But, my favorite trips are those with the family camping up in the Northern California Sierras, which incidentally is where my novel takes place.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I have a secret soft spot for paranormal romance novels: Twilight , Hunger Games, the tamer stuff by Meg Cabot. I’m even working on my own para-romance: Girls Bite.

Night owl, or early bird?
I normally do most of my writing after midnight, though that’s due to my schedule.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
I own my own small business, so I work a lot. I try to sleep in until eight or even nine am. Then I normally have a couple hours worth of emails, which takes three or four hours because I usually have at least one little one in my lap (trying to help me type).
After that I’m off to my factory until five or six. Evenings are set aside for time with the wife and kids. Once they’re asleep, I answer any high priority e-mails, maybe conference with an overseas supplier.
With a little luck I can get to writing around eleven, sometimes later. As long as I have a few brain cells still awake, I write or revise for a few hours. Then take a book or my Kindle to bed and read until I can’t keep my eyes open.

Which authors have influence you most how?
Of course the well known names like Lewis, Dahl, Poe, Bradbury. But many people are surprised when I say, Meg Cabot. Her Ally Finkle’s Rules for Girls series was like a revelation to me. It turned me on to other writers like, Judy Blume and also inspired me to start writing in the first person.

What was your favorite children's book?
I still read Kidlit almost exclusively, and I can’t narrow it down to just one favorite. Though, one of the leading contenders would be Danny Champion of the World. I loved it as a kid, but now I really identify with Danny’s dad, the flawed but loving father.

How do you react to a bad review?
I turn to GoodReads and read some of the terrible reviews people give the likes of Dickens, Bradbury, and Austen in hopes of realizing everyone gets those zingers. Still, I often end up sulking for the day. Then, after the kids go down, I make peanut butter cookies and try to keep from eating them all.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Getting reviews from kids; especially when they say that they don’t normally like to read books--that’s why I write: to keep kids reading as they go into those tween and teen years. I believe teen readers turn into adult readers, even if they don't rediscover reading until much later in life.

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
You mean besides fighting off zombies with Super Soakers?
I have this wild idea that keeps popping up in my head about kids that sneak into Disneyland’s Matterhorn to steal and reanimate Walt’s head as part of a plan to save Mickey (if you don’t know, there’s a great urban legend that Walt Disney’s head is preserved, frozen in the Matterhorn, of all places).

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
There’s always some bit of me in my male MC’s. The beta readers for SZJMB commented that they liked Nathan (the MC) in spite of his snarky attitude. I was like, what snarky attitude? But upon reflection it turned out I just didn’t see it; it was one of those personality traits I’d learned to ignore in myself (and in my MC). After that, I focused on turning up Nate’s snarkiness and toning-down my own.

What is your favorite Quote?
“A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.” ― C.S. Lewis

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
If you think you’ve a good writer, you probably aren’t (I know that from personal experience). Read and write until you’ve been doing it so long you have no idea if you’re any good at all—then you might be getting there.

Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb:

When life gives you lemons, kill zombies -- turns out lemon juice neutralizes the undead.
After a failed attempt at running away, best friends Nathan and Misty return home expecting to face angry parents. Instead, they discover the military has destroyed the bridges out of their rural town and everyone's fled--except a small horde of the living dead. The stress of flesh-eating zombies may be more than their already strained relationship can handle.
Even with the help of the town geek and lemonade-powered Super-Soakers, there's not enough time to squeeze their way out of this sticky mess. Unless the trio eradicates the zombie infestation, while avoiding the deadly zombie snot, the military will blow the town, and them, to pulp.Their only shot is something with a lot more punch. Something like the Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb. But even if their friendship survives, there's another problem: Someone has to lure the undead into the trap.

FOR REVIEW:
Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler & Maira Kalman

I'm telling you why we broke up, Ed. I'm writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened.

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

At the age of sixteen, teens must choose the faction to which they will devote their lives. On her Choosing Day, Beatrice renames herself Tris, rejects her family's group, and chooses another faction. After surviving a brutal initiation, Tris finds romance with a super-hot boy, but also discovers unrest and growing conflict in their seemingly "perfect society." The False Princess by Eilis O'Neal

Princess and heir to the throne of Thorvaldor, Nalia's led a privileged life at court. But everything changes when it's revealed, just after her sixteenth birthday, that she is a false princess, a stand-in for the real Nalia, who has been hidden away for her protection. Cast out with little more than the clothes on her back, the girl now called Sinda must leave behind the city of Vivaskari, her best friend, Keirnan, and the only life she's ever known.

Sinda is sent to live with her only surviving relative, an aunt who is a dyer in a distant village. She is a cold, scornful woman with little patience for her newfound niece, and Sinda proves inept at even the simplest tasks. But when Sinda discovers that magic runs through her veins - long-suppressed, dangerous magic that she must learn to control - she realizes that she can never learn to be a simple village girl.

Returning to Vivaskari for answers, Sinda finds her purpose as a wizard scribe, rediscovers the boy who saw her all along, and uncovers a secret that could change the course of Thorvaldor's history, forever.

A dazzling first novel, The False Princess is an engrossing fantasy full of mystery, action, and romance.

In Too Deep by Amanda Grace

I never meant for anyone to get hurt. All I wanted to do that night was make a play for Carter Wellesley. His heartless rejection was mortifying, but people got the wrong idea when they saw me leaving his bedroom, crying. That’s how rumors of rape started.

Now girls at school are pouring out their sympathy to me. Guys too. But not everyone’s on my side. The school has become a war zone and the threats are getting scary. What began as poetic justice has morphed into something bigger—forcing me to make a terrible choice.a
