Giveaway: $5 Amazon Gift Card: Submit an Interview Question to Enter

I try to keep my interviews light and fun as well as short because those are the kind of interviews I actually read.

Here is the list of questions I typically use when interviewing an author:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
What is one book everyone should read?
What is the last book you read?
What is the last movie you saw?
If you were a superhero what would your name be?
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
When you were 12 years old what did you want to be when you grew up?
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Which fictional character would you most like to meet?
What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
How many books do you read a week/month?
What's your favorite music genre? Favorite artist? Song?
Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
Night owl, or early bird?
One food you would never eat?

After doing more than a dozen interviews with those questions I figure it is time to add some new ones.

What kinds of questions would you like asked?
Do you have a fun interview question I can add to my list?

Followers who submit at least 1 question will be entered to win a $5 electronic gift card from Amazon.com.

Interview & Giveaway: Beyond the Rapids by Evelyn Puerto

Welcome to author Evelyn Puerto!

Biography Info:

Evelyn Puerto left a career in health care planning to serve as a missionary for seven years in Russia. During those years, she travelled several times to Ukraine, where she met and was inspired by the Brynza family. She and her husband live in St. Louis, MO. Evelyn is the author of an inspiration new book, Beyond the Rapids.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Because of my love of history, I’d definitely want to go to the past. Do I get to make several stops? There are so many events I’d want to witness I can easily come up with a long list: the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Lewis and Clark seeing the Pacific Ocean for the first time, and Jesus preaching the Sermon on the Mount to start with.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would want to be able to fly, so I could go to all the places I’d like to visit.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Anything with chocolate, the bigger the chunks the better

Which fictional character would you most like to meet?
Lord Peter Wimsey, of Dorothy Sayers’ detective novels. He was so competent at everything he did, yet solved his crimes with unfailing politeness to everyone.

How many books do you read a week/month?
Usually 2-4 a week. This week I read a biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Easy Money by Dick Francis, and the second book of the City of Ember series.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
Quiet definitely helps, but what I really need are the will power and discipline to just start typing to get past thinking about the blank computer screen mirroring my mind gone blank. Once my fingers start moving, the words start to flow, but getting started is the hard part.

One food you would never eat?
Ukrainian Kholodets. Boil pig knuckles, remove the meat and stir it into a meat broth, and chill until it forms jelly. Think meat flavored jello.

Thank you Evelyn for taking the time to answer a few questions. Can I just say I wouldn't touch Ukrainian Kholodets with a ten foot pole!

Evelyn is offering a copy of her book Beyond the Rapids to a follower of this blog!

Beyond the Rapids by Evelyn Puerto:

Imagine that you are a believer living in a communist country. You live with the knowledge that at any time you could be imprisoned, tortured, or killed simply because you are a Christian.
Beyond the Rapids is the true story of a Ukrainian pastor, Alexei Brynza, and his wife, Valentina, who endured persecution in a culture that was hostile to their faith as they struggled to raise their four children as believers.
From the Great Terror of the 1930s to the time when believing in Christ was no longer a crime, this close-knit Ukrainian family quietly persisted through the years, trust God for everything. The Brynzas’ children, forced to choose between God and the communist system, wrestled with temptations of ambition, popularity, love, and wealth. How this family managed to endure and thrive in spite of fierce persecution demonstrates how God is faithful not matter how our circumstances change.
To learn more about the book, the Brynza family, and to read the first chapter, visit Beyond The Rapids.

Children's Book Wednesday: Fixer-Mixer and the Friends of Gooseville by Althea Southwick

Should Fixer-Mixer befriend a new goose who is different than the rest of his friends?
Or should he treat her like the rest of them and ignore his own feelings about the situation?

I received a copy of Fixer-Mixer and Friends of Gooseville at the St. George Book Festival on Saturday. Author Althea Southwick did a fabulous job writing a story that teaches values.

This story tells what happens when a new duck Quaky-Lacky moves to town. Quaky-Lacky is different than the other ducks and some of the ducks are mean to her. Fixer-Mixer has to decide if he will go along with the others or have the courage to do what is right.

I enjoy books like this one that teach an important lesson to children. Reminds me of a story you would find in The Book of Virtues. Filled with colorful, simple illustrations, this book will delight readers of all ages.

Interview & Giveaway: Author Jarett Waite

Welcome to author Jarett Waite!

Jarett Waite was born and raised in a rural community in Idaho. He attended Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Business Management in 2005. He met his wife, Jenna, shortly after graduating and they now have two sons and a daughter, Bryce, Tyler, and Talia. Jarett owns Laser Mania Family Fun Center in St. George, Utah, and enjoys managing the day-to-day operations. His writing has been featured in trade magazines and he speaks at conventions regularly.

Jarett has recently published his first book I Asked Her Out, She Said Yes - Now What? A Crash Course in Dates That Lead to Relationships. After a short interview, followers of this blog will have the chance to win one of 5 copies of his book.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would definitely go into the future. I'm pretty tech-savy, so giving up my cell phone and laptop to live in the past would be pretty miserable. Also, not having the vast amounts of information on the internet at my fingertips would be a real bummer.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
A swiss army knife, a short-wave radio, and a Kindle with a lot of books on it. That way I could try to contact passing ships, never be bored with a ton of books to read, and take care of business with the swiss army knife.

What is the last book you read?
The last book I read was Driven, the biography of Larry Miller. I tore through it in a few days and highly recommend it. It was both entertaining and informative. I took a class in college that he taught and have been able to apply many of the lessons he taught to my life. He was an amazing person. Not perfect, but amazing.

What is the last movie you saw?
Toy Story 3. It was the first time either of my sons had been to a movie theater, so it was quite the adventure. I liked the movie a lot.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Super Fix-It Man. I'm the guy that everyone on the block calls if something goes wrong with their computer or anything electronic.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I think the most common response to this question is the ability to fly. I agree with everybody else.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
I'm a biscuits and gravy fan. It doesn't get much better than that.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
I needed to be alone away from distractions. I wrote the majority of my book late at night. I also wrote a good portion of it away from home on boy scout trips. During the day while the scouts were off doing their activities I would be back at the camp typing away. It was kind of weird, but worked for me.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl for sure. I'm up until 2:00 a.m. most nights. Thankfully, my job lends itself well to this schedule, though my wife says once the kids are in school, I'll have to change my ways :-(.

Thanks Jarett for taking a few minutes to answer a few questions. For more information please visit Jarett's website.

Review: I Asked Her Out, She Said Yes - Now What? by Jarett Waite

This book is a simple, straightforward, logical guide to dating the right way. No gimmicks, no tricks, just practical advice that really works. If you're new to the dating scene, fed up with short-lived relationships, sick of awkward dates with girls, or would just like to fine-tune your dating skills, this book is definitely for you. I met Jarett Waite at the St. George Book Festival on Saturday. He was kind enough of offer me a copy of his book I Asked Her Out, She Said Yes - Now What?

I am obviously not the target audience for this book but I do have a son who turns 16 next month and thought it might be a book I could pass on to him.

I Asked Her Out, She Said Yes - Now What?: A Crash Course in Dates that Lead to Relationships is a quick, easy read. It's just 75 pages long which is a great length for the target audience. It's not intimidating and short enough to read in a single sitting. The books discusses dating basics including being creative, having fun, being yourself and a step by step walk through on planning a date.

Ironically when I got home on Saturday afternoon I found my son and his friends getting ready to go to a dance. They were surfing the internet looking for ideas on how to ask a girl to dance and how to talk to her. I'm sure this book would be right up their alley. Now to get them to read it. If I hand it to my son I'm sure he'll balk and want nothing to do with it so I'm just going to put it on his nightstand and hopefully he'll pick it up and read it.

If you have a son, grandson (or boyfriend) who is just starting to date this would be a good book to give to them. Even better for those who are a little older and need a few tips.

Blog Tour: Red Ink by Kathi Macias Giveaway

I recently did an Interview with author Kathi Macias.

Here is a small exerpt from that interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future? 1948. It’s the year I was born, and also the year Israel once again became a nation. I’d love to have been a part of that historic moment in the Middle East!

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?(I’m assuming “things” discounts people, so I’ll leave my hubby out of the mix, but I’d definitely want him there!) A Bible, a laptop with a FOREVER battery, and an endless supply of Diet Pepsi.

You can read the full interview HERE.

Red Ink:
A young Chinese woman, Zhen-Li raised to observe the party line, including its one-child-per-family doctrine falls in love with and marries a Christian, and adopts his faith. Though the couple downplays their Christianity in an effort to survive, Zhen-Li's family is appalled, and she and her husband are ostracized. When she becomes pregnant for the second time and refuses to have an abortion, the persecution begins in earnest. Zhen-Lis parents, under pressure from the government, pay to have Zhen-Li kidnapped and the baby aborted. It is then Zhen-Li decides she must live up to her name Truth and take a firm stand for her faith, regardless of the consequences, and so she begins to regularly teach children about Zhu Yesu Lord Jesus and to distribute Christian literature every chance she gets. Based loosely on the life of Christian magazine editor Li Ying, currently serving a ten-year prison sentence in China, the story of Yang Zhen-Li tells the desperate tale of her incarceration and separation from her family, as she continues to minister to other prisoners, and even to her guards.
