Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Jessica Rules the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

Welcome to Author Beth Fantaskey

I was raised and still live in rural Pennsylvania, a place that features prominently in my books. (There's nothing unusual about getting stuck in Amish buggy "traffic" where I live.)
I've been a burger-slinger at a diner called "Diffy's," a teenage tax collector, a journalist, and now a part-time professor at Susquehanna University. But my most fun job is "YA author," because I get to interact with so many interesting readers.

INTERVIEW:
If you were a superhero what would your name be?
The Worrier. I am probably the best worrier on planet Earth. I would fret my enemies into baffled submission when we fought. “Be careful! You’re going to trip! Is your shoe untied?”

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
I dislike almost all breakfast food and generally subsist on coffee until noon. Eggs... ughs.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I’ve had a lot of girls tell me that my “imperfect” heroines – i.e. they are average weight, shy, maybe not “book smart,” etc. – give them confidence to be themselves, rather than conform to some arbitrary standard for the “perfect” weight or personality. I love that. It means a lot to me.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world which would it be?
“The Mists of Avalon.” I was spellbound by the whole mystical, regal, romantic world when I was a kid.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Joan Cusack. She’s different looking – that’s a compliment, Joan! – and lispy and quirky, and I get the sense that she genuinely loves to laugh. I think we’re sisters in some parallel universe.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I’m incredibly shy, like Jill Jekel in my book Jekel Loves Hyde. We don’t share any other characteristics, but we do have that in common.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
One day, when I was stressing over a manuscript, my husband noted, “This is supposed to be fun, right?” And I immediately realized I was way too tense. Now it’s my mantra for life – something I repeat every day to keep those worries at bay.

Nickname?
“One-er.” My dad bestowed it upon me, because he considers me one of a kind.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I didn’t! I never even told my family and friends that I’d sold a manuscript until the book was actually hitting stores. I like to play things close to the vest.

What is your guilty pleasure?
On Friday nights, I like to put my kids to bed, then simultaneously read tabloid magazines, watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives – and eat a Big Mac and large order of fries. It’s so pathetic – and makes me so happy.

Jessica Rules the Dark Side
It’s one thing to find out you’re a vampire princess. It’s a whole other thing to actually rule. Newly married Jessica Packwood is having a hard enough time feeling regal with her husband, Lucius, at her side. But when evidence in the murder of a powerful elder points to Lucius, sending him into solitary confinement, Jessica is suddenly on her own. Determined to clear her husband’s name, Jessica launches into a full-scale investigation, but hallucinations and nightmares of betrayal keep getting in her way. Jessica knows that with no blood to drink, Lucius’s time is running out. Can she figure out who the real killer is—and whom she can trust—before it’s too late?

Author Interview: Forbidden by Syrie & Ryan James

Welcome to Author Syrie James

Syrie James is the bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Nocturne;  Dracula, My Love; The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte (Great Group Read, Women's National Book Association; Audie Romance Award, 2011), and the international bestseller The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen (Best First Novel 2008, Library Journal.) Translation rights for Syrie's books have been sold in sixteen languages. An admitted Anglophile, Syrie loves paranormal romance and all things 19th century. She lives in Los Angeles and is a member of the Writer's Guild of America.
Known for her critically acclaimed historical and romance fiction, Syrie James is excited to announce that she co-wrote her newest novel, Forbidden, with her son, Ryan James. A page-turning tale of wit, fantasy, pop culture, mystery, and paranormal romance, Forbidden has been getting critical raves. The week before its release, Forbidden was ranked #4 on Amazon under Being a Teen and #12 under Teens/Love & Romance!

INTERVIEW:

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
“The plot and storyline are great, and the characters strong... the James' go full-out... If you enjoy angels, 'forbidden' romance and dashing heroes, then this should be added to your TBR." USA TODAY

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m currently writing a Jane Austen-themed novel for Penguin Books. I have many goals, but two are to have my novel THE SECRET DIARIES OF CHARLOTTE BRONTË made into a film, and to turn my novel FORBIDDEN into a series.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
The emails I get from readers all over the world, telling me how much my books have meant to them.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
There is a lot of music in my novel NOCTURNE, and the theme song is “My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose.” You can watch a beautiful audio/video of the song here. If FORBIDDEN has a theme song it’s “Stick With Me Baby,” since Claire and Alec sing it as a duet in a key scene together.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Study the craft of writing, write what you love to read, re-write and then re-write again, believe in yourself, and never give up on your dream.

What is your favorite Quote?
“Twenty years from now you’ll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the trade winds in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover.” —Mark Twain

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
A writer.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Laura Linney. People keep telling me that I look like her. I am SO flattered!

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
No matter who you are, what you do, or what you wish for … if you press on, keep your goals in sight, and put in the hard work, you can achieve your dreams—no matter how impossible or unlikely they may seem to someone else!

What was your favorite children's book?
A tie between Anne of Green Gables and The Secret Garden.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Anything by Jane Austen. Because not only are first editions of her novels priceless, but they were all published anonymously in her lifetime… so anything signed by her would be unbelievably rare, precious, and infinitely valuable.

What do you do in your free time?
Watch movies, go to the theater, play games with family and friends, take walks and jacuzzis.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
I wake up, turn on the computer, do email, do the treadmill for half an hour, have brunch, and then write until dinner time. After dinner, I hang out with my husband for a couple of hours and then go back to writing, promotion, answering fan mail, or website-related work until way, way past my bedtime.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
Gave a tea party, Jane Austen-style.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
You mean assuming I already have food, water, shelter, and antibiotics?  The 3 things I’d want are my husband, a cell phone with an endless charge and a perfect signal, and—while we’re waiting to be rescued--a laptop with an endless battery and a perfect connection to the internet and my Kindle. J

What is one book everyone should read?
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

What is you favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Reading a good book… or doing my best to write one!

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Eternal Life.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Abraham Lincoln.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
A tie between Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl. Totally.

Favorite quotes from a movie?
Do, or do not. There is no 'try'. (Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back)
AND
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. (Ferris Bueller's Day Off)

Book Review: Outside In by Maria V. Snyder

Title: Outside In
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Series: #2 of 2 Insiders Series
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Released: March 1, 2011
Website: http://mariavsnyder.com/

Book Summary:

Me? A Leader? Okay, I did prove that there's more to Inside than we knew. That a whole world exists beyond this cube we live in. And finding that led to a major rebellion - between worker scrubs like me and the snobby uppers who rule our world. Make that ruled. Because of me, we're free. I thought that meant I was off the hook, and could go off on my own again - while still touching base with Riley, of course. He's the one upper I think I can trust. But then we learned that there's outside and then there is Outside. And something from Outside wants In.
I wouldn't go so far as to say I was disappointed with this sequel because I did like it.  I just didn't love it like I hoped I would.  Being such a fan of Maria's Study Series I had high expectations for this book and this sequel didn't quite live up to those high expectations.

Outside In was full of action and adventure and plot twists.  There was a lot going on in this story but I finished the book not really understanding exactly how everything had played out.  It seemed like there could have been a little less going on and little more detail and back story filled in.  The first book Inside Out was a clean read while Outside In had content I wish wasn't included.

I did like watching Trella grow and change especially in her relationship with her mother and Riley.  She makes some stupid decisions at times but learns from her mistakes.  I did like this book and don't regret reading it.

I'm going to start on Maria's Glass & Healer series soon to see if they better capture the magic I felt while reading the Study Series.

Book Review: With a Name Like Love by Tess Hilmo

Title: With a Name Like Love
Author: Tess Hilmo
Series: None
Publisher: Farrar Straus Giroux
Released: September 27, 2011
Website: http://tesshilmo.com/

Book Summary:

When Ollie’s daddy, the Reverend Everlasting Love, pulls their travel trailer into Binder to lead a three-day revival, Ollie knows that this town will be like all the others they visit— it is exactly the kind of nothing Ollie has come to expect. But on their first day in town, Ollie meets Jimmy Koppel, whose mother is in jail for murdering his father. Jimmy insists that his mother is innocent, and Ollie believes him. Still, even if Ollie convinces her daddy to stay in town, how can two kids free a grown woman who has signed a confession? Ollie’s longing for a friend and her daddy’s penchant for searching out lost souls prove to be a formidable force in this tiny town where everyone seems bent on judging and jailing without a trial.

With a Name Like Love is a wonderful middle, grade historical fiction, read that reminded me of Little House on the Prairie.

Ollie's dad is a traveling preacher. Every three days her family moves on to a new town. That's the way life is, the way it has always been and the way it seems like it will always be. At least until the family arrives in Binder, Arkansas. When Ollie befriends lonely Jimmy Koppel the family's way of life is turned upside down and they find themselves in a battle to help Jimmy and his mother.

This book is a heartfelt story that would make a great read aloud.

Book Review: Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder

Title: Inside Out
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Series: #1 of 2 in the Insider Duet
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Released: April 1, 2010
Website: http://mariavsnyder.com

Book Summary:

Keep Your Head Down.
Don't Get Noticed.
Or Else.

I'm Trella. I'm a scrub. A nobody. One of thousands who work the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I've got one friend, do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? The only neck at risk is my own…until I accidentally start a rebellion and become the go-to girl to lead a revolution.

Maria Snyder's Study Series has been one of my long time favorites so I was excited to finally get around to reading Inside Out. This book ended up being far different from the Study series but I still enjoyed it.

It's hard to say much about this one that isn't a spoiler.  Inside Out is a dystopian story with a science fiction twist. There were many things that were similar to several other dystopian books I've read recently, it helped to remind myself that this one was written prior to those books.

Maria Snyder proves once again that she is a great writer.  Great characters and lots of twists and turns made for a fun read. There was romance in this book but it wasn't the main focus, more of a side story.

Although I definitely enjoyed the Study series more than this one I can't complain because this was a great young adult book.  As soon as I finished I started in on the sequel.

Rating: 4 Stars - Great Book

Content: Clean - there may have been a mild swear word or two but I can't remember anything else

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on fans, compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together, they endure the agony of foot-binding, and reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their deep friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart.

The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself.

FOR REVIEW:

Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale

When Charlotte Kinder treats herself to a two-week vacation at Austenland, she happily leaves behind her ex-husband and his delightful new wife, her ever-grateful children, and all the rest of her real life in America. She dons a bonnet and stays at a country manor house that provides an immersive Austen experience, complete with gentleman actors who cater to the guests' Austen fantasies.

Everyone at Pembrook Park is playing a role, but increasingly, Charlotte isn't sure where roles end and reality begins. And as the parlor games turn a little bit menacing, she finds she needs more than a good corset to keep herself safe. Is the brooding Mr. Mallery as sinister as he seems? What is Miss Gardenside's mysterious ailment? Was that an actual dead body in the secret attic room? And-perhaps of the most lasting importance-could the stirrings in Charlotte's heart be a sign of real-life love?

The follow-up to reader favorite Austenland provides the same perfectly plotted pleasures, with a feisty new heroine, plenty of fresh and frightening twists, and the possibility of a romance that might just go beyond the proper bounds of Austen's world. How could it not turn out right in the end?

Twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances and first loves. Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it.

Interview & Giveaway: Conquering Your Goliaths by Kathryn Elizabeth Jones

Welcome to Author Kathryn Elizabeth Jones

When I was young I thought I had to sound like a great writer to be one. It was all so overwhelming; now I know I only need to sound like myself. My ideas come from two primary sources. My work might spark from the enlightening words of a friend, teacher or writing prompt. At other times, I am sitting in a very still space and the words I should write come to me like a powerful and glowing wind.

My favorite tool is the pen. Though computer keys get the words down quicker and easier, I like to put pen to paper, smell the ink, see the words as they are developed and renewed by new phrases or thoughts.

I enjoy traveling to wherever the character takes me. This often means even I am surprised and warmed at the outcome. In the end, when my writing is done, I like to watch the eyes of the reader whenever I can. Their reflective expression gives me the greatest glimpse into what my writing has become.

Before I was one, I loved to read books-or at least, pretend to. I couldn't walk yet but I would crawl to the bottom shelf for what I wanted. My Grandma says my books were placed near the floor for that very reason, and my mother speaks of me pulling my favorite book from the shelf and crawling back to the couch with the book safely in tow.

I would sit on the couch and pretend to read, speaking the language of some foreign diplomat-or perhaps, the tongue of angels, my mother wasn't quite sure which, and when I was done, I would crawl back to the shelf for another story.

When I am not writing I'm reading. I am an avid reader of the scriptures and books of spiritual merit. I have been married 30 years and enjoy teaching and working with youth and children-including my own three girls, three grand-daughters and grandson.

A published writer since 1987, I have published various newspaper and magazine articles for teens and adults

INTERVIEW:
What is one book everyone should read?

“Mere Christianity,” by C.S. Lewis

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
It will connect you with God.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I was pregnant with my first daughter and stuck home feeling sick. I decided to write.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
“Never give up. Never surrender” (From the movie, “Galaxy Quest”).

What is your favorite Quote?
“If I were stunk in the lowest pit of Nova Scotia with the rocky mountains piled upon me, I would hang on, exercise faith, keep up good courage and I would come out on top” (Joseph Smith).

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yes. Ms. Virginia Bean, only Virginia is a bit more daring and adventurous.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Do what you love.

How do you react to a bad review?
I have a “mad/crazy” moment, then I work on seeing the truth behind the comment and make changes as necessary.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
It’s already been done—twice. First with, “A River of Stones,” and second with “Conquering your Goliaths.” The first book told the story of a young girl named Samantha and her parent’s divorce, the second, about a woman striving to get to know God on a more personal level. Both books are fictional renditions of me.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
Okay, it’s “Little House on the Prairie.” I cry every time.

Chocolate or Vanilla?
Definitely chocolate. If they don’t have chocolate in heaven, I’m not going.

Facebook or Twitter?
Twitter!! I’m just discovering its joys!

Conquering Your Goliaths
David gathered 5 smooth stones to meet and defeat Goliath. What did these stones represent and how can you use them to conquer Goliaths in your own personal quests? Ms. Virginia Bean will show you how.

Travel with her on her own personal journey. See what she does. Learn how she grows. Discover what she becomes.

“Conquering your Goliaths—A Parable of the Five Stones” is for anyone desiring to travel beyond mediocrity, pain and fear. Learn of the great power within you, a power given to you from God, a power that must ultimately be unleashed to conquer the Goliaths in your own life. Come to an even deeper understanding of God and what he wants for you.

Debut Author Interview: Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Welcome to Author Marissa Meyer!

MARISSA MEYER was born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, home of Almond Roca and Stadium High School, which was made famous when Heath Ledger danced down the stadium steps in 10 Things I Hate About You. Marissa didn’t actually go to Stadium High School, but she did attend Pacific Lutheran University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing. She still lives in Tacoma, now with her husband. Cinder is her YA debut.

INTERVIEW:
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I’m kind of a klutz, so I have a fascination with gymnastic-type superpowers. Extreme grace, agility, flexibility… the ability to do a cartwheel. Stuff like that.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate chip cookie dough. I like to eat all the actual ice cream first so at the end I’m left with just big spoonfuls of cookie dough. Yummmm.

One food you would never eat?
I consider myself a fairly adventurous eater, but I don’t think I could do anything in the insect family. *shudders*

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
From a kick-butt heroine to a charming prince, cruel villains and hilarious sidekick androids, technology and “magic,” romance and action, I really do feel that CINDER has something for just about everyone.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Right now I’m plugging away on the rest of the four-book series and I’ll be in revision land for quite some time. After that, though, I have lots of ideas for more YA books, from fantasy to paranormal, contemporary to historical. We’ll see what I’m inspired to write next when the time comes.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
“Invincible” by Muse feels to me like it was written for The Lunar Chronicles. The idea that by joining together we become invincible is definitely a theme in the series.

How did you know you should become an author?
It sounds melodramatic, but there were times when the desire to be an author would leave me practically in tears—I wanted it so bad. I don’t know that there was ever really another path for me.

What movie are you looking forward to this year?
Hunger Games!!! And also The Hobbit.

What's your favorite season/weather?
I love autumn. In the Pacific Northwest we get a lot of gray, drizzly days, which are perfect for spending with a cup of hot cocoa and my laptop, or a book.

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I had a bottle of champagne I’d been saving for a year or two. I’d even made a special tag for it with a gold-stamped “P,” for “Get Published.” I enjoyed it with my family.

Write a Haiku about your book
Cyborg cinder girl.
Android fairy godmother.
Still has prince charming.

Horror or Romance?
Definitely romance. I live for kissing scenes. Plus I’m a huge scaredy-cat, so horror stories tend to infiltrate my imagination and keep me up at night.

INTERVIEW:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I would go back to the Roman Empire. In The 58th Keeper Archy has to travel back in time, and he takes two good friends with him. I did as much research as I could, so that the readers get a pretty good feel for that particular period. I have always wondered if we have progressed or regressed since Roman times. By that, I mean the Romans were ingenious--they invented the aqueducts, concrete, underfloor heating and roadways, but they also burnt people alive, slaughtered animals and stabbed each other in the back...all before breakfast. There were some brilliant minds like Marcus Aurelius, Julius Caesar and Epictetus but they were also brutal and unforgiving--leaders like Lucius Commodus and Caligula. I wonder where are we today by comparison?

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
1. I'd like to have met my grandfather. Apparently he was quite a character that owned a number of businesses in Cheddar, England.
2. I'm sure Mick Jagger could tell a few good stories
3. Henry the VIII
4. Mahatma Ghandi, to keep the conversation balanced
5. My wife--I'm on this trip with her. (Although she would probably kick Mick Jagger out and swap for him Michelangelo...pfft!)

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The power of flight. To be able to fly off to wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted and at great speed would be a Superpower I would use all day and all night.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Ben and Jerrys make a chocolate one called Phish Food - It really should be illegal. I can wolf a whole tub and not even feel shame when I lick the lid.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Archy is an ordinary boy who gets thrown into extraordinary situations, and it's how he handles matters and the characters he meets that make the story a fun read.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have written a short story series titled, The Caldecott Chronicles about an Earl and a teenage girl called Saffy who defend their property from Zombies.
It's set in Victorian England. I’m thrilled as I just got an endorsement this morning from a New York Times bestselling author.

"The Caldecott Chronicles is gruesome, elegant, witty and a hell of a lot of fun. This is why zombie fiction continues to surprise even the most jaded reader!" -
Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling and multiple Bram Stoker award winner.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Read from Monday to Wednesday and write from Thursday to Saturday. Go wild Sunday.

What is your favorite Quote?
Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em...”

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
My mother, when she gave me advice on how to talk to girls. “Be yourself.”

Favorite Food?
Indian Curry

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I am looking forward to Sherlock Holmes #2 and hope they keep up the intrigue, rapport and pace of the first one. We’ll see.

Nickname?
The moment I was born I was named Bullet

Favorite smell?
Wood Smoke

Favorite sport?
Rugby
