Thankful Thursday 1/31

This is not a "new" idea.  Thankful Thursday has been around for years.  Back when I was regularly posting on my personal blog I often put up a Thankful Thursday post. I searched the internet looking for the originator of the idea but it is hosted on so many different blogs I couldn't begin to guess who gets the credit for it.  My personal blog doesn't get posted on anymore but I've been thinking a lot about gratitude lately.  I'm going to be putting up a Thankful Thursday post regularly on this blog.  Sometimes it will be about reading or blogging and other times it will be more personal.

THANKFUL THURSDAY

Thursday is almost over and this is the first chance I've had in over 24 hours to sit down at my computer for more than a minute or two.

Today I'm thankful to be home.

I have a son with some medical problems. Overall things have been going well but sometimes things can get a little rocky and I feared we weren't going to make it through this blip without a trip to the hospital. Thankfully we are currently home and I am hoping, praying and believing that we are going to make it through this rough spot with nothing more than a little lost sleep.  I'm also grateful for a couple of dear friends who have gone out of their way to help.  The bring to my mind this quote from Spencer W. Kimball.

"God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs."

There is always something to be grateful for.  What are you thankful for?

I invite you to join me....  Put up your own post, leave a comment or just take a minute to think of something you are grateful for.

The Long Way Home by Mariah Stewart

Welcome back to Author Mariah Stewart

Mariah Stewart is the award-winning New York Times bestselling author of more than thirty novels of contemporary romance and romantic suspense. A native of Hightstown, New Jersey, she lives with her husband and their dogs amid the rolling hills and Amish farms of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania, where she gardens, reads, and enjoys country life.

Interview

1. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I’d want to fly – because I’m claustrophobic and the world’s biggest wimp and cannot bring myself to get into a plane (I know my friends are all laughing at me right now) but if I could fly like Superman I wouldn’t need to worry about it!

2. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
My husband’s coconut rum raisin. To. Die. For.

3. What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
This week, it’s whole grain toast with chunky peanut butter and thinly sliced pears.

4. What is your favorite Quote?
Easy one! Nora Ephron: “Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”

5. What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
See #4 above.

6. If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Salted dark chocolate caramels from Neuchatel (look it up!).

7. How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
Valentine’s Day, 1995. Huge book signing at a brand spanking new Borders, planned on a terrific dinner with husband and another couple. Unfortunately, no one had thought to make reservations (Valentine’s Day…) so we ended up getting pizza and taking it home. It was a great celebration all the same!

8. In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Janet Evanovich, because I grew up outside of Trenton, NJ, went to Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), and I knew the territory! I swear I went to school with more than one Stephanie Plum!

9. Do you prefer a bunch of small gifts or one big expensive one?
Is it crass to say both?

10. If you could take over the world, would you?
In a heartbeat, are you kidding me? I tell my husband all the time that I’d like to be empress of the world for just two weeks.
Bye-bye war. Bye-bye poverty. Bye-bye companies that put profit ahead of the common good. Bye-bye to anyone in government who cannot put his/her personal ambitions aside for the good of the country.
By the way, I’m great at delegating, so anyone who thinks they’d like to be part of my cabinet, please let me know what job you feel qualified for!

The Long Way Home

As the only child of a wealthy investment manager, Ellie Chapman has never known anything besides a life of perfect privilege. But her years of good fortune come to an abrupt end when her father is exposed for swindling billions of dollars from innocent investors in a massive Ponzi scheme. And just like that, Ellie loses everything: money, job, home—even her fiancé, who’s jailed as her father’s partner in crime. With no job prospects on the horizon, no cash, and her family name in tatters, Ellie has only one place to go.
.
Sleepy St. Dennis, Maryland, is hardly where Ellie intends to stay, however.  Keeping her identity a secret, she plans to sell the house her late mother left her in the small town and use the proceeds to move on with her life.  Unfortunately, her ticket to a new beginning is in dire need of a laundry list of pricey improvements, many of which she’ll have to do herself.  And until the house on Bay View Road is fit to be sold, the sole place Ellie will be traveling is the hardware store.  But as the many charms of St. Dennis–not to mention Cameron O’Connor, the handsome local contractor who has secrets of his own–begin to work their magic, what begins as a lesson in do-it-yourself renovations might just end up as Ellie’s very own rejuvenation.

Blog Tour: Book Review Witch in the Wind by Brenda M. Collins

Brenda M. Collins'
Witch in the Wind

Everything happens in Bandit Creek when witches, warlocks and canine familiars slip through the portal from the magical world called THE OTHERLAND.

When murder strikes in Bandit Creek, and the victims aren’t who they seemed, powerful guardian warlock, Marcus Egan, is sent from The Otherland to investigate. What he doesn’t expect to find is Avalon Gwynn, the grieving daughter of the victims, who has no idea she’s an extraordinary, hereditary witch. And Avy’s pent up magical abilities have just been set free in the mortal world.

Can Marcus catch a killer while making sure Avy doesn’t bring Crow Mountain crashing down on the town—destroying Bandit Creek for the second time?

This is a sweet paranormal novella of approximately 50,000 words written for an adult audience but also suitable for young adult readers.

My Review:
It wasn't until I was finished reading and looked online that I  learned this book is part of a series.  The books in the series are set in the same town and apparently have characters who carry over from series to series but read as stand alones.

Witch in the Wind was a one sitting read.  I read it on my kindle but it is a novella that is probably only about 100 pages in length. It was an entertaining story that moved along quickly. It mixed elements of romance, mystery and the paranormal to create a story that kept my interest.

Rating: 3.5 Stars - Good Book

Content: Mild language throughout but otherwise clean

Source: Kindle copy for review as part of a blog tour

Genre/Age Level: Paranormal Romance suitable for older teens and adults

Everything happens in Bandit Creek when WITCHES, WARLOCKS, and CANINE FAMILIARS slip the portal from THE OTHERLAND

(Excerpt from Chapter 2)

Marcus debated if he should fade into the background. In his line of work, his talent for making even another witch’s eye look past him without registering his presence was useful.

He felt another power surge. “What the—

The woman wasn't the magic source. Fierce, dark eyes locked on him, not in a friendly, or mortal, way. And the beast already knew Marcus was there. What the hell is a familiar doing here? Familiars couldn’t be summoned. They appeared only when gifted by a more powerful spirit in times of great danger. There hadn’t been such a creature around The Otherland for centuries. So who sent this one to the mortal world, he wondered. And why?

Pushing away from the wall, Marcus wandered over to the reception desk. By habit, he moved with quiet steps, yet the young woman seemed to sense his approach and turned in his direction. She pulled the cap from her head, pushed loose wisps of hair from her forehead, and looked up at him.

His breath stopped in his throat and his mouth watered. The little nymph was more than the usual pretty combination of golden blond hair and flawless fair skin. Her electric blue eyes, even smudged with fatigue, jolted his gut in a way he hadn’t felt since his teens, when his magical energy was working overtime along with his hormones.

He smiled and managed to keep his stance casual as he kept one eye on the familiar and one on the woman. She seemed startled for a second but then returned his smile with a brilliant one of her own. The familiar didn’t. He bared his teeth and growled.

“I mean you no harm.” He didn’t want the familiar to blow his cover so he stood completely still as he spoke to it directly.

To the woman he said, “Is he always afraid of strangers?”

The familiar rumbled again as if insulted.

“Only you as far as I know,” she replied. Her voice, a rich alto, wrapped around him like a siren’s song. “He was fine with me, and the sheriff, yesterday.”

He blinked trying to regain some control of his brain. “What’s his name?” He eased his hand, very slowly, towards the familiar murmuring reassurances that only the magical beast would understand.

“I don’t know really. I found him last night with no collar.” She shrugged and a light flush colored her cheeks. “I’ve been calling him Busby. You know, after the big furry hats the guards at Buckingham Palace wear. When I first saw him on my porch, that’s what he reminded me of.”

That answers one question, Marcus thought. He’s here to protect this woman. But does she know that? With his hand dangerously close to the familiar’s mouth, he let the beast scent the strength of his power. Warlocks were a level above most magical creatures, having been bred for generations as warriors. Of course, that didn’t mean the familiar wasn’t as strong, or even stronger. No one knew how familiars travelled from witch to witch and many assumed they were from the spirit realm.

Finally, the creature eased back on his haunches.

“Busby’s giving me a reprieve.” He very slowly withdrew his hand. To the familiar he said, “Giving me a chance, aren’t you, Busby. But you let me know who’s got the teeth when it comes to this woman.” He stepped back.

Her most recent article, entitled How to Improve your Presentations, is in the 2013 Writer’s Market (Brewer, R.L., ed. F&W Media Inc. p. 153).

Brenda’s debut novel, WITCH IN THE WIND, starts with a murder, but comes to life with witches, warlocks, a canine familiar and a magical dimension called The Otherland.
