Rare Disease Day Spotlight & Gift Card or Paypal Cash Giveaway

On this day, millions of patients and their families will share their stories to focus a spotlight on rare diseases as an important global public health concern.
“There are nearly 30 million Americans—and millions more around the world—affected by rare diseases,” said Peter L. Saltonstall, president and CEO of NORD.  “Everyone knows someone with a rare disease.  But, while many of these diseases are serious and lifelong, most have no treatment and many are not even being studied by researchers.  This leaves patients and families without hope for a better future.”
On Rare Disease Day, people with rare diseases around the world promote awareness of the challenges of living with a rare disease.  The global theme for 2013 is “Rare Disorders Without Borders.”
World Rare Disease Day was launched in Europe in 2008 and last year was observed in more than 60 nations.  It is always observed on the last day of February.  On that day, patients and patient organizations will post stories, videos and blogs online and host events to raise awareness of these diseases, which are often called “orphans”.
This year, the observance has special significance in the U.S. because 1983 is also the 30th anniversary of the Orphan Drug Act, which provides incentives to encourage companies to develop treatments for rare diseases, and of NORD, which was established by patient advocates in 1983.
“More than half of the people who have rare diseases are children,” Saltonstall said.  “Challenges faced by patients and their families include delayed diagnosis, few treatment options, and difficulty finding medical experts.  Many rare diseases have no approved treatment.  Insurance may not cover treatments that aren’t approved.  Also, treatments for rare diseases tend to be more expensive than those for common diseases.”
In 1983, the Orphan Drug Act was passed by Congress to create financial incentives for companies to develop treatments for rare diseases.  Since then, more than 400 orphan drugs and biologics have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  It is estimated that approximately 15 million Americans benefit from these products, but that still leaves millions more with diseases for which there is no approved treatment.

Author Interview: The Collector by Victoria Scott

Welcome to Author Victoria Scott

I’m a YA writer with a die-hard affection for dark and humorous books. My workis represented by the fabulous Laurie McLean of Larsen-Pomada literary agency. I have a master’s degree in marketing, and am a member of the Writers’ League of Texas and Teen Shiver.

My first YA book, THE COLLECTOR, will be published by Entangled Teen, April 2013. It is the first book in a trilogy. My second YA series will begin with THE BRIMSTONE BLEED and is being published by Scholastic in spring 2014.

I currently live in Dallas with my husband, Ryan.

Interview
If you could invite 5 people to dinner, who would you choose?
Ooh, good question. I’d pick JK Rowling and Suzanne Collins to discuss writing with, the chef from my favorite Greek restaurant to add yummy food, and Ryan Gosling and Johnny Depp to fight over my love.

What is one book everyone should read?
BIRD BY BIRD by Anne Lamott. It’s a great book on writing and on life in general.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough all the way!

What was your favorite book when you were a teen?
Anything by Christopher Pike and RL Stine. I liked the creepy stuff.

What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever received?
I don’t remember who said it, but an author in a writing magazine said, “Breaking into writing is terribly hard. Be the one.” I’ll never forget that “Be the one” line.

Favorite Food?
Hummus with lots of oil and garlic with warm pita bread. Give it all to me.

How do you react to a bad review?
Immediately believe it’s true and that I suck at all things. I’m working on thickening my skin.

What do you do with your free time?
Study interior design, garden, volunteer, hang out with friends / family, and kiss my husband.

What is your favorite season?
Fall. Even though raking makes me want to rip my hair out, there’s something so beautiful about leaves changing colors and pumpkins sitting on porches. Love it!

In your wildest dreams, which author would you want to co-author a book with?
Lauren Destefano. We don’t have similar writing styles, but she’s so hilarious on Twitter that I’d love to co-author a romantic comedy or some jazz. That girl is Funny.

The Collector

He makes good girls...bad.

Dante Walker is flippin’ awesome, and he knows it. His good looks, killer charm, and stellar confidence have made him one of hell’s best—a soul collector. His job is simple: weed through humanity and label those round rears with a big red good or bad stamp. Old Saint Nick gets the good guys, and he gets the fun ones. Bag-and-tag.

Sealing souls is nothing personal. Dante’s an equal-opportunity collector and doesn't want it any other way. But he’ll have to adjust, because Boss Man has given him a new assignment:

Collect Charlie Cooper’s soul within ten days.

Dante doesn't know why Boss Man wants Charlie, nor does he care. This assignment means only one thing to him, and that’s a permanent ticket out of hell. But after Dante meets the quirky Nerd Alert chick he’s come to collect, he realizes this assignment will test his abilities as a collector…and uncover emotions deeply buried.

Thankful Thursday 2/28

This is not a "new" idea.  Thankful Thursday has been around for years.  Back when I was regularly posting on my personal blog I often put up a Thankful Thursday post. I searched the internet looking for the originator of the idea but it is hosted on so many different blogs I couldn't begin to guess who gets the credit for it.  My personal blog doesn't get posted on anymore but I've been thinking a lot about gratitude lately.  I'm going to be putting up a Thankful Thursday post regularly on this blog.  Sometimes it will be about reading or blogging and other times it will be more personal.

THANKFUL THURSDAY

It's been one of those weeks and I've really had to take sometime to think of something I'm thankful for.  I decided that I'm most grateful today for my 5 children.  They are the source of both my greatest trials and my greatest joys. This week has brought more trials than joy but I am lucky and grateful to have them!

There is always something to be grateful for.  What are you thankful for?

I invite you to join me....  Put up your own post, leave a comment or just take a minute to think of something you are grateful for.

Post Mortem by Kira Snyder - Interview & Giveaway

Welcome back to Author Kira Snyder

Kira Snyder is a writer living in Los Angeles. Her television work includes the Syfy Channel shows ALPHAS and EUREKA and the People’s Choice Award-winning vampire drama MOONLIGHT, which aired on CBS. Kira’s plays have been performed at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the Burton-Taylor Theatre in Oxford, England, the Bay Area Independent Theatre Fringe Festival, and Stanford University. Also a game designer with a Masters degree from NYU-Tisch’s interactive media program, Kira has produced games for Electronic Arts, Purple Moon, Microsoft, There.com, the MIT Press textbook Rules of Play, and Yahoo, including EA’s seminal alternate reality game MAJESTIC. She is a proud geek and loves sci-fi and videogames, reading and playing when she’s not writing or designing.

Interview
What was your favorite children's book?
As a kid, Dr. Seuss’s Sleep Book. When I was a little older, Harriet the Spy and every fairy tale and ghost story I could get my hands on. It’s no wonder that I went on to write Parish Mail, a series about a smart, resourceful teen girl detective who discovers a world of magic, secrets, and ghosts in her hometown of New Orleans.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I see facets of myself in them, for sure. I definitely have Celia’s drive to solve mysteries and her stubbornness. Like Tilly, I was a gothy teen but also Perky not Emo. Luc’s moody like I can sometimes be, and I share Donovan’s tendency to smartass humor. I don’t have much in common with Sloan, Peyton, and their clique, but I see them as reminders to stay grounded and be kind.

What is your guilty pleasure?
I love day spas, massages, etc. It’s kind of an expensive habit, thought, so in between splurges I also enjoy just reading spa menus online. Seriously! I find it very relaxing.

What words or expression do you overuse?
I try very hard not to repeat myself when writing, but in person I confess to saying “awesome” way too much. I blame 7+ years in Los Angeles.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Salted caramel.

Favorite sport?
To watch, baseball (Go Giants!). To do, yoga.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with music?
I listen to classical music when I write. I get distracted by music with lyrics, and anything with too driving a beat tends to stress me out, heh.

Do you write as you go or do you have the book all planned out from page 1?
Because Post Mortem and the other Parish Mail books are interactive and a bit gamelike – the choices you make for Celia determine if she solves the crime, and also affect her relationships – I have a flowchart mapping out all the story paths as well as a chapter-by-chapter outline. That being said, I treat the outline more as a map than a list of instructions, and I stay open to detours when inspiration hits as I’m writing.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Salted caramel ice cream. ;)

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Honestly, it’s simply any of those moments when a reader tells me they enjoyed one of my books. You spend so many hours alone at the computer, caught up in your head with your characters and their drama, that hearing you were able to connect through that story to a reader… I find that wonderfully humbling and gratifying.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
I have one piece of advice with two parts: Finish things. First off, finish a piece of writing in the sense of seeing it all the way through to The End or Fade Out. Lots of writers have half-finished books and screenplays lying around; be the one who actually finishes yours! The second part of my answer is to understand that finishing truly means rewriting when you’ve completed the rough first draft. There’s always rewriting, even for professional writers, so embrace it! When you’ve finished that first draft, get feedback from someone you trust, be it a friend, critique group, or editor, and rewrite that sucker. You want your work to be in the best shape possible before you send it into the world.

Craziest thing you ever ate?
Duck feet. By accident. Long story.

Post Mortem

Celia Macarty is back in Post Mortem, the second installment in the Parish Mail saga.
Autumn in New Orleans means Homecoming, romance—and murder. When a friend vanishes, Celia believes a desperate letter about an unsolved Civil War-era murder holds the key to unraveling the mystery.
As she searches for answers, Celia enlists the help of quirky witch Tilly, and either all-American boy Donovan or, enigmatic Luc–you get to choose.
As the gang follows the missing girl’s trail, danger turns up on all fronts. A vicious stranger threatens Celia’s family. Celia’s nightmares–about a shadowy, ominous villain–get worse. And a new ghost has appeared: beautiful Angelica, who shares a past with Luc.
It will take all of Celia’s will and wit, and the faith of her friends, to solve an unspeakable crime. And no matter which path Celia takes, she will discover that sometimes the past can come back to haunt you.

Top Five Ingredients to Beware of on Food Labels

INGREDIENT
COMMONLY FOUND IN
CONCERNS
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS)

Other names:
glucose-fructose syrup, isoglucose
soda/soft drinks, baked goods, candy, sauces, salad dressings, yogurt, cereals
HFCS is a sweetener created by processing corn sugar to increase the level of fructose to about 55 percent. It is rapidly absorbed causing an equally rapid spike in blood sugar. Research suggests that your body doesn’t process HFCS like regular sugar (sucrose), which means it doesn’t shut off your appetite center, causing you to overeat.  Your liver must convert HFCS to glucose, but when too much HFCS is consumed it gets stored as fat, contributing to obesity and fatty liver deposits. In addition, HFCS increases your triglyceride levels, LDL cholesterol levels, contributes to diabetes and metabolic syndrome, depresses your immune system and even accelerates the aging process.
Monosodum glutamate (MSG)

Other names: autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, gelatin, glutamate, glutamic acid, hydrolyzed protein, hydrolyzed vegetable protein,  monopotassium glutamate, sodium caseinate, textured protein, yeast extract, yeast food, yeast nutrient
Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups, processed meats, crackers, frozen dinners, chicken and beef broths, potato chips
MSG is a flavor enhancer added to thousands of foods commonly consumed every day. It is highly associated with short-term reactions such as headache, flushing, numbness or burning in the face and neck area, heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, difficulty breathing and weakness. MSG overstimulates the glutamine receptors in the brain, which enhances salty and sweet flavors. Some suggest that this overexcitement of glutamine receptors can cause cell death or damage and eventually declined cognitive function.
Trans fat

Other names: partially hydrogenated oils,
Fried foods, baked goods, potato chips, crackers, margarine, fast food, packaged foods, cookies, frozen foods, dips
Trans fat is a man-made fat used to enhance the flavor of and extend the shelf life of many foods. Research suggests it is more harmful than saturated fat. Trans fats increase LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels while lowering HDL cholesterol levels, which significantly increases the risk of heart disease and heart attack and stroke. It is also associated with an increased risk of developing type II diabetes.
Sodium Nitrite

Other names: sodium nitrate
Processed meats, hot dogs, sausage, bacon, beef jerky, deli meats, canned soups
A salty preservative used in some meats, sodium nitrite has been linked to certain cancers and heart disease. Research suggests that those who eat the most processed meat (known to contain sodium nitrite) have a greater risk of cancer and heart disease than people who eat red meat. During digestion, this ingredient combines with amino acids to form nitrosamines, which are very harmful to the liver and pancreas and highly carcinogenic.
Artificial Sweeteners

Other names: acesulfame potassium, aspartame, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, malitol, erythritol, isomalt, lactitol, hydrogenated starch, hydrolysate,
Soft drinks/soda, sugar-free gum, candy, yogurt, diet foods, many foods labeled sugar-free, snack bars, cereal
Artificial sweeteners are used in a variety of products to decrease caloric intake. However, evidence suggests that diet soda drinkers are more likely to become overweight, obese and have a larger waistline than those who drink full sugar soft drinks. Beyond obesity, artificial sweeteners are associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and kidney disorders. Some reports indicate that artificial sweeteners may cause gastrointestinal problems, allergic reactions, migraines, cancer, and kidney, liver and thyroid damage.

Baked Alaska by Josi S. Kilpack

An Alaskan cruise is the setting for amateur detective Sadie Hoffmillers latest adventure. Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. But even as the crew prepares to leave port, Sadie has suspicions about the voyage ahead and the relationship between her normally easygoing son and a mysterious female passenger he obviously knows but refuses to discuss. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

Praise for Baked Alaska
Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie's life wouldn't be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just "happens" and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie's character, even if she is a busybody, you can't help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. :)

Lexa Wright's Dating Sights by Rebeccah Giltrow

Welcome to Author Rebeccah Giltrow

Rebeccah is a writer by trade, with skills of varying degrees in knitting, baking, EFL teaching, performing, photography, dog-walking, sleeping, painting, and procrastinating. She always carries a red pen with her, in order to correct punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors that she finds on her travels.

Rebeccah has been a writer since she can remember, but after graduation from University of Essex in 2005 with B.A. (hons) English Language & Literature, and again in 2008 with M.A. Literature: Creative Writing, she decided to take the craft more seriously.

As well as writing, she regularly performs at the 'New Words, Fresh Voices' open mic night at The Seagull Theatre in Lowestoft, where she reads her poetry and short stories.

Rebeccah is an active member of Lowestoft Library Book Group and Lowestoft Library Writing Group. She has been attending these groups since 2009, and in September 2012 she set up a writing group for teen writers (aged between 11 and 17) at Lowestoft Library.

Rebeccah has recently taken up blogging, mainly about anything to do with the literary world. She interviews published and unpublished authors, and leaders of writing groups. These interviews can be found on her blog.

When she's not writing, Rebeccah enjoys producing visual art, and occasionally takes photos, paints pictures, and makes collages. Her work has been shown at The Halesworth Gallery, The Ferini Gallery, and Lowestoft Arts Centre.

Interview
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If you've ever wondered whether or not people can fall in love in real life like they do in films, you'll find your answer inLexa Wright's Dating Sights.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I absolutely loved Flossie Teacake's Fur Coat by Hunter Davies.  Many a time I wished I could put on a coat and transform into someone else.  I guess writing is the next best thing; I can be whoever I want to be through the words on the page.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
I didn't have any fantastic dreams of becoming an astronaut or Prime Minister when I was little.  All I wanted to be was a teacher.  I had an amazing teacher when I was at primary school called Mrs. Williamson.  She came to our school after teaching English in France, and I thought that sounded like the best job in the world.  I am a CELTA qualified teacher, and spent a few years teaching English as a foreign language, so I guess my dream did come true.

Now, I'm not so sure that I want to grow up!

Favorite Food?
Sushi.  I could eat maki and sashimi and nigiri until I exploded, as long as the fish was dead and there weren't any eyes still attached!

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Being English, I hope I'd get a million pounds.  And then I would buy every pair of Converse Chuck Taylors that I could find.  I absolutely love those shoes, and I desperately need to add to my collection!

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
Rebeccah, what's going on in there?
What's your favorite season/weather?
I love winter, but proper winter with the frost and the snow.  I love wrapping up in hats and scarves and wellies to take my dog for a walk, and hearing the crunch of fresh snow underfoot.  And then I love getting home, climbing inside a giant, snuggly jumper, and eating soup.

Favorite quote from a movie?
This comes from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Guy of Gisborne: Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?
Sheriff of Nottingham: Because it's dull, you twit. It'll hurt more!

This line always manages to make me laugh!

Do you prefer to write in silence or with music?
I always have to write with music on.  I don't have a certain genre or artiste that I prefer to listen to when I write.  I just put Winamp on shuffle and slip into 'the zone'.  I can't work in silence.  I find it too distracting!

How do you go about revising/editing?
I print out a copy of my manuscript and attack it with a red pen, sorting out typos, adding dialogue, changing vocabulary, etc.  Then I make the changes on the computer.  Once I'm happy with that, I print out the manuscript again and give that, along with a red pen, to my parents.  Dad checks for spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and Mum checks for plot holes and inconsistencies.  I repeat this process at least two times, and then I leave it for a while before red penning again.  Editing a manuscript should take more time than to write it.

What's your favorite word?
Can I have two?  Juxtapose and Procrastinate.

How do you overcome writer's block?
I write about it.  I have a number of poems and monologue rants about my struggles with the dreaded block.  If nothing else, it gets me writing.

Write a Haiku about your book

Which one will she choose?

Print or Ebook?
Print.  A book is supposed to be made of paper.  Part of the pleasure of reading is the turning of the page.  I know it's not particularly environmentally friendly, but you can't read a book if you're not actually holding a book.

Cats or Dog?
Dogs.  We've always had family dogs, and four years ago I got my own dog, Lily; a Jack Russel cross Lhasa Apso.  She's always a source of amusement, and she's inspired me to write dog characters into my stories.

Lexa Wright's Dating Sights

Alexana (Lexa) Wright is 30 years old, unemployed, single, and lives in her deceased, paternal grandmother’s bungalow, with her shi-tzu, Beryl. She is a self-confessed procrastinator and that isn’t a particularly positive trait to possess, especially when she is trying to write her first novel, which she intends to be a semi-fictional account of her own life. Unhappily single, Lexa hopes to eventually meet the man of her dreams by chance, like people do in films. Because of this, she has ignored her best friend Louise’s suggestions to join the online dating site, MatesDates. One day, Lexa turns on her computer to start writing her novel, but procrastination takes over and she spring cleans her e-mail inbox instead. She opens an e-mail from Louise, inviting her to try the dating site. Curious, Lexa joins and starts to fill in her profile. After a bad date, Louise visits Lexa and stays the night. Unable to sleep, Louise finishes Lexa’s MatesDates profile, unbeknownst to her friend, and sends out messages to men on her behalf. Lexa chats to one of these men online, Gregory, and arranges to meet him for a date. With her parents, Karen and Tom, dogsitting Beryl, Lexa meets Gregory at a local pub, with Louise and her colleague, Safa, sitting nearby for moral support. Cutting the date short to help his sister out of trouble, Gregory arranges another date with Lexa. The next day, Lexa collects Beryl from her parents’ house and takes her for a walk through the park on the way home. Beryl runs off, pulling her extending lead to its full length and tangles it around a man’s legs. Lexa offers to buy the man a coffee as an apology. The man introduces himself as William and asks her out on a date, and Lexa accepts. Lexa, not used to dating one man, has no idea what to do with two, but as everything seems casual, she continues to date both of them. Unable to choose between the two, she carries on seeing them both. She knows she has to choose one of them, but she can't make her mind up between them.

Excerpt

The clock on the wall in my study isn’t working.  It’s not that it’s broken; it just needs a new battery but I can’t be bothered to change it.  I’ll do it later.  According to this clock it’s nearly ten past eleven.  I watch the motionless hands as I start up my computer.  The familiar dah-dah-dah-dah tune belts out of my speakers.  I sing along.  The screen flickers and wakes up.  A drowsy eye opens to reveal a full screen desktop background of a photo montage of Beryl, my shih-tzu, at various stages throughout her three human year, twenty-one dog year, life.  The real life Beryl pads her way across the carpet and jumps onto the armchair by the window.  She pushes the cushion off with a shove of a paw and makes herself comfortable.  She knows she’s going to be there a while.  She scratches and claws at the material before pulling the hand-knitted throw from the head rest and wrapping it around her freshly coiffured body.  She stretches, yawns and falls asleep.
I turn back to my computer.  I open the document that I started yesterday, imaginatively entitled book.  It is here that I will write my masterpiece.  It’s going to be a semi-fictional account of my life.  I haven’t done many exciting things in my thirty human year, two-hundred-and-ten dog year life, but I’ve always been told to write what I know, and what do I know better than my own life?  A little bit of exaggeration here and there won’t hurt.  I mean, that’s what autobiographies are anyway, right?  I’ll just omit all the school bullying, adult heartbreak, and general death, destruction and decay, and replace it with, well, something nicer.
The page is blank.  The erect, black curser winks at me, flirtatiously.  ‘Come on, write something, make me … dirty,’ it says.  It licks its lips and winks some more.  I pull my hair back into a ponytail, flex my fingers and hover them over the keyboard.
I can’t write anything until I’ve chosen the font.  The font is very important when writing a book.  It can’t be too silly but it also can’t be too severe.  I scroll down the list, pondering the swirly, ye olde Englishe, Shakespearian-looking font.  It’s so pretty.  I type my name.  I can’t read it.  I enlarge it.  I still can’t read it, and I know what’s written there.  I reluctantly return to the pre-set font that appears whenever you open a document.  I suppose that will do for now.
Page numbers.  A book isn’t a book without page numbers.  I click the tab to insert page numbers.  Like with the fonts, there is so much choice; too much if you ask me.  Do I want the numbers on the left, in the middle or on the right?  Do I want them as digits or as words?  Do I want them at the top or the bottom of the page?  Bold?  Bracketed?  Underlined?  Under dots?  I settle on a clear Page 1 of 1, at the bottom, in the middle of the page.
I glance at the clock.  It’s still nearly ten past eleven.  Beryl is quietly snoring.  I open facebase and scroll through the list of banal status updates.  Jenny is boredNicola wants a bacon sandwichChris loves Lisa lots and lots and lots and lots and lots.  Bleurgh.  Marie is off to the dentist this afternoon.  Since when have I ever cared about these things?  Social networking for the anti-social.  I scroll down.  Max dont no wot 2 do wiv myself 2day so board.  Why do I stay friends with these people?  Bastian kommer aldrig att få sin avhandling klar.  I should really learn Swedish.  Torsten braucht einen Urlaub.  And German.  I’ll do that later.
