#BIR2010 - Book Giveaway: The Fablehaven Series by Brandon Mull

One of my family's absolute favorite book series is the Fablehaven Series by Brandon Mull.  From my 8 year old on up to me we all love this series!  I can't even count the number of times I've checked the books and audiobooks out of the library.  We almost always have at least one of the titles checked out.  The final book in the series was released in 2010.

Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Books in the New York Times bestselling Fablehaven series have more than one million copies in print and have been translated into eighteen languages worldwide.

Fablehaven is a secret nature preserve protecting the beings of myth and legend from the outside world. The current caretaker, Stan Sorenson, describes it as "a refuge for mystical creatures". Those who live in this large sanctuary, mortal and magical, must abide by a treaty of rules. The most common rules are focused upon "the law of the harvest" or "the law of retribution" meaning, you reap what you sow. If this law in the treaty is broken, you lose the magical protection it provides, allowing for retaliation, which is essentially what drives the plot through the first book. There also exist magical borders that keep most mystical creatures within the preserve, but out of certain domains. The caretaker's house and grounds are within one of these protective boundaries. However, some of these borders dissolve on certain nights, allowing frightening creatures to roam free on the grounds, one of which - Midsummer Eve - occurs in the first book.

There are 5 books in the Fablehaven Series:

Fablehaven (Fablehaven, #1)
Fablehaven
Rise of the Evening Star (Fablehaven, #2)

Keys to the Demon Prison by Brandon Mull

Since ancient times, the great demon prison Zzyzx has protected the world from the most dangerous servants of darkness, including Gorgrog, the Demon King. After centuries of plotting, the Sphinx is on the verge of recovering the five artifacts necessary to open the legendary prison. Facing the potential of a world-ending calamity, all friends of light must unite in a final effort to thwart the Sphinx s designs and find a safe home for the five artifacts. To this end, Kendra, Seth, and the Knights of the Dawn will venture far beyond the walls of Fablehaven to strange and exotic magical preserves across the globe, where the end of every quest becomes the beginning of another. In this explosive series finale, allegiances will be confirmed and secrets revealed as the forces of light and darkness collide in a desperate struggle to control the keys to the demon prison.

Keys to the Demon Prison is a fabulous end to the Fablehaven series. Lots of twists and turns. Starting the book I had a couple expectations. Expectations that were very similar to the expectations I had starting Harry Potter (Snape must be good, Ron & Hermione must end up together, Harry & Ginny must end up together). Thankfully all my expectations were met so I'm very happy with the book and its ending. My only complaint is that the series is over. I would love to have the chance to return to the world of Fablehaven.

And just a random thought: Love that the demon prison was named Zzyzx. Always makes me think of that oddly named exit off I-15 in Southern California. When we got to Zzyzx Road we knew we were almost home.

If you have not yet read the Fablehaven series you are missing out! Go read these books. I'm looking forward to more fantasy books by author Brandon Mull.

Content: A clean read. There is fantasy violence that may be a little much for younger kids. It didn't phase my 8 year old but many people do get hurt and killed. I wouldn't describe it as graphic violence but young readers beware.

Rating: 5 Stars to this fabulous end the the Fablehaven series.

Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary by Brandon Mull

Brace yourself for a shocking secret. Two hidden artifacts have been found. Three more remain unrecovered. More preserves face destruction as the Society of the Evening Star relentlessly pursues new talismans. Reading in Patton s Journal of Secrets, Kendra learns the location of the key to a vault housing one of the artifacts. In order to retrieve it, the Knights of the Dawn must enter a death trap a dragon sanctuary called Wyrmroost. The mission cannot proceed without stealing a sacred object zealously guarded by the centaurs. Anybody seen Seth? The race is on to acquire all five of the artifact keys to the great demon prison. Will the Knights of the Dawn conquer Wyrmroost? Who can stop the Sphinx? Can Vanessa be trusted to help? What artifact will be found next? Find out in Fablehaven: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary.

Fablehaven is such a fun series that keeps getting better with each book. Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary Series is the 4th book in the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull. This series is perfect for the whole family. My kids ages 8, 10 & 12 all love these books. The audio version is very entertaining to listen to. If you have not yet read this series I highly recommend you do!

Book 4 is packed full of adventure and mystery. I love when a book has twists and turns that I don't see coming and this book has them!

Content: A clean read! There is some content younger kids may find scary but my 8 year old has no problem with the mythical creatures & monsters in this series.

Rating 4.5 stars to book 4 in this fabulous series.

The Grip of the Shadow Plague by Brandon Mull

Kendra and Seth along with Grandpa and Grandma Sorenson discover that someone or something has released a plague that is turning the light creatures of Fablehaven into creatures of darkness. And for the first time, Kendra and Warren must visit another magical preserve called Lost Mesa in Arizona and try to recovery another hidden artifact. Can the plague be stopped? Can the artifact be found? And most importantly, is the Sphinx a traitor?

My children adore the Fablehaven series. I'm not sure how many times they have listened to these books. We seem to always have one title or another checked out and I'm constantly trying to track down missing CDs that are due back at the library. From all that listening they've done I've heard bits and pieces of the series but never listen to the entire thing. Glad I'm finally making the effort because this is a fabulous series.

I really am impressed with this series by Brandon Mull. The writing seems better with each book and the story has sucked me in. Looking forward to reading the last 2 books in the series. The Grip of the Shadow Plague is a great fantasy book filled with lots of mythical creatures, lots of adventure & mystery and characters I just can't help liking.

Content: This is a clean read. My 8, 10 & 12 year olds all love this series.

Rise of the Evening Star by Bradon Mull

At the end of the school year, Kendra and her brother, Seth, find themselves racing back to Fablehaven, a refuge for mythical and magical creatures. Grandpa Sorenson, the caretaker, invites three specialists- a potion master, a magical relics collector, and a mystical creature trapper- to help protect the property from the Society of the Evening Star, an ancient organization determined to infiltrate the preserve and steal a hidden artifact of great power. Time is running out. The Evening Star is storming the gates. If the artifact falls into the wrong hands, it could mean the downfall of other preserves and possibly the world. Will Kendra learn to use her fairy gifts in time? Will Seth stay out of trouble? Can they overcome paralyzing fear? Find out in book 2 of this bestselling series.

My 10 year old daughter describes Brandon Mull's Fablehaven series as the best books in the world. They are her favorite. I read the first book about 2 years ago but didn't continue with the series. I finally got around to listening to book 2 The Rise of the Evening Star.
This is a fabulous fantasy series for all ages. My library has these books cataloged as young adult but my children started listening to this series at age 6, 8 & 10 and have all loved these books. They have cross over appeal for an adult audience as well. Brandon Mull has created an incredible world of secrets for Kendra and Seth to discover at Fablehaven. Full of adventure and mystery this is a series to be enjoyed by all.
Content: This is a clean read. Being a fantasy book there are mythical creatures that could be considered scary by some but they didn't phase any of my kids.
Rating: 4.5 Stars. If you haven't yet read the Fablehaven series I suggest you give these wonderful books a try!
