Title: My Double Life
Author: Janette Rallison
Series: None
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Released: May 13, 2010

Book Summary
Her whole life, Alexia Garcia has been told that she looks just like pop star Kari Kingsley, and one day when Alexia's photo filters through the Internet, she's offered a job to be Kari's double. This would seem like the opportunity of a lifetime, but Alexia's mother has always warned her against celebrities.
Rebelliously, Alexia flies off to L.A. and gets immersed in a celebrity life. Not only does she have to get used to getting anything she wants, she romances the hottest lead singer on the charts, and finds out that her own father is a singing legend. Through it all, Alexia must stay true to herself, which is hard to do when you are pretending to be somebody else!
So Cute! I love escaping into Janette Rallison's books!  She creates great characters who despite their flaws actually have a moral compass and values.

My Double Life was a fun realistic fairy tale like story.  One of those books that makes you smile and laugh and sigh.  It's an upbeat and feel good story that can easily be read in an afternoon or evening.

If you are looking for a light-hearted, quick read with a great message you can't go wrong with My Double Life.

Series: Slayers Book 1 of ?
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date: September 27, 2011
Tags: Fantasy, Dragons,Young Adult

Dragons exist. They’re ferocious. And they’re smart: Before they were killed off by slayer-knights, they rendered a select group of eggs dormant, so their offspring would survive. Only a handful of people know about this, let alone believe it – these “Slayers” are descended from the original knights, and are now a diverse group of teens that includes Tori, a smart but spoiled senator’s daughter who didn’t sign up to save the world. The dragon eggs have fallen into the wrong hands. The Slayers must work together to stop the eggs from hatching. They will fight; they will fall in love. But will they survive?

Slayers is the first book in a new series by one of my favorite young adult authors. C.J. Hill is a pseudonym for author Janette Rallison. I've loved Janette's young adult romantic comedies and was excited that she has branched out into the fantasy genre.

Slayers is a great book I enjoyed reading.  This is a clean fantasy book that will appeal to a wide audience from tweens through adults.  C.J. Hill has created a unique breed of dragons and dragon slayers and written them into a fun story line.  I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Guest Post & Book Giveaway: Slayers by C.J. Hill

Welcome to Author C.J. Hill

Bio:
CJ Hill is a pen name for a YA author who is best known for writing romantic comedies. (Slayers will be her 18th published book.) Her writing has shifted away from the romantic comedy genre, so her editor thought a pen name would be a good idea. (New books will include: dangerous dragons, time travel to dystopian worlds, and flesh-eating beetles.) Since the publisher refused to let her have the pseudonym : The Artist Formerly Referred to as Princess, she chose a name to honor her mother. CJ Hill was her mother’s pen name, or at least it would have been if her mother had published. Her mother wrote a few children’s books and a middle grade novel but was taken by cancer before she had fully learned the craft.
(Most writers’ first novels aren’t publishable. CJ Junior’s first novel wasn’t, but somehow was published anyway. Now, even though it is out of print, it remains forever available on Amazon, where it taunts her with its badness. This was another good reason to use a pen name.)
CJ Hill has five children, three of whom like her on any given day depending on who is in trouble. She has lived in Arizona for the last half of her life, but is still in desert denial and hopes that one day her garden will grow silver bells and cockle shells or maybe just tomatoes.

I Spy C.J. Hill
Here is a photo of CJ Hill on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. The first scene of Slayers happens at the Jefferson Memorial, and after she sent it to her editor, she started to worry that a dragon actually could make his way through the columns. If this were the case, said dragon would munch on tourists, thus drastically changing how the prologue should have turned out.

CJ was so afraid of being mocked by thousands of Jefferson Memorial aficionados for not knowing how far the columns are away from each other, that on a recent trip she visited the memorial. As any dutiful author would, she stepped out the area between the columns to see if a dragon could squeeze through them. (And no, the scads of tourists around her didn't think she was odd for doing this.)

CJ is happy to report that the Jefferson Memorial is indeed dragon proof, which means you can all carry on, cavorting at the memorial without fear.

Unless of course, you take baby dragons into consideration. They're smaller but just as vicious.

Now does anyone not yet know who C.J. Hill really is? I didn't want to share if it was really supposed to be a secret. But if it was supposed to be a secret it was one of those "worst" kept secrets like that of I Am Number Four's author Pitacous Lore.  Everybody already seems to know who C.J. Hill is. A quick glance at C.J. Hill's blog makes it quite obvious that C.J. is really one of my favorite Young Adult authors: Janette Rallison.

So instead of starting this post off with a welcome to C.J. Hill perhaps I should have started it with...
Welcome back to Author Janette Rallison!

Janette is old. Don't ask how old, because it isn't polite. Let’s just say she's older than she’d like to be and leave it at that. Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five children and enough cats to classify her as "an eccentric cat lady." She did not do this on purpose. (The cats, that is; she had the children on purpose.) Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave. Not even the family's fearless little Westie dog can drive them off. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let's just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

Today C.J./ Janette in disguise is here to do a guest post on Love Triangles.

The Deliciousness and Drawbacks of Love Triangles.

It’s easy to see the appeal of love triangles. As readers, we live vicariously through the heroine—and who wouldn’t want to be pursued by two awesome guys? Really, the only thing that could be better is if one of the hot guys also told you that you’d won the lottery.

Having a love triangle keeps the reader guessing. The reader is never quite positive who will win the heroine in the end, so it adds a layer of tension to the plot. I raced through the last book of the Hunger Games to see if Katniss ended up with the guy I was rooting for. (Answer: yes, she did.)

That said, I’ve written a lot of books with romances in them (eighteen and counting) and Slayers is the first book that’s had a love triangle. Why? Because I hate to disappoint people I care about, even if they’re only fictional characters. True story: I have the start of a time travel manuscript with a love triangle in it. But I can’t finish it. As long as I never complete the story, then the heroine floats between the two heroes, loving both of them but never having to definitively choose one of them. Neither of the heroes is devastated because in an unfinished story, both of them still have a chance for happiness.

Oh, I know who she should end up with, but I like the other guy so much that in my mind I keep rewriting the ending , trying to find a way to make him happy too. Could I somehow throw in quantum physics and split the heroine in half so that each guy ends up with her? Could she continually travel back and forth through time so that she lives two lives? Maybe I could give her a twin sister . . .

You see my problem.

I’m afraid the love triangle in Slayers will prove just as difficult for me. I’ve already written plot outlines for the next two Slayers books. I gave them to my publisher when I submitted the manuscript. So I know who Tori is supposed to end up with. The problem is, I really like the other guy too. My teenage daughter likes the other guy so much that she keeps insisting that Tori has to end up with him. Which means if she ends up with the guy I intended, I’ll end up disappointing my daughter too.

And that in a nutshell is the problem with love triangles. People are going to be disappointed no matter who I choose—and either way, one of the people who is going to be disappointed is me.

Author Interview: Janette Rallison + Book Giveaway

I'm a day late on this book birthday... Yesterday was release day for My Unfair Godmother by Janette Rallison but I spent the day doing my taxes and completely spaced getting this post up.

I reviewed My Unfair Godmother last year and loved it.  You can read my review HERE.

My Unfair Godmother by Janette Rallison:
Tansy Miller has always felt that her divorced father has never had enough time for her. But mistakenly getting caught on the wrong side of the law wasn't exactly how she wanted to get his attention. Enter Chrysanthemum "Chrissy" Everstar, Tansy's fairy in shining, er, high heels. Chrissy is only a fair godmother, of course, so Tansy's three wishes don't exactly go according to plan. And if bringing Robin Hood to the twenty-first century isn't bad enough for Tansy, being transported back to the Middle Ages to deal with Rumpelstiltskin certainly is. She'll need the help of her blended family, her wits, and especially the cute police chief 's son to stop the gold-spinning story from spinning wildly out of control. Janette Rallison pulls out all the stops in this fresh, fun-filled follow-up to the popular My Fair Godmother.

To celebrate the release of My Unfair Godmother I have Janette here for an interview.

Interview:

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Reading my book will make you instantly popular and wealthy. (Well, you didn’t say I had to tell the truth. Fiction writers generally don’t. )

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I always have other books in the works. I have one called Slayers that’s coming out this fall and I’m working on two others. My goal is to one day write all the book ideas that are rattling around in my brain. Unfortunately I get new ideas faster than I can write them, so this might not happen unless some hot vampire decides to bite me and make me immortal. Hey—that would be a good plot idea. I’ll have to write that some day . . .

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I am too lazy to get dressed up every morning and drive to an office some place. Plus I like to read and call it work. When you add those two things together the only job I could possible do without getting fired is being an author. Or a well-read bag lady.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
The most rewarding experiences are the times that girls have told me that reading my books taught them to love reading. You can’t give an author a better compliment than that. I’m so blown away that I just stammer out a, “That’s great!” and then afterward feel like I should have said something profound instead.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world which would it be?
A romance, because then I’d always have hot guys around who loved me fervently, eternally—and with very little effort on my part. Plus they would tenderly touch my face and murmur lines that would make a poet stop and take note. Where else are you going to find guys like that?

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Magic by Selena Gomez (and Pilot) should be Chrysanthemum Everstar’s theme song. It is upbeat, bouncy, and about magic. Just like her. Granted, some of the lyrics make no sense.
Never been awake. Never seen a day break. Leaning on my pillow in the morning.
What exactly does that mean?
But lyrics and fairies don’t have to make sense so long as they are beautiful—and magic. Never believe it’s not so.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Get a degree in marketing. You’ll do way more of that then you ever thought.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I can see myself in all of my characters, which may actually be a symptom of schizophrenia. I try to see life with a bit of humor, as do most of my heroines. I’ve found myself in many embarrassing situations, as do most of my heroines. In fact, I’ve given a lot of them situations from my own life. I’ve also inserted myself into my novels as my heroine’s mother. Josi’s mom in Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Free Throws—totally me, right down to my double chocolate chip cookie recipe. On my bad days, the stepmom in How to Take the Ex Out of Ex-boyfriend is also me. When my editor first got the manuscript, he wrote, “Wow, this woman is a real witch.” I think about that sometimes.

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?

I suppose the answer to that is:  I think I can finish this book by (insert deadline).

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
My husband said, “You should marry me.” He was completely right. Best advice ever.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
Chocolate, because I can’t resist it. And whiny children because they suck the energy right out of me. Editors can be very kryptonitish too. Just when you’re thinking you’re talented and awesome they point out all your manuscript’s flaws.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
I’m sitting here pondering this question, and I’m really not sure. (A publicist? A maid?) I guess that’s a sign my life is pretty good. I already have everything I need--except for your blog readers devotion--but you can't buy that.

Boyfriends are supposed to be loyal, caring, and handsome. Giovanna's boyfriend, Jesse, has perfected the last two. Shouldn't the fact that Jesse is Giovanna's boyfriend count for something? So Giovanna dumps Jesse and becomes Dante's campaign manager. #BIR2010 - Book Giveaway: My Double Life by Janette Rallison + Interview

Welcome to author Janette Rallison.  Janette has written some of my favorite humorous, young adult books.  I've got a great interview and then a giveaway for her 2010 release My Double Life.

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Well, according to the latest novels (and we know authors are always right) the future is populated by dystopian societies that will do things like make you fight to the death in hunger games, choose your spouse for you, or put you in a deadly maze. Whereas the past was populated by numerous hot dukes, lords, and viscounts who were always looking for spunky heroines to settle down with. Taking that into consideration, I think I would visit the past.

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
That depends whether my choices were limited to the living or if I could invite the dead too. (Although really, the dead don’t usually make good dinner guests.) And really, it’s too hard to choose just five, because George Washington gets all bent out of shape if you invite Abraham Lincoln and not him. So I’ll tell you which five writers I’d choose to have to dinner. Jane Austin, James Herriot, J.M. Barry, Ellen Conford (she was my favorite author growing up) and Charles Dickens

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
A plane, a pilot, and a runway. But if escaping the island wasn’t part of the plan, I would want my husband, my laptop (so I could write) and a power source so my laptop didn’t die.

What is one book everyone should read?
Mine. Definitely. Just pick one—everybody should read it.

What is the last book you read?
Glen Beck’s The Christmas Sweater. I was on my way to a book event and listened to the CD in the car. Big Mistake. I started crying. As an author, you never want to show up to an event all teary eyed.

What is the last movie you watched?
Mega Mind—and yes, I did analyze the plot, the characterization, the theme, etc. You can’t help yourself when you’re an author. It’s a cute story though. Lots of funny lines, although it did make me wonder if society has stopped believing in heroes. (See, I told you I have to analyze everything.)

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I’ve always wanted to fly. Admittedly, it’s sort of a pointless superpower. I mean, besides not getting stuck in rush hour traffic, there are very few advantages to flying. (Plus you’d get a face-full of bugs, which is revolting.) But how cool would it be to go zooming around the sky? This may be why in an upcoming book (Slayers) I have a few characters who can fly.

When you were 12 years old what did you want to be when you grew up?
I did a school visit at my old junior high and the librarian there looked up my 8th grade yearbook. I wrote that I was going to be a writer. I was actually surprised when she told me. I had no idea at age 12 how hard it would be to achieve that goal. I guess it’s a good thing no one told me or I might have chosen something else.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate, but that’s only because you can never find black licorice flavored ice cream anywhere. I loved that as a child. Although, that flavor of ice cream may be one of those things that is better in memory than in actuality. Sort of like those 70’s and 80’s shows that I thought were so awesome. If by chance I see them now they all seem so cheesy.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
My mother. She died when I was six years old and I have very few memories of her. I’d like to know what she was like.

Which fictional character would you most like to meet?
My first inclination is to list some hot guy that I totally have a literary crush on. Darcy, Peeta—or even better, Apollo from the original Battlestar Gallactica series. (When I was 13 I wanted to marry him.) Of course, it probably wouldn’t be that thrilling to meet any of those guys since they were all in love with heroines who were not me. So maybe I should choose Sherlock Holmes. He could find my car keys when I lose them.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
My favorite thing is a huge spread of omelets, pancakes, and sausage. What I eat every day is bran cereal. That really says a lot about my life when you think about it. I won’t think about it, because if I did, I would get in my car and drive to Village Inn.

How many books do you read a week/month?
I listen to books on CD. When it’s my turn to drive carpool, I can go through four books in a week. But normally, I only go through one or two. As far as books that I actually sit down and read—I have a book that I read in spare moments, and I think I’ve been on the same one for a month.

Is there anything you need in order to write? (ie Chocolate, quiet, music)
When my kids were little, I could write anywhere, and I did. I took a notebook with me to soccer games, ballet lessons, and the park. I wrote on scraps of paper while I waited in the car and even wrote while nursing. Now that my kids are in school, I’ve gotten used to writing in the quiet and solitude of my room, and it’s very hard for me to write anywhere else. I get too distracted.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl. I’m always wide awake at 10:00 pm, 11:00 pm, and midnight no matter when I woke up. I have to force myself to go to sleep. And it’s always hard for me to get up in the morning. When the kids all graduate, I’ll probably stay up until 2:00 am every night and get up at 11:00 am.

One food you would never eat?
Anything that could be considered a pet. Like rabbit, guinea pigs, etc

Pet Peeves?
Waiting in long lines. (It feels like such wasted time.) In fact, anything that wastes my time becomes a pet peeve. This includes books that start out really good and then have horrible endings. Also, I don’t like books that bash religion and books that profess that safe sex means having the characters use a condom. One day I will just snap and starting yelling STD facts from my roof top. “One in six people have Herpes! It’s incurable, painful, and spreads even if you use a condom!! Ditto for HPV!!”
My homeowners association will probably not appreciate my rooftop rants.

Favortie Cartoon?
Superman. I’m pretty sure that one day he’ll dump Lois Lane and fly me off into the sunset.

If you could trade your life for that of a fictional character, who would that character be?
Good question. I was about to say Elizabeth Bennet, (Who wouldn’t want to live in Pemberley?) but then I recalled that whole no indoor plumbing or electricity problem. And Bella—well, she has two hot guys who love her, but also a bunch of vampires who keep trying to kill her. I guess when you come down to it, I’m pretty happy being me.

If you could go back in time and meet one author, who would it be and why?
Jane Austin because she had such a good sense of humor and she clearly was a romantic at heart. I think we’d get along.

What was the first book you read?
I don’t remember, but I do remember the first book I really loved was The Phantom Tollbooth. I still love that book.

If you could be a paranormal creature , what would you choose to be?
I’m writing a paranormal romance right now which is tentatively called, Hunters and Hunted. I would choose to be one of the Hunters. They have extra strength, x-ray vision, and they can leap great distances. It would be fun. I’ll have to wait and see if readers agree though.

If you could re-write the ending to a book written by someone else, what would it be?
It’s a tossup between Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins and Ptolemy’s Gate by Jonathan Stroud. I loved the first two books in both the Hunger Games and the Bartimaeus trilogy but was really disappointed in the third book of each series.

If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
Definitely the one we live in now. I wouldn’t ever want to live without all the modern conveniences. I shudder to think how long it would take to write a book if you didn’t have a computer. Can you imagine writing out a book by hand? Or having to retype it every time you made a change?

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
The next Narnia movie

Who is your favorite author?
Me. My books always end the way I want them too. Plus I amuse myself.

What kind of book do you read when you get sick?
I love romances. I devoured them as a teen. So I would try to find a good romance novel. Unfortunately, it’s hard for me to find a romance these days that isn’t waaaay too explicit. Seriously, some are so hot that they singe off your eyebrows when you turn the pages.

What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?
Gymnastics or figure skating because they’re both so graceful, beautiful and amazing to watch. I could care less about a bunch of men playing a game where they try to grab the ball away from each other. I mean, I don’t know any of the players, so why should I care who wins?
On the other hand, my oldest son played football and I got very enthusiastic about those games. So enthusiastic, in fact, that my teenage daughter was embarrassed because I was cheering so loudly.

Are you a loner or social butterfly?
Social butterfly. Although these days I feel more like a moth. I still get out, but I’m not nearly so pretty.

How do you react to a bad review?
I’ve never gotten a really horrible review but I have gotten some reviews where the reviewer clearly didn’t get the point of my book. If you read a romantic comedy and you have no sense of humor and don’t really like the romance genre, you’re not going to enjoy my books a whole lot. People who have a good sense of humor love them though, and I keep that in mind.

Which fictional character do you love to hate?
None. I think a really good villain is one you like, even though you’re routing for the hero to win the day. I’ve loved the movies The Prince of Egypt and The Ten Commandments for that reason. You feel for the character of Ramses in both those movies.

If it was the end of the world and you could only save 5 books , which ones would it be?
Five of mine, because hey, wouldn’t it be great to have a monopoly on books at the end of the world? (We have to do something when we’re not out fighting zombies)

If not a writer, you would have been?
I’d be an editor. Apparently I can’t keep away from books. Or maybe I just love telling people what to do, one of the two.

What do you do when you are in-between books?
I try to catch up on all of the things I put off because I was busy writing books. Things like painting the walls, calling the tree trimmers, and running errands. I also try to read a few books. It all sounds very glamorous, doesn’t it?

Book Review: My Unfair Godmother by Janette Rallison

I really enjoyed the first book in this series My Fair Godmother. It's unusual for a sequel to be better than the original book but Janette Rallison managed this amazing feat with My Unfair Godmother.

This book is cute, clean and fun. I laughed out loud more times than I can remember. The references Janette makes to popular culture are hysterical. References from everything from Twilight to popular music are sprinkled throughout. I'm not sure if this book was supposed to make me cry but there is one scene near the end were I had tears in my eyes.

Well done Janette! My Unfair Godmother is a hilarious twisted tale that combined elements from Robin Hood and Rumplestiltskin into one fabulous adventure. If you enjoyed My Fair Godmother I'm sure you'll love this one. It can be read as a stand alone but I highly recommend reading My Fair Godmother first.

My Unfair Godmother is scheduled for release on April 12. 2011.

Giveaway: 2 Books by Janette Rallison

I love Janette Rallison!

I've read 3 of her books this year and have the rest of her books on my to read list. Just One Wish is one of my favorite reads of 2010.

Her books are humorous, clean and just plain fun to read.

Here is a little bio taken from her website:

Janette Rallison is old.

Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn't have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let's just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

So funny! Doesn't she sound fabulous!

Janette has generously offered to send 2 readers of this blog a copy of one of her books.

Here's what's up for Grabs:
Fame, Glory and Other Things on My To Do List:

A PC school principal turns West Side Story into a comedy of errors.

Sixteen year-old Jessica dreams of Hollywood fame, and when Jordan moves into her small town, she dreams of him too. He’s a movie star’s son, and hey, he’s gorgeous to boot. Jordan has always wanted to get out from the shadow cast by his superstar father, but now that he and his mother have moved so far away from LA, how can he get his divorced parents back together? Jessica convinces Jordan the way to get his father to come for a long visit is to be a part of the school play. And if she’s “discovered” in the process, all the better. Things go wrong when she lets Jordan’s secret identity slip, and grow even more disastrous when the principal tries to change West Side Story into a gang-free, violence-free, politically correct production.

In the same romantic and sharply witty spirit of Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Free Throws, Janette Rallison delivers another comic gem that teen readers are sure to love.

How to Take the Ex out of Ex-boyfriend:

Boyfriends are supposed to be loyal, caring, and handsome. Giovanna's boyfriend, Jesse, has perfected the last two. But when her twin brother, Dante, runs for student body president, Jesse doesn't support Dante, choosing to campaign for his opponent instead. Shouldn't the fact that Jesse is Giovanna's boyfriend count for something? So Giovanna dumps Jesse and becomes Dante's campaign manager. But as the political debates heat up, Giovanna begins to regret breaking up with Jesse, and realizes that maybe her decision wasn't the political strategy she should have used . . . .

My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison

Finding your one true love can be a Grimm experience!
After her boyfriend dumps her for her older sister, sophomore Savannah Delano wishes she could find a true prince to take her to the prom. Enter Chrissy (Chrysanthemum) Everstar: Savannah’s gum-chewing, cell phone–carrying, high heel-wearing Fair Godmother. Showing why she’s only Fair—because she’s not a very good fairy student—Chrissy mistakenly sends Savannah back in time to the Middle Ages, first as Cinderella, then as Snow White. Finally she sends Tristan, a boy in Savannah’s class, back instead to turn him into her prom-worthy prince. When Savannah returns to the Middle Ages to save Tristan, they must team up to defeat a troll, a dragon, and the mysterious and undeniably sexy Black Knight. Laughs abound in this clever fairy tale twist from a master of romantic comedy.

I absolutely loved Janette Rallison's book Just One Wish. Being the fairytale lover that I am I decided to give her book My Fair Godmother a try. I shouldn't have been surprised that it was a delightful & totally entertaining read. This was a wonderful fractured fairytale with a teenage fairy who takes wishes quite literally.

Couldn't help but laugh at Rallison's humor including memoir elves who return to the magical realm with atrocious grammar and "write things in text message form (e.g., R U going 2 the mall?) and for no apparent reason occasionally call out the name Edward Cullen."

Content: Totally cute and clean! Nothing objectionable. My library shelved it as a young adult book but I would let my 10 year old read it.

Rating: 4.5 Stars. A great book by Janette Rallison.
