Book Giveaway & Author Interview: The Sweetest Thing by Christina Mandelski

Welcome to Author Christina Mandelski!

Bio:

I have a fondness for the beach,  my family and good books. I love to read (especially curled up with a good cup of coffee). I also like to travel, ride my bike, walk and go to the movies. When I’m not doing these things, I can be found in my little loft office, writing!

Growing up, I always had my face in a book, and at a pretty young age discovered that I also liked to write. At first I wrote romances that paired me and my friends up with certain pop stars from the 1980s. I moved on to the yearbook and newspaper staffs of my middle and high schools (which was great fun and I got out of class a lot).

In college I decided to get a degree in Creative Writing and many years later finally sat down and wrote my first novel for teens.  I love to write stories about family, finding your voice, faith, friends and falling in love.

Somewhere along the line I married a Cubs fan/math genius/funny guy and had two super cool daughters. We live in the Houston area with a half-house cat, half-cheetah named Spencer.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I’m a huge sucker for any story set during the turn of the last century. I imagine fabulous dresses, robber barons, romance, intrigue, dancing, heiresses and indoor plumbing. I won’t travel back to a time that doesn’t have a flush toilet.

What is one book everyone should read?
To Kill a Mockingbird. If you are a teenager, you might have read it or will soon in school. I beg you, don’t hate it just because it’s a school assignment. It’s a wonderful story, exciting, mysterious, and spectacularly written. If you’re an adult, and you haven’t lately, I recommend reading it again. What a timely story, imploring us to imagine what it’s like to walk in another person’s shoes.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
I would be Timestretcher because I’m forever longing for just a few more hours in the day.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Adding a few more hours to every day, of course. And my outfit would be fierce. Dark blue, I think, emblazoned with the face of a clock across my chest. I’d wear shiny white boots and a cape. I’d definitely have a cape.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Honestly, I’m not a huge ice cream fan (gasp!) but I will never refuse coffee ice cream. And if you mash up a Heath bar and mix it in, I’m yours.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
This might sound corny, but I’d meet Abe Lincoln. I spent ten years living in Springfield, Illinois, which he considered his “hometown”. I could see the obelisk that marked his tomb from my bedroom window. I learned a lot about him while living there and I’d love to sit down and ask him some questions.

One food you would never eat?
I despise pineapple in any form. And coconut. Please do not ever try to feed me a pineapple cake sprinkled with coconut. Thank you. My only hope is that I never land on a deserted island and those are the only two foods available to keep me alive.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
The most rewarding aspect of having a book published is knowing that my daughters (who are 11 and 13) watched me do it from start to finish. It was a long, sometimes difficult road and they were with me every step of the way – and now they see the goal I set for myself long ago actually coming to fruition. I hope they are inspired to work hard to meet their own goals as a result.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Absolutely. If you love it, and have the discipline to keep at it, don’t ever give up. If you have to write fifty manuscripts first, don’t give up hope that the fifty-first will be the one.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
From my earliest memories I wanted to be a writer. I loved books and how they transported me to different places and times and introduced me to characters I loved (or loved to hate). Now I get to read and write for my bread and butter. I still have to pinch myself occasionally to make sure I’m not dreaming. I also wanted to be a wife and mom, and happily, I get to do that too.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Definitely somebody very exciting, because I’m afraid the plot itself would be awfully boring! Seriously, how enticing is a movie where the main character sits at a computer for eight hours a day, drives the carpool and makes meatloaf for dinner? Yeah, you see what I mean. I’m thinking Julia Roberts might draw in enough viewers to keep it from being a total bomb?

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
People keep asking this question, and it’s a good question – but I keep answering that my mother gives me the best writing advice (and she’s going to start gloating soon). Honestly, though, my mother tells me on a regular basis to finish what I’m working on. That one word, FINISH, is the bane of many a writer’s existence. It can be painful to keep working on a draft that is getting sticky in the middle, it can be mentally draining to come up with a memorable ending. It can be very hard to finish! But whenever I start whining, Mom tells me to just hush up and finish. A book that is never finished NEVER gets published.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I have to say that I cannot wait for The Hunger Games to hit the big screen. That series really got to me – I’d love to meet Suzanne Collins one day. She is an expert at world building, plotting, character development, well, she’s just an expert at everything, I guess. I can’t wait to see how the story translates to the big screen. I’m prepared to be disappointed, but hope I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

What was your favorite children's book?
One of my favorite books was The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I read it over and over. Even today, it’s one of my favorite books.

How do you react to a bad review?
This is a great question! My first reaction was to want to crawl under a rock. Seriously, I hadn’t given much thought to bad reviews. Of course, I understood that my book wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of joe, but I didn’t seriously think they’d declare that to the world. Well, they do. And I survived. And I print out every good review and read them from time to time. Truth is, no matter what you write, someone will love it, and someone will hate it. The ones who love it are who you write for, and that’s what you’ve got to focus on.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be?
If I were a superhero, you could totally take me down with homemade key lime pie. Timestretcher loves her key lime pie.

The Sweetest Thing:
In the world of Sheridan Wells, life is perfect when she's decorating a cake. Unfortunately everything else is a complete mess: her mom ran off years ago, her dad is more interested in his restaurant, and the idea of a boyfriend is laughable.

But Sheridan is convinced finding her mom will solve all her problems - only her dad's about to get a cooking show in New York, which means her dream of a perfect family will be dashed.

Using just the right amount of romance, family drama, and cute boys, The Sweetest Thing will entice fans with its perfect mixture of girl-friendly ingredients.

The Sweetest Thing will be released on May 10, 2011

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher

Welcome to Author Cameron Stracher.

Bio:

Cameron Stracher was born and raised in Roslyn, Long Island. At a young age, he wanted to be a writer, and had his first play produced while an undergraduate at Amherst College. After college, he retreated to Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where he tried write the Great American Novel. Failing miserably, he enrolled at Harvard Law School, where he still managed to take a writing workshop from Mary Robison at Harvard College. He returned to Woods Hole after earning his J.D. degree, and was the only waiter at the Coonamessett Inn who was also admitted to the New York State bar. Finally, succumbing to parental and financial pressure, he got a real job at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C., where he lasted for one year before fleeing for the Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa.

He spent four years in Iowa City, studying under Frank Conroy, James Salter, Marilynne Robinson, Meg Wolitzer, and Deborah Eisenberg. More important, he met his wife, Christine Pakkala, a poet, while she was serving cheese samples at the food co-op. After Christine graduated, the couple moved to New York City where Cameron practiced law at Friedman & Kaplan, and then became in-house counsel at CBS, handling libel, privacy, copyright and other claims for the network. One of the highlights of his career during those years was getting Dan Rather out of jury duty.

Cameron won a fiction fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 1994, and his first novel, The Laws of Return, was published by William Morrow in 1996. His non-fiction account of his life as a law firm associate, Double Billing: A Young Lawyer's Tale of Greed, Sex, Lies, and a Swivel Chair, was also published by Morrow in 1998. He left CBS in 1999 and joined the media law firm Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, where he became partner and helped open the New York office. In 2001, he began teaching at New York Law School, and eventually became the Publisher of the Law Review and the Co-Director of the school's new Program in Law & Journalism. His second book of non-fiction, Dinner with Dad: How I Found My Way Back to the Family Table, was published by Random House in 2007. This summer Cameron left New York Law School to spend more time writing and with his family.

At present, he is Of Counsel to Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz, and has his own private practice where he counsels media clients like Hybrid Films, producer of the hit TV series Dog the Bounty Hunter, and Al Roker Entertainment, on newsgathering and publishing risks. He also handles all pre-publication review for Star magazine and all litigation for other American Media publications.

In addition to his books, Cameron has written for The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The American Lawyer (where he is a contributing editor), and many other publications. He is an avid runner, and is currently working on a book about the running boom and the 1970s for Random House, as well as on several YA projects. He lives in Westport, Connecticut, with his wife and two children, Simon and Lulu, for whom he wrote his YA debut novel, The Water Wars.

Interview:

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would definitely choose invisibility because I would want to see and hear what people were saying about me.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
My favorite thing is probably a cheese omelette with mushrooms and carmelized onions, but nearly every day I have 1/2 a peanut butter sandwich because I am a creature of habit, and I'm old enough to start worrying about my cholesterol.

Night owl, or early bird?
Used to be a night owl, but thanks to the miracles of caffeine I am now an early bird.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
My favorite book was Dune because I loved the world Frank Herbert created, and its mythological and political structure.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Read! Too many people want to write who don't have time to read. If you don't read, you can't write.

What is your favorite Quote?
"A foolish consistency is the hobgobblin of little minds."

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
I wanted to write a book about the end of the universe. And so I am.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
"Keep you day job."

How do you react to a bad review?
"Very badly."

What do you do in your free time?
Right now I am training to run a marathon in Vermont with my friend Keith. It will be the first marathon I've run since 1991, and only my third marathon ever. I hope I can finish.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
"Caffeine is My Only Friend."

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I bought a car. A green Volkswagen Passat.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
The Hannah Montana show.

The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher:

Welcome to a future where water is more precious than gold or oil-and worth killing for

Vera and her brother, Will, live in the shadow of the Great Panic, in a country that has collapsed from environmental catastrophe. Water is hoarded by governments, rivers are dammed, and clouds are sucked from the sky. But then Vera befriends Kai, who seems to have limitless access to fresh water. When Kai suddenly disappears, Vera and Will set off on a dangerous journey in search of him-pursued by pirates, a paramilitary group, and greedy corporations. Timely and eerily familiar, acclaimed author Cameron Stracher makes a stunning YA debut that's impossible to forget.

Blog Tour: Book Review - Compulsion by Heidi Ayarbe

Today has to be perfect.
Magic.
I look at the clock.
10:14 am.
Ten fourteen. One plus one is two plus four is six plus ten is sixteen minus one is fifteen minus two is thirteen. OK.
I turn from the clock and walk into the hallway. "Ready.”

Saturday will be the third state soccer championship in a row for Jake Martin. Three. A good number. Prime. With Jake on the field, Carson City High can’t lose, because Jake has the magic: a self-created protection generated by his obsession with prime numbers. It’s the magic that has every top soccer university recruiting Jake, the magic that keeps his family safe, and the magic that suppresses his anxiety attacks. But the magic is Jake’s prison, because getting it means his compulsions take over nearly every aspect of his life.

Jake’s convinced the magic will be permanent after Saturday, the perfect day, when every prime has converged. Once the game is over, he won’t have to rely on his sister, Kasey, to concoct excuses for his odd rituals. His dad will stop treating him like he is some freak. Maybe he’ll even make a friend other than Luc.

But what if it doesn’t work?

What if the numbers never go away?

Acclaimed author Heidi Ayarbe has created an honest and riveting portrait of a teen struggling with obsessive compulsive disorder in this courageous and breathtaking novel

This won't be much of a review because it is difficult to fairly review a book I couldn't finish. I signed up to review this book through The Teen Book Scene's Blog Tours. The synopsis of the book fascinated me since I have a son who has had some obsessive behaviors around studying math.  I read a few reviews that were very positive and it sounded like a book I would enjoy so I signed up for the tour.

Unfortunately the reviews I read failed to mention the amount of language in this book. I've not come across a book with as much language as this one had in it.  I'm a little surprised this is being marketed to teenagers grade 9 and up. Being someone who generally speaking chooses book that are free from graphic sex, gratuitous violence and strong language this book was one I just couldn't keep reading.  I'm very sensitive when it comes to language in literature.  I tried skipping ahead a few chapters but it was more of the same which was really disappointing to me because without the language this is a book I would like to have been able to finish. So reader beware there is a lot of strong language in this book including dozens of uses of the F word in just the first chapter.

On a positive note here is a really cool thing about Compulsion.  The main character has an obsession with prime numbers.... Thus the chapters are all prime numbers, there is no chapter 1, 4, 6, 8, etc.  The portions of the book I did read were eye-opening for understanding what life is like for someone suffering from OCDs.

Blog Tour: Book Review - Depth of Deceit by Betty Briggs

How does an intelligent woman find herself mired in a web of deception, abuse, and danger? In Depth of Deceit, author Betty Briggs pulls her readers into the life of Stephanie Saunders, a lovely young attorney with a big heart, keen mind, and a trust in others that nearly proves disastrous. Her handsome and wealthy boyfriend strikes her as perfect, but is he too good to be true? Her boss hovers around her like a protector and friend, but is he? Stephanie’s work focuses on defending the indigent, and one client earns her trust and friendship, but why is he showing up at the oddest places? It seems that she can trust only the horses she trains and loves, magnificent beasts who remind her of life’s purposes and meaning. In a dramatic turn of events, Stephanie must make a decision that will affect her life forever. While fans of the author’s earlier novels will be thrilled to discover a familiar character, this novel stands alone in plot and dramatic impact.

Given the title of this book I was on alert from page one and had trouble trusting any of the characters assuming they were all deceiving the main character Stephanie. I was pulled in to a web of lies and deceit in this well told mystery. Although I guessed from the start who could be trusted, the book kept me turning the pages to the end to figure out just how deep the deceit went and how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Although I would classify some of the subject matter in this book as "adult" in nature, I would still consider it to be a clean read with nothing graphic, no language, no sex scene.

There were a couple plot points I had trouble buying... such as a lawyer not knowing how to use the Internet to do a background check... but those implausibilities didn't deter me from enjoying the storyline. I enjoyed the ending of this book. So many books end too quickly. There were still 50 pages left to wrap everything up after the book hit the climax which left plenty of time to answer all the questions I had and left me satisfied with the story. I'll definitely be adding another one of Betty Briggs' books to my to read list.

Blog Tour: Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway: Odessa (The Seraphym Wars) by Rebecca Ryals Russell

She is a fourth generation Floridian. She was born in Gainesville, grew up in Sunrise, lived in Orlando and Jacksonville before moving outside Lake City to care for ailing parents. The family now wishes to return to Jacksonville, which is why the house is for sale. (http://mcleranhouse.com/)

She had several students’ works published in anthologies as well as her own poetry, photography and stories. Her main interests are her four children ages 22, 19, 16, 11 and Irish hubby of 35 years. She enjoys spending her time writing, drawing, going to movies, reading, discussing philosophy with her 16-year-old son.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Future. I can read about what has happened, but no one can predict the future.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Grits with bacon. We call it Southern Ice Cream.

Night owl, or early bird?
Use to be early bird because I had to be at school by 7 am. Now I’m up until 2 or 3 am writing.

One food you would never eat?
Any kind of spider. I had a phobia for many years because a Wolf Spider the size of a baseball ran up my leg underneath my jeans while in Spanish class in high school. I flipped my leg up, wooden clog flying across the room, and spider too. I can finally look at them and have some pretty awesome photos, but don’t bring one near to touching me.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Odessa is filled with bad-ass characters facing insurmountable odds in impossible situations against horrifying antagonists in a fantastic adventure bordering on truth.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Lots of things. I’m doing what I think is a novel idea. I took the concept of Dracwald, from Seraphym Wars Series, the evil dragons and such, and rewrote the story for Middle Grade readers, with age-appropriate characters and situations. The series is called Stardust Warriors.
Zarena comes out July 2011; Jeremiah in September 2011; Laman in February 2012; Mercy April 2012 and Magaelbash June 2012. There will be many more written.
I’m also working on a lower Middle Grade (2-3 grade) series about a 13-year-old witch and her cat who was once a 13-year-old girl who was orphaned and accidentally became a cat. They go on adventures through time and space together. This series will be geared for the classroom with teacher’s guides. And during the November NaNoWriMo event, I wrote 2/3 of a Dystopian YA Romance. I hope to have it finished soon. There are several more ponies in my stable, so to speak. Readers can see everything I’m working on at my website The Official Website of Rebecca Ryals Russell, Author.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Athena, goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavor, handicrafts and reason. She is totally bad-ass and everything I would love to be. (While typing this, my 11-year-old son who is reading the Percy Jackson series read over my shoulder and said, “That’s you. I can see you being Athena.” – Yay!)

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
We’ve always wanted a summer home in Ireland. My husband was born and raised in Kilkee, Ireland and I’ve been back with him about 5 times. It’s so beautiful and the cliffs and roaring surf so peaceful. I can easily picture myself overlooking the Atlantic and writing away.

What is your favorite Quote?
Einstein-“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” I had that up in every classroom I ever taught in.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
#1 A used car for my new driver, my son.
#2 A condo for my travel-weary husband to use several nights a week instead of driving 80 miles home every night. For the past 7 years he’s driven from Lake City to Jacksonville because we moved to care for my father after my mother passed away. Now he’s been gone for 3 years, but the housing market collapsed.

What's your favorite season/weather?
My favorite times or year are Early Spring, while there is no humidity, the breeze is brisk and chilly and Late Autumn for the same reason. We all sit on the front porch of our1909 Victorian home and chat, drink beer and smoke cigars (well, maybe not the kids). I love those times.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Didn’t even have to think about this answer. JK Rowling.

Myrna Ashlin Watts is a high school Senior in Jacksonville, Fl when she is transported to a bizarre and primal planet corrupted by demon-dragons. And they want her DEAD. Her problem is, she has been recruited to kill them, too.
Reluctantly, and knowing it is her only way to get back home, she agrees to lead an army of six teens called The Vigorios- battling dragons and monsters while crossing swamps and mountains, forests and seas. She wrangles with mental scars of a demon attack when she was 16 and receiving a vision of those same demons killing her brother 2 years later. Three very different men join her quest—a seasoned demon/dragon-slayer who irritates but beguiles her, a tender and sweet mentor in whom she trusts completely and a roguishly handsome Scientist who sets her senses aflame. How is she expected to lead the others and keep everyone safe with so much inner turmoil? Whom can she trust, if anyone, even herself? How can anyone expect her to be a leader? Much less one who leads an army of kids in a Holy battle?
Will love and lust, jealousy, greed, deceit and distrust break the delicate tie that binds these teen warriors called The Vigorios? Can a troupe of teens help the Seraphym finally defeat the massive empire of evil dominated for eons by the demon-dragons of Dracwald?

Blog Tour: Guest Post - Girl Wonder by Alexa Martin

Welcome to Author Alexa Martin

Bio:

Alexa Martin holds an MFA in Writing and Literature from the Bennington Writing Seminars. She lives near Seattle and complains about the weather a lot although she secretly likes the rain (don't tell!) For fun and torture she runs long distances on muddy mountain trails. Over the years she's worked a lot of random jobs in trying to keep the writing dream alive, such as the time she worked in a steakhouse even though she's a vegetarian. Initially GIRL WONDER was about a story about a horse, which just goes to show you that art is what happens when you are making other plans.

http://www.alexamartin.com/index.html

When I'm Not Writing:
Talking about your hobbies, etc and what you do when you aren't writing.

Probably the number one thing that people associate me with is trail running. It's my favorite thing to do, and nothing makes me feel so much like a kid as flying down mountain trails and getting muddy and sweaty. I switched to trail running about five years ago after an orthopedist told me that I should never run for more than an hour. Six months later I ran a fifty kilometer trail race injury free. Trail running is so much better for your body than pounding the pavement.

Here's a picture of me at a recent trail race (the Orcas Island 25K)--I don't know why I'm smiling, since the course was really tough! http://www.pbase.com/gtach/image/132350322

I love turning non-runners into runners and I'm good at it, since I was once a non-runner myself. I understand the excuses that people make for why they don't run. I understand how it feels to be afraid that you're going to hold everyone back. I understand that you're worried that you're going to look stupid (you won't, fyi). I also know that you secretly WANT to be a runner, even if you don't know it yet, and since I'm the daughter of a psychiatrist I'm pretty good at breaking down people's mental barriers. If you hang out with me for more than a minute there's a good change that you'll be running your first half marathon sooner than later. Consider yourself warned!

I have an all-gals trail running group called the Dirty Girls, which is open to any female of any ability level as long as you don't mind getting a little muddy and a lot wet (if you live in the Pacific Northwest, like I do, you have to make friends with rain and mud). My proudest moment recently was watching two friends who always have perfect hair and perfect clothes run through their first giant mud-puddle. They had so much fun, and I was so proud of them.

I love hanging out with my family and friends. I love going to movies, and I'm always on the lookout for something good to watch so feel free to tell me your favorites! My favorite meal of the day is breakfast, and I'm a sucker for scones. I think rasperberries are the perfect fruit, and I'm addicted to my morning cup of coffee (or, as I'm often teased, my morning cup of sugar and cream with a little coffee added).

Now tell me a few of YOUR favorite things!

Girl Wonder by Alexa Martin:

As if transferring senior year weren't hard enough, Charlotte Locke has been bumped to lower level classes at her new school. With no friends, a terrible math SAT score, and looming college application deadlines, the future is starting to seem like an oncoming train for which she has no ticket.

Then Amanda enters her orbit like a hot-pink meteor, offering Charlotte a ticket to something else: popularity. Amanda is fearless, beautiful, brilliant, and rich. As her new side kick, Charlotte is brought into the elite clique of the debate team—and closer to Neal, Amanda's equally brilliant friend and the most perfect boy Charlotte has ever seen.

But just when senior year is looking up, Charlotte’s life starts to crumble. The more things heat up between Charlotte and Neal, the more Neal wants to hide their relationship. Is he ashamed? Meanwhile, Amanda is starting to act strangely competitive, and she's keeping a secret Charlotte doesn't want to know.

Talented newcomer Alexa Martin delivers a poignant story of first love, jealousy and friendship, where the ups and downs of senior year have never been so complicated. What else can Charlotte do but throw her hands up and ride?

Book Review: Flavors by Emily Sue Harvey

Flavors by Emily Sue Harvey:

Emily Sue Harvey’s first novel, Song of Renewal, was praised by New York Times bestselling author Jill Marie Landis as “an uplifting, heartwarming story,” by bestselling author Kay Allenbaugh as a work that will “linger in the memory long after readers put it aside,” and by Coffee Time Romance as “a must-read book for anyone doing a little soul searching.” New York Times bestselling author Steve Berry said, “It captures your attention, and whets your appetite for more,” while Peeking between the Pages called it “quite simply a beautiful book.”

Now, in Flavors, this master storyteller of the human heart sweeps us along with twelve-year-old Sadie Ann Melton as she enters a life-altering season. The summer of 1950 will change everything for her. For in that summer, she will embark on an odyssey at once heartbreakingly tender and crushingly brutal. At times, she will experience more darkness than she has ever witnessed before. At others, she will thrill to lightness and joy she never imagined. By summer’s end, the Melton women in Sadie’s journey – loving her, coaxing her, and commanding her – will help shape her into the woman she becomes. And they will expose Sadie to all of the flavors of life as she savors the world that she brings into being.

Filled with charm, wisdom, and the smorgasbord of emotions that comes with the first steps into adulthood, Flavors once again proves Emily Sue Harvey’s unique ability to touch our souls with her unforgettable stories.

This one started off really slow for me.  It took me several attempts to get through the first 20 pages.  I found myself skimming and just not caring about it, wondering why I had agreed to review it.  However once I was 20 pages in I stopped skimming and started enjoying the story.

This had a memoir - remembering the past feel to it.  The book takes place over the course of a summer and is the recollections of twelve year old Sadie.  I saw this categorized as young adult on someones goodread shelf but think that is inaccurate.  The way it is written seems to be a book aimed at adults looking back at the good old days with a sense of nostalgia.

A heartfelt touching story of love and loss.

Author Interview & Ebook Giveaway: Two Lives... One Diary by J.M. Array

Wlecome to Author JM Array

Bio:
I am a 21 year old from Puerto Rico. I am currently in College studying Computer Science. I should graduate by May 2012. My dream job would be to work at Google or Microsoft. That’s one of my dreams. Cause another one would be to be able to work full time from my home, be it writing or doing multiple other projects, or maybe a combination of both.

Right now I am trying to get my writing career started. I love writing and when I do, the whole world around me stops and I get emerged within the story to such a point that the story just writes itself, it is like a world of its own.

Interview:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Definitely to the future. I am a fan of technology, so see the technology of 20-40 years in the future would be just amazing. Then again, if I have to come back I would be depressed with what I have in my present time after experiencing such a beauty (hopefully a beauty).

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Derek Jeter, Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde

What is one book everyone should read?
Mine? Nah just kidding (sort of). I think one of my top favorite books of all time is: The Time Traveler's Wife

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
You know, superhero names aren't that creative. So I will follow the trend and say: TimeMan

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Time Manipulation (be it to time travel or to just stop it)

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate :)

Night owl, or early bird?
Night Owl by far.

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&Ms. Chocolate lover here!

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If you have been looking for a unique and fast read, then this is it.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I am actually re-writing a book I wrote 4 years ago. We will see how that one goes. I also have an idea for a sequel to that one, so hopefully I can develop it. Apart from that, I have a few other ideas I want to develop. My ultimate goal would be for one of the books to be made into a movie.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I am always coming up with crazy ideas. They just pop out of no where. And one day I just decided I wanted to put in paper. Tell a story based in that idea. And that's how I started :). It gets addictive after that.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Definitely the reaction from those that have read it. Seeing how much they have actually enjoyed it, is pretty darn rewarding.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Write, write and write. That's the only way that you are going to improve and that's the only way you are going to get your stuff out there. Don't be afraid to break the mold either. Do something new and different. See what happens!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
New York City, New York...aka Manhattan :). I am a hardcore Yankee fan plus I just love that city!

What is your favorite Quote?
"That knowing is better than wondering, that waking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure, even the worst, beat the hell out of never trying"

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
I wanted to be a professional baseball player. The yankees second baseman!

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Dan Brown

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yeah, from Two Lives...One Diary, I can see myself as Robert. He is basically me actually.

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
This is an interesting question...I could tell you, but I would probably have to kill you so you don't steal it :P.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Look both sides when crossing the street. No but really, something my mother has always told me is to just follow my dream, to trust myself against everything and just fight for what I want.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
Right now? Probably an iPad 2 and/or a Macbook Pro.

What do you do in your free time?
Hang out with my friends, watch movies/tv shows, read a lot in the internet, write, and sleep.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
Dan Brown definitely. His ability to research and mix that which is fiction with what isn't, is just amazing. Leaves you wondering...I love leaving readers wondering.

Two Lives... One Diary Book Synopsis:
Robert has never had a dream before. On his 18th birthday everything changes and he starts to dream. Because this is an unusual experience for him, he decides to start a dream-diary. Soon after that, he realizes that his dreams are directly connected to his real life. Suddenly, he finds himself living two lives…yet he only has one simple diary.

Book Giveaway & Author Interview: Future Glimpse by Melanie Nelson

Welcome to Author Melanie Nelson!
Bio:

Melanie lives in Nampa, Idaho. She has a genius four year old boy, and the cutest baby girl alive. Melanie was homeschooled with her five siblings, and later went on to study at Brigham Young University Idaho. Although her declared major was psychology, she only took one psych class. Instead she took as many English and Literature courses as she could justify. She doesn't love writing as much as having written something.

Interview:

Night owl, or early bird?
I'm the night owl who wishes it were an early bird.

Pet Peeves?
I hate driving behind someone who doesn't go the speed limit. Another is the confusion between a Democracy and a Republic. The United States is a Republic, but is most often referred to as a Democracy, and it drives me nuts!

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I'm currently about half way through a fantasy novel for kids. I'm excited about it, and think readers will really like it.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
There are so many answers to this one, but I think the world of Harry Potter has it topped. Post Voldemort, that is. Come on, who wouldn't want to have a magic wand, ride a broomstick, and eat magical candy?

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
One of my childhood favorites is Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson. I still love it.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Right where I am. Rather, where ever my family is. Ideally, it would be a country setting, with trees, mountains, water, and lots of family.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
Every time I was asked the question, I would answer that I wanted to be a mommy. Sure, I had grand aspirations to be an actress, or maybe a grocery store clerk, but first and foremost, I wanted to be a mother. That hasn't changed; except the part about the grocery store clerk.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
I have lots. Katherine Paterson, Jane Austen, Chris Heimerdinger, Orson Scott Card, the Bronte sisters, Harper Lee, just to name a few.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
My main character, Karen, probably inherited a lot of my characteristics and view points.

Hidden talent?
Foosball. I've never played anyone that I can't beat.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I really look forward to seeing the last installment of Harry Potter. I'm a big fan of the books, and the movies are fun too.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I am a closet Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. Secret's out.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....
Jacob Have I Loved. It's also by Katherine Paterson. She has an extraordinary talent of bringing out your emotions, and making her characters relate-able. I've never been a lesser-loved twin, but I feel like I know what it's like, because of the book. Amazing.

Future Glimpse by Melanie Nelson:

Karen’s strange new life starts when wakes up in a strange place, with a strange man, and wearing strange clothes. The image she sees in a mirror reflects an older version of herself. When she learns that she is no longer seventeen years old, but twenty-two, her family determines that she has amnesia. It doesn’t take Karen long to realize that the truth is much more disconcerting; she shifts through time. While she was five years into her future, an older Karen had taken her place as a seventeen year old. Although the shifts were never predictable, a frightening change occurs when they become new and unknown to even the future Karen. Not only is time behaving erratically, the lives of Karen’s future family are in mortal danger and only she can prevent a tragic outcome.
