Which authors have influenced you?
Robin Cook and Michael Crichton have always been favorites.  When you look at the variety of exciting ideas they’ve put forth over their careers its pretty exciting.   The late Michael Crichton wrote in numerous genres and really was at the cutting edge of how science meets literature.

When Arkansas experiences a wave of rare fatal diseases, the CDC sends disgraced doctor Dave Richards to investigate, and he knows this is the case that could save his career. When he teams up with FBI agent Paula Mushari, Richards thinks he may have found the person who can help him find the answers. But as they dig deeper, they begin to get a sinister glimpse into what they are dealing with—a vengeful sect, led by the son of a late white supremacist, intent on destroying a nation. As Richards fights to save his job, he and Mushari must race against the clock to prevent a plague of catastrophic proportions.

Blog Tour: Guest Post - Flying Blind by Deborah Cooke

Welcome to Author Deborah Cooke!

Bio:

Deborah Cooke has always been fascinated with dragons, although she has never understood why they have to be the bad guys. She has an honours degree in history, with a focus on medieval studies. She is an avid reader of medieval vernacular literature, fairy tales and fantasy novels, and has written over forty romance novels and novellas. She has also been published under the names Claire Cross and Claire Delacroix.
Deborah makes her home in Canada with her husband. When she isn't writing, she can be found knitting, sewing or hunting for vintage patterns.

Guest Post:
10 reasons why it's great to be the Wyvern - by Zoë Sorensson

1. In the world of Dragonfire - which would be my world - the Wyvern is the only female dragon shape shifter.
2. The Wyvern is supposed to have an extra bonus pack of powers, beyond those of the other dragon shifters. It's good to be special.
3. All dragon shifters can breathe fire. It is truly awesome to have an Incinerate Now list and be able to act upon it.
4. The Wyvern is a prophetess, who can see past, present and future simultaneously. (Still working on that.)
5. All dragon shifters can breathe dragonsmoke, which is a territory mark that other dragon shifters can't cross without permission.
6. The Wyvern can dispatch dreams. (And there are several people - okay ONE - I'd like to make dream about me. Working on it.)
7. The Wyvern can take additional shapes. She can shift shape to a salamander, as well as to a human and a dragon. (Salamanders are small and somewhat icky, but size means they can hide out better than dragons can.)
8. The Wyvern gets to hang out with bunches of really hot dragon guys - and be the only girl dragon. (Eye candy city. Trust me.)
9. The Wyvern can spontaneously manifest in other locations. This means she can move from one side of a dragonsmoke barrier to the other, without actually crossing it. This, as you might imagine, is very useful.
10. All dragon shifters can FLY! Woo HOO!

Flying Blind by Deborah Cooke:

The next generation of shape-shifting dragons from the popular author of the Dragonfire novels.
Zoë Sorensson is perfectly normal, except she's been told she's destined for great things. Zoë's the one female dragon shapeshifter of her kind. But Zoë is at the bottom of the class when it comes to being Pyr and her powers are AWOL, so she's sent to a Pyr boot camp.
Zoë quickly realizes that she has to master her powers yesterday, because the Pyr are in danger and boot camp is a trap. The Mages want to eliminate all shifters and the Pyr are next in line-unless Zoë and her friends can work together and save their own kind.

Journals of the Big Mouth Bass:

You’re invited to a front-row seat to the 1960s and sunny southern California where winters are mild, summers are hot, and kids find their way into all sorts of trouble. Join the fun as Debbie lives up to her unfortunate nickname and shares the trials and tribulations of growing up. From trying to be more girly (and failing miserably) to exciting adventures with her brother and the neighborhood kids, to facing humiliation at school, Keeping Secrets is a heartwarming, funny, and very real book about growing up female.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Not Just for Breakfast Anymore by PV Lundqvist

Welcome to Author PV Lundqvist:

Bio:
Father of three, loves his family, pot-bellied pigs, and baseball — in that order. PV Lundqvist is his nom de 'net. Has a Master's in Creative Writing from Emerson, member of SCBWI, and a former social worker. Blogs about his life and his writing.

INTERVIEW:

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
To find out whether twelve-year-old Benny will face his bully or get kicked out of town, all because of a pet he didn't ask for.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Well-oiled baseball glove, a ball, and cap. Then I'd challenge the next island to a game.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
A reader wrote me about how much he enjoyed reading my book to his young son. But, he asked me, could I please explain to his child why they can't have a pig in an apartment! Priceless.

What is your favorite Quote?
“Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.” Goethe

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
David Spade. I'm constantly being mistake for him. At my brother's wedding, a member of the bride's family actually asked for my autograph.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
The main character is a boy with a 'funny name'. He cringes whenever roll is called in school. That's me.

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Don't get depressed, get busy.

Which authors have influence you most how?
Jack Gantos. He uses voice so well to tell stories—not about characters—but through them. Their eyes.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I have a YA book coming out soon. It is about a high school forced to become part reality TV and part social experiment. And before the end, a senior has to decide between the love of his girlfriend and what he thinks is right. I'll let you know when it's available.

Not Just for Breakfast Anymore:

Benny wants a pet-a dog or a cat. You know, the kind of pet every else has. But other kids don't have his mom. She likes to do things differently. So Benny doesn't know what to expect when he first opens the pet carrier. Certainly not that his neighbors will want to kick his family out of town-he just got here! And he was just about to make the baseball team, too. Will he fight for his pet or back down?

Book Giveaway & Author Interview: The Immortality Virus by Christine Amsden

Welcome to Author Christine Amsden

Bio:

Christine Amsden has been writing science fiction and fantasy for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.
At the age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition that effects the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams.
Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. They have two beautiful children, Drake and Celeste.

INTERVIEW:

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Do I have to choose only one direction? I'd love to see it all, but if I have to pick only one, I would probably go into the past. The future always has possibilities, and it is whatever we make of it, so I could never see more than one possible future anyway. In the past, however; I could discover truths lost forever to time and bias.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
My husband, the wreckage of the boat that left us there, and some tools so he can fix the motor while I work on making it float again. The idea of being alone for an indefinite length of time is probably the worst fate I could imagine. Even if my husband and I couldn't get that boat seaworthy again, we would at least have each other.

What is one book everyone should read?
I have never met a book that I think everyone should read. I've read books that I loved, that I would share with the world if I could, but I also recognize the extremes of human preference. That is the reason why, at the bottom of most of my reviews, I recommend books “To those who like such and such...” When I love a book, one of the first things I often do is go to goodreads and read the 1-star reviews, to help me imagine why someone else might hate what I loved. It is sometimes entertaining, often aggravating, but always an illuminating exercise.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Flying would be the most fun, but in the end, I'd have to go with teleportation, even if it didn't give me quite the same thrill to use, because it would be so incredibly useful.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate chip cookie dough, because it doesn't make me feel quite as guilty as eating regular cookie dough.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
French toast topped with warm, lightly sugared berries.

Night owl, or early bird?
You'd better catch me in the afternoon, actually. In college, my friends used to have fun with me at breakfast, trying to get my sluggish brain to boot up properly. When it's too close to bedtime, I sometimes get grumpy, and then, if I get a second wind, I just get silly.

One food you would never eat?
Fugu (Japanesse blow fish – deadly if prepared wrong). I'm very open-minded about food, and pride myself on the idea that I will try anything at least once, but I have to draw the line if it might kill me.

Skittles or M&Ms?
Neither, which probably means I shouldn't answer this question, but I had to confess – I'm a chocolate snob! Or, I suppose, a candy snob, but the other has a nicer ring to it.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
If the cost of eternal youth grew too high, would you give up your shot at immortality?

Any other books in the works?
Yes, lots of them. I currently have a four-book urban fantasy series (mostly finished) that I am shopping around and hope to see settled into a home soon. I absolutely fell in love with my heroine in that project. Plus, right now I am working on a new romantic fantasy novel.

Goals for future projects?
My only goal right now is to finish one book each year, so that I have a large collection of works to offer. I write both science fiction and fantasy, though lately it has been more fantasy and I am including more romance in my stories than before. The thing that connects my stories is the strong female heroine with some kind of vulnerability she has to overcome. Otherwise, I like to create where the mood takes me, and hope others will respond to my passion.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I didn't choose to become a writer, it's in my heart and soul. My earliest memories, even before I could read, involve me staring at picture books and making up stories. I wrote my first novel, about Cabbage Patch Dolls going to Mars, at seven or eight.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
My spirit soars every time I read a positive review of one of my books, or when someone just writes to tell me they enjoyed reading. I became a writer because I had to, but I sought publication because I wanted to share my stories with others in the hopes that they would find meaning, or at least enjoyment, in them.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
I gave this question quite a bit of thought, trying to figure out why it was so difficult for me to answer when I love so many books. Then, it hit me – in every book I truly love, it is because of a character, not a place. I considered the world of Ender's Game, but really, I just loved Ender and Bean. I thought of Harry Potter, but no, I really just like Harry and Hermione. If I lived in the world of The Dresden Files, I would probably get killed, but I sure to like Harry Dresden.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
It was a toss up between the Chronicles of Narnia (I read A Horse and His Boy more than any other book in the series) and A Wrinkle in Time.

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Aphrodite, because we could always use a little more love in the world.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yes, although I have to admit that Grace, the heroine in The Immortality Virus, is more who I think it would be cool to be than who I am. My voice does show through in her personality at odd moments, though.

What's the craziest writing idea you've had?
I don't know how crazy it is, but I considered, recently, writing a blog-based story as if I were the main character, having some sort of adventure and reporting in every few days.

Favorite Food?
Risotto

Favorite Candy?
Lindt

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
Movie: The final volume of the final Harry Potter series – finally, I can put it to rest! :)
Book: Ghost Story by Jim Butcher, Volume 13 in the Dresden Files series and holding my interest better than ever!

What was your favorite children's book?
The Monster at the End of This Book

How do you react to a bad review?
Oh boy. So, do you want the official, polished up version, or the no-holds-barred truth? Let's try it both ways, and see what happens...
Bad reviews are part of life, and as a writer, I have had to develop a thick skin. As I mentioned above, there isn't any book I would recommend to everyone, and that includes my own books. I put a piece of myself into my books when I send them out into the world, and when you read them, you pull a piece of yourself out. So the story I thought I wrote isn't necessarily the one you read, and that's okay. It's part of life.
But seriously, there's a little girl inside of me who just isn't quite that evolved, and tends to shed a few tears. Then she gets angry because, of course, that person missed the point entirely! Then she vents to her husband, after which, she seeks out positive reviews for a bit of affirmation. (This is all done in private – reviews are always the opinion of the person writing them, and I would never publicly criticize a negative review of one of my books.)
Every word I wrote above is absolutely true, so you can just decide which spin you prefer. :)

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A bigger house. I want my own study, so I don't have to share with my husband. (Hey, there are times I do want to be alone!)

Which authors have influence you most how?
In 2003, I attended a by-audition boot camp taught by Orson Scott Card, and found him to be a not only wonderful writer, but a wonderful teacher as well. His ideas greatly influenced me, especially as I shifted from writing for me to writing for publication.

What's your favorite season/weather?
Spring. It smells so good, and there is a certain energy in the newly awakening world.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Cheesy, usually bad end of the world movies.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
When I started reading romance novels a couple of years ago, I was embarrassed about it, but to be honest, I've gotten past it now. It is another facet of what I like to read, and it has expanded my outlook, helping me to add new depth to my own stories.

The Immortality Virus by Christine Amsden

In the mid-21st century, the human race stopped aging. Those who know why aren’t talking, and the few who are brave enough to ask questions tend to disappear. To an elite few, The Change means long life and health, but to the ever-increasing masses, it means starvation, desperation, and violence.
Four centuries after The Change, Grace Harper, a blacklisted P.I., sets off on a mission to find the man responsible for it all and solicit his help to undo The Change — if he’s still alive. To complicate matters, Grace’s employer is suspected of murdering his father, and when the police learn of their connection, they give her a choice — help them find the evidence they need to convict Matthew Stanton, or die. But if they discover Grace’s true mission, they won’t hesitate to kill her in order to preserve their shot at immortality.

Blog Tour: Guest Post When I'm Not Writing - Luminous by Dawn Metcalf

Welcome to Author Dawn Metcalf.

Bio:

The role of Dawn Metcalf will be played by the tall brunette in the off-the-shoulder, floor-length leather straightjacket. Makeup by Clinique, buckles by Jada Pinkett-Smith, hair by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

I have no good excuse for the way I write. I lived in a normal, loving, suburban home, studied hard, went to college, went to graduate school, got married, had babies, and settled down in northern Connecticut. Despite this wholesome lifestyle, I've been clearly corrupted by fairy tales, puppet visionaries, British humour and graphic novels. As a result, I write dark, quirky, and sometimes humorous speculative fiction.

My debut YA novel, LUMINOUS, is due out June 30, 2011 by Dutton Books.
Guest Post: When I'm Not Writing:

When I'm not writing, I am most likely asleep. Even then, I'm writing without words (commonly known as "dreaming" or more often than not "being woken up by a noisy alarm" or "woken up by a noisy small person who looks vaguely like me"). Nevertheless, at one time or another, I'm almost always writing, or thinking about writing, or thinking about trying *not* to think about writing in order to free my mind up for writing...you get the idea. I have a digital recorder in my car and carry pens and pencils everywhere for ideas scribbled hastily on scraps of paper, random envelopes, or backs of recent receipts. I drive and think about characters, I wash dishes and consider plot, it happens all the time: I can't stop it. Writing. I used to say I write because I can't *not* write, and that's really very true.
But, practically speaking, there are other things that I do: I'm a mother, a wife, an advocate, a second degree black belt, a public speaker, a sister, a daughter, a friend, an artist. Each of these things call me to be and do things other than write, but it's surprising how many of these things involve writing; either emails or outlines, notes to teachers or texts to friends, a lot of To Do lists and calendar schedules. If you cut out writing, I might just implode. There are boring, everyday things like washing dishes or folding laundry, but that hardly counts. There's kicking people in the head and punching them across the room, which is far more interesting, but often viewed at a safe distance, accompanied by silliness and screaming. There's getting to play with crayons and blocks and dress-up clothes and puzzle sets...and then my kids come home and it's all work, work, work! (These tiny persons keep asking what's for dinner and I wonder why they're asking me??)
Actually, I love to bake. I enjoy walking in the woods and exploring parks. I hang out with friends and play cards and board games, throw random parties and talk about all sorts of strangeness, usually while cooking meals or creating some crafty thing, I check out art festivals and shows and local fairs and outdoor concerts but really, the thing I do most of the time is sit home and write. In the morning, I drop off kids and write. At night, I cook dinner and help with homework, read to my son, invent stories with my daughter, make sure that they're washed and brushed and tucked in at night. Then tucked in again. And again. And again.
And then I write some more.

Luminous by Dawn Metcalf:

As reality slips and time stands still, Consuela finds herself thrust into the world of the Flow. Removed from all she loves into this shifting world overlapping our own, Consuela quickly discovers she has the power to step out of her earthly skin and cloak herself in new ones-skins made from the world around her, crafted from water, fire, air. She is joined by other teens with extraordinary abilities, bound together to safeguard a world they can affect, but where they no longer belong.
When murder threatens to undo the Flow, the Watcher charges Consuela and elusive, attractive V to stop the killer. But the psychopath who threatens her new world may also hold the only key to Consuela's way home.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Forgotten Locket by Lisa Mangum

Welcome to Author Lisa Mangum
Bio:
Lisa Mangum has loved and worked with books ever since elementary school, when she volunteered at the school library during recess. Her first paying job was shelving books at the Sandy Library. She worked for five years at Waldenbooks while she attended the University of Utah, graduating with honors with a degree in English. An avid reader of all genres, she has worked in the publishing department for Deseret Book since 1997. Besides books, Lisa loves movies, sunsets, spending time with her family, trips to Disneyland, and vanilla ice cream topped with fresh raspberries. She lives in Taylorsville with her husband, Tracy.
Interview:

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Anything with chocolate.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Homemade pancakes. Oh, but I also like cinnamon swirl French toast.

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&Ms.

What's your favorite season/weather?
To quote a line from one of my favorite songs, “Sunny with a high of 75.”

Favorite places to travel?
I love to go to Disneyland. My husband and I have gone at least one a year for the past 12 years, and it never gets old.

Favorite music?
I like a wide variety of music—but mostly rock and pop. Some of the recent live shows I’ve seen include Rush (twice), Dilana, Guster, Inverse, Danielle Barbe, Paramore, Barenaked Ladies, Dar Williams, and The Gracious Few.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl, though oddly, I do my best work in the morning.

Pet Peeves?
I hate unnecessary quote marks on signs. I cringe at the expression, “I seen . . .” And I shudder at the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard.

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I’ll admit it: I’ve seen every episode of Rock of Love with Bret Michaels. All three seasons. And the “Where are they now?” special. And the follow-up show, Life As I Know It. (I’m not proud of this fact, but there you have it.)

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Now that the Hourglass Door trilogy is finished, I’d like to work on a contemporary YA novel about sisters. And I have another fantasy story in mind staring faeries.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
One thing that has been surprisingly rewarding is hearing from readers that my books helped inspire them to want to write a book of their own. I think everyone has a story inside them that only they can tell, and I’m touched every time I hear that someone has started on their journey of storytelling because of something I wrote or said.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I have a special place in my heart for The Secret Garden, since it was one of the first books I read with my mom. I also loved Dragon’s Blood by Jane Yolen; it was one of the first books that got me interested in reading fantasy. But to be honest, I was a voracious reader as a child and I read just about anything I could get my hands on.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I can’t wait for Dance of Dragons by George R. R. Martin.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Too many to include! But some of my favorite authors include Margaret Atwood, Stephen King, Tad Williams, George R. R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Jane Yolen, Melanie Rawn, Toni Morrison, and Neil Gaiman.

What is your favorite Quote?
I found this quote during one of my trips to Disneyland (credited to a Disney Imagineer): “Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. Don’t stop.” I love it because it reminds me not to hurry through the writing process. Take time to develop characters, plot, and setting. Learn the craft. Don’t be in such a rush that I miss the moment. And don’t worry if I don’t get it right the first time. Don’t worry what other people think or say. Justdon’t stop.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Finish your manuscript. Whatever it is you’re working on—finish it. Even if it’s the stupidest ending in the world—finish it. You’ll learn so much from the process of writing a book start to finish that you can’t really learn any other way. (And once you’re done, you can always go back and change the ending if you really want to.)

What do you do in your free time?
What free time? (grin) I am an editor by day and a writer by night, so what little free time I have goes to spending time with my family, going to the movies, and trying to catch up on my laundry!

The Forgotten Locket by Lisa Mangum
The future is uncertain. The battle to control the past has begun. The final book in the riveting Hourglass Door trilogy begins when Abby steps through the black door, and she doesn't dare look back. Though it means leaving Dante—wounded, bleeding, and possibly blind—she knows it is the only way to save her family and stop Zo from manipulating the river of time and throwing the future into chaos. In the end, Abby must face a final confrontation that will take her to the very origins of the hourglass door.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Instructions for a Broken Heart by Kim Culbertson

Welcome to Author Kim Culbertson:

Kim Culbertson technically writes for teenagers, but there are some grown-ups who also like her work. Her first young adult novel Songs for a Teenage Nomad was published by Hip Pocket Press in June of 2007 and was reissued in fall of 2010 by Sourcebooks under their new young adult imprint FIRE. Songs for a Teenage Nomad won the 2008 Ben Franklin Award for Best New Voice in Children's/Young Adult Fiction, the silver 2008 IPPY medal for YA fiction, and several other awards. Kim’s second young adult novel Instructions for a Broken Heart was published by Sourcebooks Fire in May 2011.
When she's not writing for teenagers, she's teaching them, and has taught high school English, creative writing and drama for over ten years in both public and private schools. Currently, she works at Forest Charter School, a progressive personalized learning program. Throughout her teaching, she has also worked privately as a college advisor, workshop teacher, and educational consultant. Kim sees her writing as an extension of her teaching. She lives in the Northern California foothills with her husband and daughter where she loves her small town life and drinks more coffee than perhaps she should.
http://www.kimculbertson.com/

Interview:

If I was stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you bring with you?
I would bring coffee, books and my family. Not necessarily in that order.

What one book should everyone read?
 The Alchemist

What super power would I have?
Zapping people who say mean things. Just a quick zap! so they get a little jolt every time something rotten comes out of their mouths.

My favorite breakfast?
This is terrible: coffee and donuts. But I almost never eat that…

Night owl or early bird?
 Definitely Night Owl.

Tell us about Instructions for a Broken Heart in one sentence?
Go to Italy with Jessa – escape, enjoy, reflect.

What is the most rewarding experience since being published?
Seeing the look on my daughter’s face when the ARC of Instructions came in the mail. She said, “Mommy, it’s so pretty!”

What was my favorite book as a girl?
Anything with a strong female lead who had been through tragedy and was finding her way in the world. Like Anne of Green Gables.

If I could live anywhere in the world?
Where I live now.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I am in all my characters.

What do I do in my free time?
What’s free time?

How do I react to a bad review?
I could lie and say they don’t bother me. But it always hurts when someone takes a shot at you. I’m learning to duck better.

Favorite season?
Fall

Favorite music?
Anything with good lyrics.

In my wildest dreams, which author would I love to co-author a book with?
My daughter

Instructions for a Broken Heart:

Three days before her drama club's trip to Italy, Jessa Gardner discovers her boyfriend in the costume barn with another girl. Jessa is left with a care package from her best friend titled "Top Twenty Reasons He's a Slimy Jerk Bastard," instructing her to do one un-Jessa-like thing each day of the trip. At turns hilarious and heartwrenching, Instructions for a Broken Heart paints a magical Italy in which Jessa learns she must figure out life-and romance-for herself.

Author Interview & Novella Giveaway: Maya's Vacation by Rebecca Gomez Farrell

Welcome to Author Rebecca Gomez Farrell

Biography:
Rebecca Gomez Farrell is a proud Californian author and editor who presently lives in Durham, NC, where her wanderlust has been somewhat sated by all the fantastic food they have in the area. She spends her time writing about that food, local cocktails, and various wines and spirits on her blog, The Gourmez (http://www.thegourmez.com). She is working on an epic fantasy novel, and she has several horror and fantasy short stories published in various magazines, most recently, the urban fantasy, “Bother,” available in Issue #5 of Bull Spec (http://www.bullspec.com/issue/5). Her first romance book, Maya’s Vacation, is available for purchase at Astraea Press (http://www.astraeapress.com). Follow her daily pursuits on Twitter (@thegourmez)! She misses her Pacific Ocean immensely, especially the sea lions’ calls and the smell of salt in the air.

Interview:

What is one book everyone should read?
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It is a beautiful book that blends religious striving, human suffering, cultural understanding, and language into a narrative about learning to live with aliens on another planet and learning to live with ourselves.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Viennese Cafe Waltz—it was a specialty flavor done by Safeway Groceries’ store brand for a few years: chocolate covered hazelnuts in a cinnamon, vanilla, and mocha ice cream.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Eggs Goldenrod—cheese sauce over toast with sliced and grated hard-boiled eggs. Calories for the win!

Night owl or early bird?
Very much a night owl. I get a lot of eye rolls when I say I wake up around 10 am...until I remind them that means I’m in bed around 3 am.

Skittles or M&Ms?
M&Ms, especially those new coconut ones. If they made those in dark chocolate, I’d be in heaven.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book
Read Maya’s Vacation to satisfy your passions for art, food, wine, and love.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I am two-thirds of the way through my first epic fantasy novel, which has plenty of romance in the mix. I’ve been working on it in short spurts for almost a decade now, and there’s still work to be done! Otherwise, I’m always contributing to my food and drink blog, and I have a few horror and fantasy short stories ready for submission.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
Reading books! I was an avid reader as a child, and I’ve always wanted to create my own stories. As I grew older, I grew to love language, too, and all the different ways we can play with it.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
As a child, the Chronicles of Narnia were a huge influence on me. As a teenager, I went for the Lord of the Rings series instead. Obviously, my fantasy love has been around for a long time!

If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Athena, the goddess of wisdom, is a role I would gladly take. Having wisdom is great, but she’s also a hunter and leader of troops, so she knows when the wiser course is to battle rather than continue with an argument that will never be resolved. That’s insight I need!

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
I would live in Amsterdam with the climate of Costa Rica.

What is your favorite quote?
“A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.” Kurt Vonnegut in the Sirens of Titan.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
A writer. For a time, I considered veterinary practice, until I figured out that blood was involved.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
Kurt Vonnegut, Mark Twain, Mary Doria Russell, J.R.R. Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, and Charles Dickens.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
There must be a bit of me in all of them. For Maya, specifically, I share her joy in creation and appreciation for a good glass of wine.

Hidden talent?
Touching my tongue to my nose.

Favorite Food?
Shipwreck. It’s a Mexican casserole of tortilla chips, tomato sauce, cheese, and onion. Best appreciated under a layer of guacamole.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I cannot wait for book 5 of George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series: A Dance with Dragons. I only have to wait until July!

What was your favorite children's book?
The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood

Nickname?
Oh, I have a lot to choose from but Becca is the standard. The Gourmez, Calico, Cali, Bec, and Bec-Bec-Beccaw are all acceptable but not Becky. Never Becky.

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy?
A brilliant financial advisor.

Maya's Vacation:

Twenty-year-old Maya knew, as she watched Dean walk away from her front door, distraught at her silence and her father’s threats, that she would never love anyone with the intensity that she loved him. He was her painter, her artist, her soul mate and being apart from him hurt too much. She tucked those feelings away, determined to enjoy the safe and secure life her parents approved of: business school and a marriage to Chuck, a successful real estate agent.
Thirty years later, Chuck has cheated on and divorced her. But when he comes back, begging for reconciliation, Maya follows her intuition and takes a vacation to think it over. Her love of art, food, and wine combine at this retreat in the woods, and she prepares for a week of making new friends, tasting exquisite wines, and learning to paint again. What she hasn’t prepared for is the familiar voice she hears the first morning at camp . . . a voice that makes her skin tingle and brings back memories of who she used to be before Chuck. Has Maya buried her passion too deep to find love with Dean again?

The Hot List by Hillary Homzie:

It all starts as a goof between Sophie Fanuchi and her BFF Maddie Chen--a "Hot List" the two girls create and anonymously post in the girls' locker room listing the cutest boys at Travis Middle School. Soon enough the list has taken on a life of its own. Maddie's thrilled to be caught up in all the excitement and finally hanging out with the "pops," Travis Middle School's self-proclaimed It Girls. Sophie, however, misses just having secrets between herself and Maddie. Even worse, Maddie's suddenly super tight with Brenna Tate, leader of the pops and the daughter of Sophie's father's new girlfriend. As Sophie and Maddie's friendship unravels, Sophie latches onto an impulsive bet with Brenna to get the universe right again--Sophie declares she'll prove the list is meaningless by making over their wacky classmate Squid so that he can land on the Hot List. But will any bet or list matter more than Sophie's friendships . . .?
