Are books better than movies?
I think in most cases they are. I'm a huge believer in reading the book first and then watching the movie. I found several lists of upcoming movies that are being made from books. I'm so excited for a handful of them especially The Hunger Games, Austenland, City of Bones, The Hobbit, Shiver, Beautiful Creatures, A Wrinkle in Time, The Seventh Son (made from the book The Spook's Apprentice) & The Host. I've read all these titles and can't wait to see the movie adaptations. There are several other books that I want to read prior to seeing the movie Heist Society, Odd Thomas, Life of Pi and Magyk are on the the list.
Which upcoming movies being adapted from books are you looking forward to the most?

There are so many I'm excited for -- particularly The Hunger Games and also Shiver! As far as movies being better than the book, I think that rarely happens. Lovely Bones was the only movie that I felt was better than the book, but that was because I wasn't a huge fan of the book in the first place.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
OMG OMG they are making Septimus Heap and Beautiful Creatures into movies? AWESOMESAUCE
ReplyDeleteI have read One For The Money, but was so annoyed when I saw they cast Katherine Heigl as Stephanie that I will not be watching the movie. I really just don't see her in the part at all.
ReplyDeleteI am super excited about The Hobbit and The Hunger Games - both trailers give me goosebumps!:)
I only have one book that while I totally loved the movie, even after 3 attempts I never got further than 100 pages in it- Cold Mountain.
ReplyDeleteThe booka are generally a 100 times better than the movies. Twilight, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Time Traveler's Wife, Wizard of Oz were all fabulous movies but weren't a 10th as good as the books. It would kill me to hear people talk about how great the HP movies were and then I'd always ask "Weren't the books awesome?". They would look at me like "Are you kidding, why would I read the book when I can just see the movie?" How can you explain to a nonreader how much they are missing? They just don't get it.
Truthfully though, I'm really looking forward to so many of the same movies that you are. Great to know that these writers hard work is paying off for them.
I honestly had no idea they were turning Austenland into a movie! Very exciting! On the other hand, I'm a little disappointed in the casting for The Host. I think they could have done better, but that's just me.
ReplyDeleteIt's always hard for me to explain why movies can't be exactly like the books to people are way too picky. They are different medias, and therefore have to have different elements. I'm not too picky about adaptations. The only one I cannot stand was The Princess Diaries, and Avalon High. So, basically any time Disney tries to adapt Meg Cabot. It always ends badly.
I agree. I am also a big nut on reading the book before seeing the movie. My teenager didn't see the Twilight movies until she read ALL the books. My son didn't see Harry Potter movies until he read ALL the books. Both thanked me afterward (it must have been horrible for them to tell their mom she was right! ha ha)
ReplyDeleteThis isn't to say movies are bad. I love them and if one of my books is ever made into a movie I hope people will do both - read the book and then see the movie. :)

I'm really looking forward to Heist Society. Im scared about how Hunger Games and Mortal Instruments will turn out. I don't really like the twilight movies so I'm sceptical with breaking dawn. I want to read One for the Money first. Its sitting on my bookshelf but I still havn't gotten around to it. The rest Im not to fussed about...
ReplyDeleteI just heard from someone that "Discovery of Witches" was going to be made into a movie!!! This one I am really excited about.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book to movies were -
"Practical Magic"
"Message in a Bottle"
"The Notebook"
I'm an either or person - if I read the book I don't want to watch the movies (but there are a few exceptions) - and if I've watched the movie, I'm definitely not going to then go read the book. Kinda weird.
ReplyDeleteSee, I guess I'm weird. I get so attached to the stories presented in books, I will judge the movie accordingly. It's rare I like book to movie adaptations. What I've discovered, however, is that I'll love them if I don't read the book first. The Count of Monte Cristo, for example. If I'd read the book first, I would have been appalled by the changes they made. Since I didn't, I could appreciate the cinematic value of the movie separately from the awesomeness of the book. So I've learned to hold off reading the books if I hear there's a movie coming out.
ReplyDeleteOh fun! I didn't know about Alchemyst and Magyk. That's exciting.
ReplyDeleteGood post! It is important to read the book first, I think. That way, you can have a better a good idea of what the author originally intended. If my books ever make it to movies (which would be amazing), I would definitely hope that there would be readers like you who would want to read and then watch.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to:
The Hunger Games
The Hobbit (one of my favorite books)
A Wrinkle In Time (same)
Tiger's Curse
Shiver (I didn't know they were doing this one!)
Also, I'm looking forward to the upcoming superhero movies (may have been comic books...but still books): The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.
Thanks for the great post! I'm following anew. :)

I read The Silence of the Lambs and Cujo before seeing the movies and loved the books much more than the movies. I made the mistake of reading the Twilight books after seeing the last 2 movies and I like the movies better than the books..go figure.
ReplyDeleteSo unbelievably excited for One for the Money going the day it opens I have read 17 out of 18 of the Stephanie Plum series love them!
ReplyDeleteReading Hunger Games right now and I saw the trailer and am excited for that one!
I have yet to see part one of Breaking Dawn but I will be excited for part two after I see part one :D
I'm excited for Hunger Games to come out, but even more excited to see the Host, as that is probably my favorite book of all time. Having said that, I agree with one of the above posters, that I am not really happy with The Host cast. We'll just have to see how they do.
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger Games! And I will say this: Dexter the TV series is MUCH better than Dexter the book series. That's the only series I've ever said that about, but it's true. Also, Stardust the book and Stardust the movie were equally great but two totally different animals. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going with the majority vote and saying The Hunger Games. I just finished the book over the weekend and I can't wait to see how it translates onscreen! And I have to agree w/Beth on the Dexter show and the book series. I enjoy both but the show is MUCH better!
ReplyDelete"What Alice Forgot" by Liane Moriarty was optioned for film, from what I remember.
ReplyDeleteI like to read the books first and rarely are the movies as good. I did find one exception..."Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts is so much better as a movie.
Wow!I never knew that City Of bones and shiver was becoming a movie.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to Breaking Dawn part 2, Heist Society, The Hunger Games. The hobbit and The Lorax.
I can't wait for th Hunger Games!
Go team Peeta!
=D
One of the few series I haven't read yet was Dexter and I loved the TV series. I've been collecting most of them and the Temperance Brennan (Bones) series to read at a later date.
ReplyDeleteI always feel a great NEED to read the book before seeing the movie... there are several movies that I have refused to watch because I have not seen the movie!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer Books over movies, and I prefer to read before I watch, I am not a Twilight fan, so no to Breakind Dawn, but I do want to watch what they do with Heaist Society, I LOVED the book. and I might watch the Hunger Games, even if my friends keep hiding the books from me.
ReplyDeleteI liked P.S. I love you more than the book.
ReplyDeleteOh yes! I never did read the book, but I loved the movie!
DeleteI'm most anxious to see "Atlas Shrugged."
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I am on pins and needles waiting for The Hunger Games! I can't think of a time when a movie was BETTER than its book... but I thought Water for Elephants was well done. Harry Potter and to a much lesser degree, Twilight, I think were also good. And I have very, VERY high hopes for Hunger Games.
ReplyDeleteAlso: I just got pretty excited when I saw The Host and Odd Thomas!
ReplyDeleteWati... Odd Thomas was a movie???
DeleteI am looking forward to 'The Host' and 'The Hobbit'.
ReplyDeletethe one I am looking forward to that wasn't on there is Warm Bodies!! love love love that book. I tried to read the Host like 3 times and couldn't get into it. so I will just watch the movie :) I thought Water for Elephants was better than the book. And loved the ending to the Dear John in the movie unlike the book.
ReplyDeleteI'm particularly waiting for The Hobbit, Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Odd Thomas, and The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Wrinkle in Time was made into TV movie so I'm curious how this will turn out since it's a much bigger production at their disposal. :D I can't really chose which medium I like best since I acknowledge each medium their individual highs and lows (if there is one). Movies are purely visuals and it's up to the crew/writers to translate the authors words in brevity yet always striving to maintain essence of the books they've adapted from.
ReplyDeleteTHE HOBBIT!!!! Sooooo excited!!! :D Also Austenland and City of Bones. :D The rest, sure, I'll watch them, but I'm not sitting on the edge of my seat. Hunger Games looks good, I didn't know they were making Heist Society and The Host into movies! Exciting! A few others look fun too, but I doubt I can get anyone to see them with me... we'll see. :D This is an awesome post though, And I agree that most books are better than the movie (not all, but most)
ReplyDeleteYou missed one... Warm Bodies.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to The next Breaking Dawn movie, mostly because of the 4 books Breaking Dawn was my favorite. I think it was a mistake to make it 2 movies. They had to drag it out and ruined the nice pace the book had.
ReplyDeleteThe Hobbit, of course!! Although I didn't read the book..
The Hunger Games
City of Bones...yay!! can't wait!!!
Along the same line, I am really looking forward to the television adaptation of Kim Harrison’s Hollows series on the CW.
A lot of these others coming to the big screen is news to me!
I think books are usually better because they can get away with a lot more. Movies have to adhere to the ratings system and depending on their target audience, they have to shoot for a specific rating so as not to exclude them. Books don't have to worry as much about that.
I don't think it matters to read a book before the movie because they are never truly the same. I saw I Am Number Four before I read the book. The movie actually made me want to read it. Most TV shows based off books I love the shows but don't care for the books. I read the first PLL and it was good but I definitely love the show more. Same thing with Vampire Diaries I read a lil of the book and I'm just happy the show is more awesome. I love Percy Jackson and the Olympians and then a lil of the book. Way different between the two I don't think I will ever read the series. I am most excited for TMI to get to the big screen and also The Hobbit. I'm just glad books are getting such great recognition to be made into movies or even shows.
