Know Me Better 12/8

"Know Me Better"

Each week I will pick 5 questions off of my author interview list to answers. In trying to figure out how to share more about myself I got to thinking that I would love to get to know the readers of my blog better too.  I invite you to share your answers to these questions as well.  You can share them as a comment on this post or share them on your own blog and link up to this post.

This Week's Questions:
Pet Peeves?
Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
Pizza or Pasta?
Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....
Favorite sport?

Pet Peeves?
It's pretty hard to ruffle my feathers...
I don't like it when my husband or kids try to talk to me when I'm on one end of the house and they are on the other. I'm constantly saying "if it's me you are talking to I can't hear you". Oh and kids that talk to me when I'm on the phone... I've unknowingly agreed to way too many things when I shoo my kids away because I'm in the middle of a phone call. I get off the phone to find them eating something or doing something I don't want only to be told I said yes when they asked me while I was talking on the phone.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your day starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
It really varies based on what I have going on in a day. School days work like this - Up at 6:45 and spend the next 2 hours getting kids ready and off to school. Seriously 2 full hours every morning since the schools here start at 3 different times! Check email & blog, clean house, shower, check email and blog, do some laundry, check email and blog, pick kindergarteners up, lunch, run errands, check email and blogs, older kids come home at 2:30 and then the rest of my day is spent being mom: homework, snack, take kids to practices, dinner, etc. 8:30 start bedtime and hope the kids are all in bed with enough time to do a little blogging and reading before falling to sleep exhausted.

Pizza or Pasta?
Usually pizza but it depends on what kind of pasta, once in a while a really good Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo may be my choice instead of pizza.

Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....
Pride and Prejudice

Favorite sport?

Sports really aren't my thing... I never watch them on TV. I ran in high school but hate running now. I enjoy playing volleyball but just for fun. I'm not very competitive. I do like watching my kids play sports as long as no one gets hurts and the refs don't make stupid calls.

Now it's your turn! Share an answer to one or more of these questions as a comment or post your answers on your blog and link up here!

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Burn by Annie Oldham

Welcome to Author Annie Oldham
I adore writing and reading YA novels. I grew up with an insatiable desire to read and then came the insatiable desire to write. I've been blessed to have both of those in my life. Away from my writing, I'm the mother of the two most adorable girls in the world, I have the best husband in the world, and I live in the hottest place in the world (not really, but Phoenix sure feels like it). I love to cook, sing, and play the piano.

Interview:
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I would have four extra arms. Not necessarily a super power (it would definitely make me a super freak show), but it would sure make holding my fussy one-year-old, cleaning up, making a phone call, and throwing together dinner a whole lot easier.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?

Toast made from homemade whole-wheat bread and homemade jam. I got on a canning kick a couple years ago, and I love it. My pantry's loaded with jams, peaches, and apple butter. Mmm...apple butter...

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Hearing people tell me they loved my book. Every time I hear it, it puts a smile on my face and I soar through the rest of my day. The writing part of being an author is pretty solitary. So hearing someone talk about how much they enjoyed my book--what parts made them squirm or smile or cry--is the best.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I loved Lloyd Alexander's The Chronicles of Prydain. I found my mom's old copies on the bookshelf when I was maybe ten, and I devoured them. Those books really sparked my love for fantasy. I found some hardcovers a few years ago with the same cover art as my mom's. I snatched them up. I still read them every couple years. They're amazing.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
The idea of a soundtrack for a book is a strange thing for me, yet so many authors have them. I cannot listen to music while I write. Not for the life of me. I adore music so much that it takes up too much of my brain, and I can't concentrate on what I'm doing. So I write in silence. Well, as much silence as I can have in my house. But there are individual songs I love that speak to me. "Tears and Rain" by James Blunt is a great one for Terra. To me the song is about how people see you versus what's really going on inside.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
There are two Snow White movies coming out in 2012, and I'm a sucker for retold fairy tales. Charlize Theron looks absolutely stunning and sounds deliciously evil as the wicked queen. I'll be interested to see how different the two movies are.

How do you react to a bad review?
I remember that it's one person's opinion. Once I've done that, I try to look at it objectively and see the validity behind it. See if I can use it to improve what I'm currently working on. Authors can't write in bubbles. Every bit of feedback helps.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I've always loved the story and the characters; parts of it make me cry every time. And let's face it. I'd be one of the coolest kids on the block if I had one.

What do you do in your free time?
Free time? What's free time? Just kidding. I gobble up books in just about every minute I have to spare.

Write a Haiku about your book
Thanks to my English degree, I knew the format for a haiku off the top of my head :)
Terra hates the sea
She sacrifices for land
But will love save her?

The Burn
The Burn is full of nuclear fallout, roving gangs, anarchy, unreliable plumbing. That's what Terra's father tells her. She has lived her whole life in comfort in a colony at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. She hates it. And she would pay any price to leave. But when Terra finally escapes the colony, she finds out her father is right. She finds a group of survivors that quickly become friends, and every day with them is a race for survival. When she witnesses and commits unspeakable acts, she has to decide where her loyalty lies: with the colony she despises or The Burn, where every day is filled with nightmares.

Book Review: Pride & Popularity by Jenni James (The Jane Austen Diaries #1)

Title: Pride & Popularity
Author: Jenni James
Series: #1 of The Jane Austen Diaries but stands alone
Publisher: Inkberry Press
Released: July 13, 2011

***AUTHOR'S DISCLAIMER***
If you are hoping to find a YA book full of paranormal beasts, sex, or teens who act much more like under-aged adults, I suggest you save your money and do not buy this book. In fact don't buy any of The Jane Austen Diaries. However, if you are looking for a clean, lighthearted, sweet romance, where teens are good and happy and normal--like all of the teens I know (including my own!) then read on. You've come to the right place. :) --Jenni

Chloe Elizabeth Hart despises the conceited antics of the popular crowd, or more importantly, one very annoying self-possessed guy, Taylor Anderson, who seems determined to make her the president of his fan club! As if! Every girl in the whole city of Farmington, New Mexico, is in love with him, but he seems to be only interested in Chloe.

This modern high school adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” is a battle of wits as Chloe desperately tries to remain the only girl who can avoid the inevitable—falling for Taylor.

This books was fun.  I love Jane Austen and I love clean young adult fiction so this was a perfect mix for me.  Pride & Popularity was completely predictable but that didn't keep me from enjoying every minute of it.  It's a cute story that retells Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in a modern day setting.

If you read for enjoyment you'll likely be taken with this book.  If you read with a more critical eye there are a few things that might detract you from the story.  Since I am one who reads purely for entertainment and enjoyment this book was a hit with me.

There are 6 books planned in this series:
Pride & Popularity
Northanger Alibi
Persuaded
Emmalee
Mansfield Ranch
Sensible & Sensational
I'm looking forward to reading them all!

Rating: 4 Stars - Great Book

Guest Post & Book Giveaway: Protostar by Braxton Cosby

Welcome to Author Braxton Cosby
Braxton A. Cosby is a dreamer with a vision of continuously evolving and maximizing the untapped potential of the human spirit. Braxton received a lot of his inspiration from watching the accomplishments and exploits of his famous uncle, comedic legend Bill Cosby. A physical therapist by background, Braxton received his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate from the University of Miami. Braxton’s fascination of science grew into an obsession of Sci-fi and on one unassuming Sunday, this self-proclaimed romantic decided to pursue a “calling” to create a new genre of writing; Sci-Fance- mixing science fiction and romance. Braxton lives in Georgia with his wife and two children. He believes that everyone should pursue joy that surpasses understanding and live each day as if it were the last.

http://www.braxtonacosbygodson.com/

10 Things You Might Not Know About Braxton!

1. Yes, the obvious: I am the nephew of famous comedian Bill Cosby. And yes, he is an amazing source of encouragement and inspiration in both my professional and personal life.

2. I have not always wanted to be a writer. I’m actually a physical therapist by trade and the inspiration to write my first novel came in church one unassuming Sunday when I distinctly heard God speak, telling me to write Protostar. It is the first book in a trilogy that will have spin-off books that cover the history of The Star-Crossed Universe.

3. I am happily married with two wonderful little girls.

4. I have an obsession with movies. I love science fiction and fantasy, but a good romance with rich characters is always welcome.

5. I do the majority if my writing between the hours of 10pm and 1am. With my busy schedule, it’s really the only quiet time I get.

6. I graduated from the University of Miami (Florida) with three degrees; bachelors, masters and doctorate.

7. My favorite color is blue.

8. I am a NatGeo and Discovery channel geek. I love the programs that discuss physics and space. I dvr’ed so many shows that I actually have to go back and pause them occasionally when I replay them to so “What in the world did they just say?” in order to understand the concepts.

9. Favorite quote: The more you know, the more you may know too much. Not allowing yourself to be one to learning more.

10. Favorite book of the Bible: Acts.

As an unforeseeable event delays his assassination, William decides to study his target more closely and begins to form a connection with Sydney that challenges his inner being. But this conflict is the least of his problems, as a conspiracy back on his home planet Fabricius threatens the lives of those he loves and his father s royal legacy. Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout

Welcome to Author Jennifer Armentrout

Bio:
Jennifer L. Armentrout lives in West Virginia.

When she's not hard at work writing, she spends her time, reading, working out, watching zombie movies, and pretending to write. She shares her home with her husband, his K-9 partner named Diesel, her hyper Jack Russell Loki, and her pet turtle called Michelangelo. Her dreams of becoming an author started in algebra class, where she spent her time writing short stories. Therefore explains her dismal grades in math. Jennifer writes Adult and Young Adult Urban Fantasy and Romance.

http://jenniferarmentrout.blogspot.com/

Interview:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I'd probably go into the future and see what's up and what people are doing.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
A laptop w/ internet connection, a genie to grant wishes, and a kindle.

What is one book everyone should read?
The Soul Screamers Series/ Demon trappers Daughter Series.

If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Mighty Mouth. It was a nickname a middle school teacher gave me for talking too much. I think it sounds pretty cool.

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
Read people's minds. Some people wouldn't want that, but I am always curious to know what people are really thinking.

Night owl, or early bird?
Night Owl.

One food you would never eat?
Deer Meat. Ew.

Pet Peeves?
When people don't say thank you.

Hidden talent?
I can mimic just about any voice (Yoda, Bobby from Bobby's World, you name it)

How do you react to a bad review?
I run around the room, screaming, crying and pulling out my hair. Then I sit in a dark corner for hours at a time. Okay. Not really. Sometimes I laugh. Sometimes the review has a good point, but most of the times, I just don't read them.

Obsidian (Lux #1)
Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.

Book Review: Faithful Fit & Fabulous by Connie E. Sokol

Title: Faithful, Fit & Fabulous
Author: Connie E. Sokol
Publisher: Cedar Fort
Released: August 8, 2011

Filled with humor and I can relate life experiences, Faithful, Fit and Fabulous is the ideal 8-week life boost that will refresh any woman's life. Gospel principles from scriptures, priceless gems from general conference addresses, and more, are shared along with ways to readily apply them in your busy daily life. Establish holy habits, feel fit and fabulous, and get organized. Just one goal a week for eight weeks simple and fun.

Author's Website: http://8basics.com/

I started this book back in August. It is not a book that should be read in once sitting or even in one week. To use it properly and absorb and apply what is in this book you really need to read just one chapter a week and practice the ideas and suggestions. That should take 8 weeks but I think I'm a slow learner and am on the 8 month plan. I started off well for the first two weeks and then life happened. I had to laugh and shake my head because Connie has a section in the books that says Caveat: Beware the Two-Week Bomb:
Somewhere between two and three week, life will throw you a curve ball, often many. No one knows why; it's one of those Bermuda Triangle things. Personally, I believe it's good old-fashioned opposition to prevent you from making a life-improving change.

It took me a good month to recover from the curve ball life threw me and then I started again... only to have another curve ball thrown at me. I guess that really is how life goes, at least my life anyway.  But I've learned that once the waves settle I can pick my self back up and start again.  Hopefully through the process I'm improving and becoming a better person.

If you are looking for a book to help get you moving in the right direction as far as goals and self-improvement give this one a try.  It is written by an LDS author and has quotes from LDS leaders but I don't think you need be LDS to enjoy and benefit from this book.

Book Giveaway & Author Interview: Hunted by Cheryl Rainfield

Welcome to Author Cheryl Rainfield

Bio:
I love to read. Books nurture me, helped me survive the abuse I endured as a child and teen. I also love to write. I write fantasy books and edgy, realistic fiction for teens.
My fantasy books often hold hope that I need, and feel others might need, too, while my realistic fiction is gritty, intense, and emotional. All of my books have fragments of the abuse I experienced. I write about some of the harsh things teens go through...things that I think shouldn't be hidden. But I also write about healing, hope, and love, and finding courage and strength.
In SCARS (WestSide, 2010), Kendra must face her past and stop hurting herself before it's too late. There's a lot of me in SCARS; like my main character, Kendra, I am an incest survivor, I used self-harm to cope, and I'm queer. And it's actually my arm on the cover. In my teen paranormal fantasy, HUNTED (WestSide, Oct 2011), Caitlyn is a telepath in a world where that is illegal, and she must choose between saving herself or saving the world. Like Caitlyn, I know what it's like to have my life threatened, to have someone stalk me, and to have to decide between hiding my true self or being who I am, even if that means danger to myself. I also drew on my experience with cults and ritual abuse in creating the world that Caitlyn lives in.
Books were my survival during my childhood, and my journey into myself. Books give me hope. I hope mine will give you hope, too, or something that you need.

http://cherylrainfield.com/blog/

Interview
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I used to want to have telepathy, like my character Caitlyn in HUNTED (Dec 02). Now, after writing about it, I think it could be overwhelming and painful at times. I think it might feel freeing to be able to fly, or more gratifying to have healing powers. I would love to be able to heal the people I love.

One food you would never eat?
Meat. I'm a vegetarian. I saw too many animals and people be killed when they didn't want to be, to feel comfortable eating meat.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?
When I was a child and teen, my abusers repeatedly threatened to kill me if I talked. Writing (and art) became my way of saying things I couldn't say aloud. It was my way to have a voice.
I also loved books--they gave me safety, and helped me hope and dream, and see what kind, safe people and families were like. They also helped me want to write.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I think it's all the reader letters I receive. I get letters from readers every week for SCARS, telling me how it helped them to stop cutting, get into therapy, talk about being queer or a sexual abuse survivor or their self-harm for the first time, how my book helped them feel less alone. And I also get letters from people who didn't go through those things, but who now understand them better or have greater compassion. That is what I hoped for, and more! It's an incredible, feel-good experience to know that my book has touched so many people in such a positive way.

It was also so lovely, feel-good, and exciting to receive awards and acclaim for SCARS, including the Governor General Literary Award finalist, ALA 2011 Top 10 Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers; ALA Stonewall Book Award Nominee, and to have it be on the Rainbow List Biography. And getting blurbs from authors I admire and love the work of--like Lois Duncan, Ellen Hopkins, Gail Giles, Wendy Orr, Kathleen Jeffrie Johnson, Julie Anne Peters, Ellen Bass and Laura Davis, Marlene Perez, Adele Griffin, Cinda Williams Chima, and Pam Bachorz--those were each a thrill!

What's the one piece of advice you would give to aspiring authors?
If you believe in your writing, if you want to get published, don't give up. It took me ten years to get SCARS published.
Read books on writing technique, or if you can't learn that way, take some classes.
Join a writers' critique group in your genre, and get some feedback on your work. It can take many drafts to get it into a publishable state.
Read a lot--especially in the genre you write in, but also outside of it a bit.
Write what you need to write.

Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yes. I always put a lot of myself (and my trauma experiences) into my books. I can see myself in Kendra (from SCARS) in her being vulnerable and in pain; in her being a sexual abuse survivor, queer, and using self harm to cope; in her using art to help herself, and needing therapy as a support; in the way she needs people. And in her inner strength, and her determination to heal and to confront her abuse memories even though she's in so much pain.
And I see myself in Caitlyn (from HUNTED) in her acute awareness of others' emotions; in her compassion for others and her wanting to help save or protect others; in her standing up to oppression; in her finding a voice and trying to be who she really is even though it puts herself in danger and others try to suppress it; and in her vulnerability and strength.
Both characters are survivors, and so am I.

What was your favorite children's book?
I had so many, and they're still favorites of mine. A few of them are: Down a Dark Hall by Lois Duncan; The Third Eye by Lois Duncan; The Forgotten Door by Alexander Key; Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt; Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery; The Pigs Are Flying by Emily Rodda; The Magic Grandfather by Jay Williams; The Toothpaste Genie by Frances Duncan; and The Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter.

If you were a superhero what would your kryptonite be?
Feeling like I have to save everyone in pain.

What do you do in your free time?
I don't have much free time right now--writing and book promotion are both full-time jobs. But I love to (and make time to) read good books (especially YA, middle grade, and picture books) and comics; watch a good movie or show; spend time with friends and the people I love; play with my dog; create art; blow bubbles; bake cookies--and, of course, eat them!

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I bought a print by Rob Gonsalves--Bedtime Aviation from his and Sarah L Thompson's picture book Imagine a Night, and I framed and hung it.

Finish the sentence-- One book I wish I had written is...
Down a Dark Hall by Lois Duncan, Across the Universe by Beth Revis, The Pigs Are Flying by Emily Rodda, and most any book by Dick Francis. They all speak to me deeply, grip me, and feed me each time I read them.

Write a haiku about your book.
I hide to survive/ but i want to be myself / how can I and live?

Hunted
Caitlyn, 15, a Paranormal, is on the run with her mom, trying to stay one step ahead of the ParaTroopers who would enslave her just like anyone who has powerful psychic abilities. Attempting to have somewhat of a normal life, Caitlyn and her mom hide in plain sight, living in a seedy hotel in a big city, where Caitlyn hopes to blend in by enrolling at the local high school. She secretly fights back against government oppression by blogging about equal rights for all Paras, protecting herself by signing them Teen Para. When she discovers her long ago kidnapped brother Daniel at school she s elated, but is saddened to find he s controlled by the government ParaTroopers as a Para-slave. As Para Cleansing Day nears, increasing numbers of Paras are turned in to the authorities and things grow tenser and more dangerous, especially at school. When a group robs a bank and threatens Normals, the shadow of guilt is cast on Teen Para. A killer, the Para Reaper, secretly goes hunting for Paras to drain the life out of them. Despite everything, Caitlyn befriends a Normal girl, Rachel, who is a Para sympathizer, and falls for a cute classmate, Alex, also a Normal, who always makes her feel so good whenever he s around. But it s not safe for Paras to date Normals, and it would put Caitlyn in grave danger of being discovered. When ParaTroopers crack down at school after several Paras are discovered, Caitlyn finds herself under increasing scrutiny. Fearing for Caitlyn, her mom is anxious to pack up and bolt, but Caitlyn s growing attachments make her reluctant to leave. Will she evade capture, or will she be caught and turned into a Para Slave? And just who is trying to frame her? A tautly written, suspenseful thrill ride, Hunted will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

“Grandma?” Cozy called as she closed the front door behind her. She inhaled a deep breath—bathing in the warm, inviting scent of banana nut bread baking in the oven. “Grandma? Are you in here?”

“Cozy!” her grandma called in a loud whisper. “I’m in the kitchen. Hurry!”

Cozy frowned—her heart leapt as worry consumed her for a moment. Yet, as she hurried to the kitchen to find her grandma kneeling at the window that faced the new neighbors yard, and peering out with a pair of binoculars, she exhaled a sigh of relief.

“Grandma! You’re still spying on him?” she giggled.

“Get down! They’ll see us! Get down!” Dottie ordered in a whisper, waving one hand in a gesture that Cozy should duck.

Giggling with amusement at her grandma’s latest antics, Cozy dropped to her hands and knees and crawled toward the window.

“Who’ll see us?” she asked.

“Here,” Dottie whispered, pausing only long enough to reach for a second set of binoculars sitting on the nearby counter. “These are for you.” She smiled at Cozy—winked as a grin of mischief spread over her face. “And now…may I present the entertainment for this evening…Mr. Buckly hunk of burning love Bryant…and company.”

Change in the Way Winners are Announced

I love hosting giveaways but it does take me a lot of time.  I'm behind on drawing winners and on announcing winners.  The post I've been dong each week announcing winners takes me way too long to put together so I am no longer going to do it.  I've got 20 giveaways waiting to be posted but I need to close out the 20 giveaways that have ended in the past couple of weeks.  I've been trying to figure out a better system but haven't come up with one.
I've considered creating a page that lists all the winners but that is just one more thing to do and I'm trying to cut back on the amount of time I spend blogging.  For now I will be emailing the winner to let them know they won.  I will announce the winner by adding their name to the bottom of the giveaway post as I did for this giveaway:

If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
  • Hugh Jackman, George Clooney, Nigella, JK Rowling, Michael Buble
If you were a superhero what would your name be?
  • Future Girl (because I’m in Australia, I’m always a day ahead of USA and one of the lovely Entangled authors bestowed this nickname on me!)
Night owl, or early bird?
  • I run around after my kids all day so my writing ‘day’ starts around 8.30pm so I’m definitely a night owl. Considering my preschooler pries my eyelids open at the crack of dawn most mornings, I guess I’m an enforced early bird too!
Pet Peeves?
  • Fake friends, people who interrupt while talking,
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
  • ‘Sex & the City’ meets ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, a hilarious romp through Mumbai and NYC filled with secrets, spices and sizzle!
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
  • I’m working on number 31 & 32 for Harlequin Mills and Boon, while writing another YA.
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
  • Hitting the USA TODAY bestseller list was really rewarding. I’ll never get tired of seeing that label on my books.
If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
  • Would have to be Harry Potter’s world. So vivid and exciting!
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

What do you do in your free time?
  • My first response to this is ‘what free time’ as I’m constantly running after kids, running a home or running ragged! When I do occasionally sit down, I’m a cliché: I love to read.
Who or what inspired you to become an author?
  • My high school English teacher, Joy Carver, was amazing. I fully credit my love of writing to her. She encouraged and nurtured my writing, she was wonderful.
How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
  • I would’ve bungee jumped but I was 5 months pregnant at the time (kidding! About the bungee jump!) Instead, took hubby and my folks out for a posh Chinese dinner at an inner city hotel and splurged on a Tag Heuer watch I’d coveted for years.
