Blog Tour: Tens List & Book Giveaway: The Long Weekend by Savita Kalhan

Welcome to Author Savita Kalhan.  I thrilled to have her here to do a guest post as part of The Teen Book Scene Blog Tour for her book The Long Weekend.  She's going to be sharing her favorite Book to Movie Adaptations.

Savita's Top Ten Favourite Movies that were made from books:

I love books and I love films, but I’ve always worried when a favourite book has been made into a film. Invariably, I will think that it can never be as good as the book, and usually I’m right. The book is always better than the film, but that’s not to say that there haven’t been good movies that have been inspired by a book. I’ve probably missed out some really good movies that were made from books, but this is a list of my favourite movies that were made from books that I’ve read:

1. The Godfather
For me, the film version was far better than the book. I watched it again recently and still loved it.
2. The Lord of the Rings
The books are brilliant – I’ve been reading and re-reading them since I was twelve, but the film versions are fantastic if they are considered separately from the books.
3. The Railway Children
A classic book and a classic film that I grew up with.
4. Holes
My son introduced me to Louis Sachar, and I’m so glad he did.
5. I am Legend
I’m a Will Smith fan and this probably isn’t his best film, but I really enjoyed it. I’m still reading the book – in daylight hours only though!
6. Anna Karenina
I read this in my teens and I loved it. I think the film is being remade this year, but the version that I loved was with Vivien Leigh as the doomed Anna.
7. Gone With the Wind
This was such a classic in our home when I was growing up – the book and the film, but I do love the film version of the book with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. I’m not sure I would ever want to see a remake of it with anyone else.
8. Rebecca
Another book I read in my teens and which I loved. The film version I loved was Alfred Hitchcock’s black and white thriller with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine.
9. Silence of the Lambs
I enjoyed the book, but for me the film version was utterly brilliant! Anthony Hopkins was chillingly inspired as Hannibal Lector, and Jodie Foster was perfect as the young FBI agent.
10. To Kill a Mockingbird
I love both the book and the film. Gregory Peck was utterly brilliant as Atticus Finch.

As I was doing this list lots of other films came to mind –some of them I had read as books and others that I hadn’t. I’m sure every one of your readers would come up with a very different list – and I would probably slap my forehead and think – How could I have forgotten that! So I would be very interested if your readers post their top ten list of favourite movies that were made from books in the comments section.

  4. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. of course the books are waaaaay better than the film. But I love the books so the film just gave me a reason to talk about the books with anyone who would listen! and it's a great way to get a quick dose of the books, when I don't actually have time to sit and read them all. (cause once i start reading them i don't want to put them down):)
I also love The Last Unicorn, however I haven't been able to read the book yet, but it is one of my favorite films, that I only found out recently was adapted from a book.

  17. I'm usually very critical of movies made from books. There's a family joke about my throwing pop corn at the screen. But there are a few, I've enjoyed. The Harry Potter movies are well done. Narnia. I thought the movie How to Train Your Dragon was better than the book. But I think my all time favorite movie based on a book is To Kill a Mockingbird. (Oh, and I do agree with whomever said the Agatha Christi adaptations are good. )

  48. hey Kathy, thanks for hosting yet another giveaway! :)

My favorite movie adaptations of books are:

    1) Fight Club (by Chuck Palahniuk) - although the book has way more depth, the film adaptation was very apt & entertaining.

    2) Lord of the Rings (by J.R.R Tolkein) - the imagery in the book is so beautifully depicted in the movie - the entire series of movies has been amazing.

    3) Harry Potter (by JK Rowling) - What needs to be said about this series? Although there is some stuff ommitted in the movies, this movie series has still been largely entertaining, and has depicted Potter's world to perfection.

    4) Jurassic Park (by Michael Crichton) - I read this book right before the movie came out,and for days I had dreams about being trapped in a world with dinosaurs - then the movie came out, and those dreams continued for months! lol :P

    5) Schindler's List (by Thomas Keneally) - this book was heart breaking and beautiful, but what the movie did with its cinematography was beyond amazing. It took emotions, and gave them color in an otherwise drab world!

All the aforementioned have not just been great books, but were actually turned into great specimens of films on the silver screen. Not only did it relay a good story, but did it with excellent imagery, presented it in cinematographic excellence! :)

    - The Lord of the Rings
    - Harry Potter (for the movies 5, 6 and 7, because too many details annoy me in the first four!)
    - Jurassic Park

    Among the books I haven't read :
    - The notebook and A walk to remember : two beautiful movies
    - Forrest Gump (how don't cry, really ?!)

  62. Hm ... that's a hard one ... there have been many ... I think I liked the adaptions (both in Swedish) of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Let The Right One In". I also liked the Harry Potter adaptations and the Spiderwick Chronicles adaptation. The Twilight ones were well done, and filmed well - but didn't hold my attention like I wanted, and the Clancy book adaptations have yet to really grip me. So ... after that long prelude, I will go with "Watchmen" - a graphic Novel so counts! :)

    Thanks!

  63. Great list and I see several of my favorites too but changing the movie ending to I AM LEGEND and what it did to the true meaning of the title is what I didn't like about the adaptation.
I loved that little twist at the end of book...

Some of my favorite book to movie adaptations includes:
THE JOY LUCK CLUB - I love Amy Tan's book and the mother/daughter stories and the movie kept that intact very well.
THE ENGLISH PATIENT - This was done surprisingly well, I didn't think the movie could have the same dreamy effect as the book but they managed it.
FIRST BLOOD - Even though the movie changed the ending it gave us Rambo!

    Thanks for the giveaway.
