Welcome to Author P.J. Sharon
I knew I would be a writer someday when I was a little girl sitting on my grandpa’s knee and telling him stories that he would help me put on paper. By the time I entered kindergarten I could already read and write, and I couldn’t wait to look up new words every morning in the ginormous Webster’s Dictionary that sat in the book case at the bottom of our stairs. I would get on the bus and ask my friends, “Do you know what pulchritudinous means?” Between that and challenging the boys to push-up contests at the bus stop, I mostly sat alone on those bus rides to school. But that just meant I had more time to make up stories.
I went on to many other endeavors in life, including the world of figure skating, and later, earning a black belt in martial arts. Though I was a mom at seventeen, I did manage to finish school and somehow made it through college, earning a degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant. After nineteen years, two sons, a divorce, and some fairly lean years, I found that it’s true what they say about life beginning at forty. It was about that time when I reunited with the love of my life and worked my way to owning my own business as a Massage Therapist, Personal Trainer, and Yoga Instructor—all of my favorite things. To make my bliss complete, I moved out to the Berkshires and found my muse waiting for me there amongst the lilacs and humming birds.
I now write Extraordinary Stories of an Average Teenage Life in order to share hope with others, especially teens, that no matter how tough life gets, there is always a bright spot waiting just around the corner. My published books include the award winning YA Novels, HEAVEN IS FOR HEROES, ON THIN ICE, and SAVAGE CINDERELLA, available through Amazon and B&N Booksellers.

Interview:
What is one book everyone should read?
THE FOUR AGREEMENTS by Don Miguel Ruiz
If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Miss Mega Multi-tasker
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I’d like to be able to be in two places at one time. That would be very useful in this business.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
I love the combination of maple walnut, butter pecan, and coconut chocolate chip.
If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
I’d like to meet my father. I found out when I was in my mid-thirties that the dad who raised me was not my biological father. When I finally tracked my bio-dad down, I found that he had died six months before. It would have been great to meet him at least once.
Night owl, or early bird?
Both, these days. I work until midnight or later almost every night and I’m up by 7 a.m.
Skittles or M&Ms?
Definitely M&M’s (peanut is preferred), but I’m still waiting for them to be made with dark chocolate.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Genetically altered teens in a post-apocalyptic world, an action-packed journey, two loveable wolves, and a budding romance—what’s not to love?
What is your dream cast for your book?
Emma Watson would make a great Lily Carmichael, Chord Overstreet (Sam, from Glee) as Will Callahan, and some unknown thirteen-year-old boy with dark curly hair and black eyes to play Lily’s brother Zephron.
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I loved Nancy Drew mysteries in grade school. I’d read them all by the time I was in fifth grade.
Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Lily’s theme song would be Kelly Clarkson’s Dark Side.
What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Listen to your gut; trust your instincts.
What is your favorite Quote?
“Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints.”
How do you react to a bad review?
I seethe for about ten seconds, then I examine it for anything constructive, then I let it go and move on. I’ve reduced the amount of attention I give a bad review to about 30 seconds of my time.
What do you do in your free time?
Is this a trick question? If I had free time, I’d be kayaking, gardening, or reading.
Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....
OUTLANDER, by Diana Gabaldon…brilliant!
Waning Moon by P.J. Sharon
In the year 2057, in a post-apocalyptic world where a global shift threatens the remainder of the population with extinction, sixteen-year-old genetically enhanced Lily Charmichael has more immediate problems. Her uncle is dying of cancer and her healing abilities are ineffective against the blood ties that bind them. In order to find a cure, Lily must leave the protection of her quiet town and journey into the trading city of Albany, all while avoiding the Industry, an agency that would like nothing better than to study and exploit her abilities.
Seventeen-year-old Will Callahan has been searching for his father since severe storms blasted through the Midwest, killing his mother and sister. When he learns that his father may be in the city, he catches a ride with Lily, a girl who has come to his rescue more than once. As the two embark on a dangerous journey, the attraction between them grows. But the secrets Will’s keeping could put her in far more danger than traveling to the city with him, and if he was any kind of man, he would have told her to run the minute she found him.

Thanks so much for having me today. I look forward to comments from your readers, although my day job as a massage therapist will mean I'll be checking in throughout the day between clients. Just imagine that you're getting a virtual massage from me as the day goes on. It's not quite like the real thing, but it might make you stop for a moment and take a deep breath:-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting today.

You're welcome, Kit. It was fun answering some not-so-standard questions. Good luck in the drawing!
ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting story line. YA's will love it. I think that I would love it too.
ReplyDeleteThank you for saying so. Most of my readers for my contemporary YA novels have been adults who enjoy reading YA. There seems to be a growing number of crossover readers, and with the success of Dystopian YA books like The Hunger Games, the genre lines have been blurred even more so. Personally, I love reading YA for its freshness and not so rigid structural constraints. First loves, adventure, and the promise of a hopeful future are universally appealing themes.
ReplyDeleteYA really seems more sophisticated and intriguing these days!
ReplyDeleteeai(at)stanfordalumni(dot)org
I agree. I think teens expect more edginess and sophistication in their books and authors are delivering. One of the hallmarks of well written YA is that the author finds a balance between keeping the voice real and not talking down to teens.
DeleteWow, this was a very informative interview. Good luck with the book!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Heather!
DeleteI really enjoyed the interview and the book sounds awesome! Thanks for the giveaway!

DeleteI enjoyed the interview! I want to read this book. I may be beyond YA but the story is my kind of book and genre.

DeleteI have really been getting into distopian books lately and this one sounds great! I also loved the interview! Thanks for the interesting post :D
ReplyDeletemegnate at telus dot net
Hey Meagan. I think a lot of people can sense big changes coming our way and are curious as to what the future holds. Reading Dystopian is a way to look into the imaginations of authors and get a glimpse of the possibilities. Of course, if we painted a rosy picture, the book would be boring, LOL. Grim realism is so much more interesting, don't you think? Lest you think it will all be gloom and doom, all of my stories end with a hopefully ever after that are very satisfying:-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting me today. I had a blast with your readers and will randomly pick a winner for ON THIN ICE. All names will also go into the drawing for a $25 gift card to either Amazon or B&N. Good luck everyone, and thanks for participating.
