Interview:
When you were little,
what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
Wonder Woman. If that didn't work out, then I wanted to be
a writer.
If you had 24 hours
alone how would you spend it?
I'd write! And then I'd sleep a full eight hours. Maybe nine.
Favorite Food?
Sun-warmed fresh
raspberries, also pizza.
Skittles or M&Ms?
M&Ms... though my
candy of choice is Raisinets. They're my
muse.
What is your favorite
flavor of ice cream?
Black raspberry. I think the best tastes are the ones that
immediately summon up warm, fuzzy memories.
Every time I taste black raspberry ice cream, I think of summers as a
kid and weekend evenings at the local ice cream place, the Dairy Hut.
(That ice cream place
actually appears in two of my novels -- it's a witch's house in INTO THE WILD,
and it's the place where a vampire is stabbed by a were-unicorn in DRINK, SLAY,
LOVE. So I guess it clearly looms large
in my subconscious.)
What inspired you to
want to become a writer?
I think books are
magic. They have the power to sweep you
away from whatever is upsetting you in the real world... and sometimes, they
even have the power to heal you. I
wanted to be a part of creating that magic.
It's the only thing I've ever wanted to do.
If you could meet one
person who has died who would you choose?
My mother's
mother. She died when I was two, so I
don't remember her, but I'm told she was the artistic one in the family. She painted on pretty much every object that
was stationary long enough, particularly plates and chairs. I can't paint with a brush, but I try every
day to paint with words so I like to think I take after her.
What was your
favorite book when you were a child/teen?
ALANNA by Tamora
Pierce.
Who are your favorite
authors of all time?
Tamora Pierce, Bruce
Coville, Robin McKinley, Diana Wynne Jones, Charles de Lint, Guy Gavriel Kay,
Mercedes Lackey, David Eddings, Anne McCaffrey, Diane Duane, Terry Brooks...
Please tell us in one
sentence only, why we should read your book.
You should read
VESSEL if you want to be swept away to a desert land where wolves made of sand
hunt inside storms and serpents of unbreakable glass fly through the sky and
goddesses inhabit human bodies to save their clans and a girl who is destined
to die meets a trickster god...
What's one piece of
advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don't wait until you
have "enough" time to write.
Those glorious stretches of free time that we all dream of are an
illusion -- like closet space, time will always be filled. Steal bits of time from your day right now,
even if it's only fifteen minutes a day, and write!
Thanks so much for
interviewing me!
Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst
In a desert world of sandstorms and sand-wolves, a teen girl must defy the gods to save her tribe in this mystical, atmospheric tale from the author of Drink, Slay, Love.Vessel will be released on September 11, 2012
Liyana has trained her entire life to be the vessel of a goddess. The goddess will inhabit Liyana’s body and use magic to bring rain to the desert. But Liyana’s goddess never comes. Abandoned by her angry tribe, Liyana expects to die in the desert. Until a boy walks out of the dust in search of her.
Korbyn is a god inside his vessel, and a trickster god at that. He tells Liyana that five other gods are missing, and they set off across the desert in search of the other vessels. For the desert tribes cannot survive without the magic of their gods. But the journey is dangerous, even with a god’s help. And not everyone is willing to believe the trickster god’s tale.
The closer she grows to Korbyn, the less Liyana wants to disappear to make way for her goddess. But she has no choice: She must die for her tribe to live. Unless a trickster god can help her to trick fate—or a human girl can muster some magic of her own.
