Author Interview & Book Giveaway: Wings by Pete Abela

Welcome to Author Pete Abela

Pete is an author from the city of Wollongong, just south of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
For most of his adult life, Pete has been a left-brained computer scientist whose love of reading eventually led him to take up writing. Having surprised himself and those around him by getting Wings published, he’s now having fun dreaming up marketing strategies and publicity stunts – tasks he never could have envisaged doing ten years ago. He continues to stretch the boundaries of his right hemisphere and is now working to complete a second novel.
His left brain hasn’t been totally neglected through this process. Pete works as an IT Manager in order to help keep his wife and four kids fed and clothed. When he’s not working, reading, writing or enjoying the company of his family, Pete likes to sneak away for a bit of exercise – either tennis, soccer or a laborious run.
You can find more about Pete at his website and blog (http://peteabela.com). The blog contains a number of really bad jokes. You have been warned.

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Wings, inspired by the lives of two men I admire, is a feel-good novel containing in-depth insights into aviation, World War II and a love story to boot.

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
As a child, I loved reading the Biggles series by Capt. W.E. Johns. As a teenager, the Hobbit was probably one of my favourite books.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Getting a professional opinion on your work can help you short-circuit months or even years of wasted effort. A few simple tips can help you make the transition from ‘gifted amateur’ to ‘published professional’.

What is your favorite Quote?
'My life has been full of terrible misfortunes most of which never happened.' - Michel de Montaigne
It reminds me not to spend too much time worrying about future events.

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
It’s hard to come up with a short list, but my physical book shelf is full of (in alphabetical order) Jeffrey Archer, Desmond Bagley, Bernard Cornwell, Michael Crichton, Dick Francis, John Grisham, Arthur Hailey, Louis L’Amour, Alistair McLean, JRR Tolkein and Jules Verne to name but a few. It’s a very full shelf.

How do you react to a bad review?
I’ve never had a bad review. In fact, I’ve never had a review of any sort. This whole, being a published author thing, is a brand new experience for me. I tell myself that I can’t expect to please everyone so the occasional negative review goes with the territory. In reality, I’m sure I’ll be disappointed but I’ll be trying my best not to get defensive. Breathe.

If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Biggles and the Deep Blue Sea by Capt. W.E. Johns. I have 91 of the Biggles books and need less than ten more to complete the set. Alas, the remaining ones are rare and very expensive. Only one edition of Biggles and the Deep Blue Sea was ever published, making it the Holy Grail for Biggles Collectors. A copy usually sells for $2,000 or more on the odd occasion that it gets listed. I couldn’t imagine what a signed copy would be worth.

What do you do in your free time?
Writing-related matters consume a lot of my spare time. With a wife and four children, I spend lots of time enjoying their company too. I like to exercise, and play soccer, tennis and go for occasional jogs. I don’t watch very much TV.

Give us a glimpse into a typical day in your life starting when you wake up till you lie down again.
Awake at 6AM and off for a run. I usually push the pram and take one of the infants with me. Home by 6:30 and eat breakfast, read the paper and catch up on overnight emails. Shower, make lunches and then it’s off to work. I usually spend half an hour at lunch-time on writing-related activities (writing, editing or publicity). I usually get home from work at about 5:30PM and it’s a crazy couple of hours of dinner, baths and bed-time for the littlies. Once they’re in bed, I usually spend an hour talking to my wife or older kids, an hour or so writing and then I head to bed. Fifteen minutes of reading helps me relax before lights out.

Print or Ebook?
Until three months ago I would have replied with an unequivocal ‘Print’. However, I received a Kindle for my birthday and I love it. Ebook it is. Besides, my book shelves are too full to deal with any new print books.

Summer or Winter?
Summer. The Illawarra region where I live has beautiful beaches, warm weather and plenty of scope for numerous activities.

Spontaneity or Planning Ahead?
I’m a planner from way-back. One of the exceptions to this is my writing which exhibits a combination of these traits. I normally start a novel by writing off the top of my head. However, I can only sustain this for a certain time (usually ten thousand words or so) at which point I have to sit down and plan out the remainder of the novel.

Do you prefer a bunch of small gifts or one big expensive one?
My tastes are relatively simple and I always struggle to nominate a preferred gift. I usually end up nominating a bunch of small gifts – preferably encompassing a pile of books.

Wings – Brief Synopsis

"Wings" tells the story of Walt and his grandson Scott, who both have a fierce longing to fly albeit in vastly different circumstances. Walt - who grew up in the depression - found out first hand that becoming a pilot takes sacrifice and tenacity. When World War II broke out he pestered the RAF for eighteen months before they finally accepted him. Scott spent his childhood listening to tales of his Grandfather's aerial exploits and developed an intense craving to be a pilot. However, the number of people wanting to be a pilot vastly outweighs the limited opportunities on offer.
“Wings" weaves together two tales: one set in war-torn northern England, and the other set in the modern-day Illawarra region of New South Wales. As Scott progresses, his grandfather declines – Walt loses his wife, his sight and his hearing – but throughout these difficulties is still there to offer support and encouragement. With insights into the modern aviation scene and life in the Royal Air Force of World War II, this is a must for anyone who has an interest in history, aviation or simply an old fashioned love story.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:
Just like Awakened, Betrayed has risen above all the other books in this genre. She has created such an amazing world for her Guardians & demons where good and evil are not as simple as it seems they should be.
~J. Whitus (Book Junkies) Walking On Bookshelves

I just love a spunky heroine so I was excited to keep reading about Lil, the demon hunter I got to know in Awakened (book one of The Guardian Legacy series). Walters takes the story and world she built so well in Awakened and adds in an intense plot with lots of twists to make for a strong sequel.
~ Kelli (I'd So Rather Be Reading)

Lil is one of my favorite female leads, with all of the traits that you want a strong female lead to have. She's smart, strong, loyal and doesn't know how to back down.
~ Missy (Missy's Reads & Reviews)

Lil has her work cut out for her in this book and she never failed me once!
There is action in this book as well as a lot of emotional turmoil.
~ Cathy Garcia

EDNAH WALTERS BIO:

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries and fell in love with books

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and epic adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books (unpublished), contemporary and romantic suspense (under the pen name E. B. Walters), and finally YA fantasy (as Ednah Walters).

AWAKENED (2010) is the prequel to the YA series about the Nephilim, The Guardian Legacy series. BETRAYED(book # 1) is now available wherever books are sold, HUNTED (book # 2) will be released in February 2013 and FORGOTTEN (later in 2013).

My adult contemporary with or without suspense is about a west coast Irish-American family series. I've published four Fitzgerald books: SLOW BURN (April 5th 2011), MINE UNTIL DAWN (June 29th 2011), KISS ME CRAZY (Sept 25th 2011) and DANGEROUS LOVE (Jan 29th 2012)

When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children and my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in northern Utah, the setting for my YA series.

Guest Post & Book Giveaway: Phantom by Laura DeLuca

Welcome back to Author Laura DeLuca

Laura "Luna" DeLuca lives at the beautiful Jersey shore with her husband and three children. She has been writing stories for as long as she can remember. Old high school friends would tell you she was always scratching in her notebook instead of paying attention in class and the children she used to babysit for always loved to hear her scary stories at bedtime. In addition to writing fiction, Laura is also the sole author of a popular review blog called New Age Mama. She is an active member of her local pagan community, and has been studying Wicca for close to eight years.

Gothic Belly Dancer Laura “Tempest” Schmidt

One of my favorite scenes in Phantom includes a belly dance routine. I can't say any more than that because I don't want to give away information about a pivotal scene in the story. But I can tell you a little about the amazing woman who inspired the scene. Her name is Laura "Tempest" Schimdt, and she is a world renowned Gothic Belly Dancer.

I consider myself truly blessed to have not only met Tempest, but to have shared Sacred Space with her on a few occasions. About three years ago, I was introduced to Tempest through my best friend and coven sister, Donna. She was taking her belly dance class at a local gym, and convinced me to come along.  Now, I am just about the most uncoordinated person in the world, and learning even the simplest steps was a challenge for me. But Tempest had the patience of an angel, and always took a few extra moments to try to help me get it right. I was only able to go to few classes before I got pregnant with my daughter and was on bed rest. By the time she was born, Tempest had moved, but those few classes were an experience I will never forget.

In addition to taking her class, I also attended a few professional performances that Tempest arranged in our area. The class was fun, but was nothing compared to watching Tempest perform live. When she begins to move, it’s like she is magically transformed into the Goddess herself. Her movements are fluid and graceful. Her costumes (which she often designs herself) are enchanting. She has created her own version of Gothic Belly Dance that is elegant and breathtaking. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Even as a writer, I find it hard to express just how amazing it is to watch her perform.  Tempest is one of the most beautiful women I have had the privilege to meet. It is a beauty that emanates from her soul and is transferred to the fluid movements of her body. All the wisdom of the ages is expressed in the poetic motions of her dance. She is a true artist.

If you would like to learn more about Tempest, you can visit her website, Darkly Dramatic. There you can find dozens of beautiful photos in her gallery. Both the costumes and the poses are stunning!  If you want to learn how to belly dance, she has several DVDs available for purchase. You can also check out Med Devi to purchase her own unique accessory and costume designs.

Phantom

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.
Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.
Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

Author Interview & Book Giveaway: The Gangster's Daughter or Trusting the Law

    Welcome to Author Kendall Evans.
I am a romance writer who enjoys writing Christian romance, sweet romance, and occasionally, non-fiction. Though I'm relatively new to this side of the publishing realm, I've been writing for years under another pseudonym. I've written everything from poetry to epic novels, but my first release as Kendall Evans is my very first foray in 1800's historical. I live near the beach and consider myself blessed to be able to smell the salt of the ocean air and hear the waves crashing over the shore. And watching the sun setting at night over the shoreline is truly breathtaking. I work from home, mostly business consulting and freelance writing (website copy, ads, and the like), and I'm surrounded by wonderful friends and family who continually bless my life.

    http://kendallevans.weebly.com/

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Definitely back in time to the 1920s. I have such a fascination with that time period, and I would love to see Chicago during that time period!

    Night owl, or early bird?
Night owl. I’m usually up until after four in the morning.

One food you would never eat?
    Hominy. Ugh.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I do have another book in the works right now that’s set during the time of the Titanic, and I’m bouncing around an idea right now of a book every decade beginning with 1900 and continuing to 1950 and calling it the Decade Series. We’ll see how that works out.

If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be? Twilight. Forks, Washington, but I would have to be able to have my own choice of the Cullens. Yes, I’m a Twihard and not ashamed to admit it. J

What is your dream cast for your book?
This is a really interesting question, but I’d have to say Ryan Gosling for Paul because he’s rough and absolutely gorgeous, and Natalie Portman for Anna because she looks so sweet and gentle, but she can really play tough when she needs to.

What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
I’m far from an expert, but I would have to say learn how to self-edit. Turning in a manuscript with hundreds of mistakes not only looks bad on the author, but it may result in an immediate rejection.
Just never send an unedited copy of your manuscript to an agent or publisher.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
New Zealand. I may have romanticized it in my mind, but everything I’ve read about it only makes me want to go more. The people, the views, all of it just draws me in.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you want to play the lead role and why?
Kristen Stewart because she reminds me a lot of myself at that age except for Robert Pattinson as a boyfriend. And I think she could play me with the right amount of attitude. Of course, they’d have to have some good make-up people to age her once I got out of my twenties!

Who are your favorite authors of all time?
    Jane Austen

What's the best advice anyone has ever given you? Believe in yourself no matter what the people around you might say.

In your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with?
    Teri Blackstock. Love her books!

    Print or Ebook?
E-book as I absolutely LOVE my Kindle. Next up on my list is a Kindle Fire!

    Horror or Romance?
Romance. I’ve seen maybe three horror movies in my entire life. Too much violence and gore for me.

    City or Country?
City all the way. I like to be close to the malls, to the theaters, and to the bright lights. Too much quiet prevents me from sleeping. J

    Trusting the Law

The last person Anna needs to fall in love with is a police officer, especially since she breaks the law every day. Running a speakeasy wasn’t her first choice, but making money is. With the price of hooch at an all-time premium, the money is more than enough to pay for her uncle’s expensive medication and the bills. She doubts Officer Paul Gordon will see things the same way.
Paul is enchanted with the chestnut-haired woman he runs into on a cold, Chicago street, and that enchantment quickly turns to more. If someone were to tell him she was a criminal, he’d never believe it. Then he sees it for himself. When Anna is ar-rested, he must make a decision—protect her or his badge.

    The Gangster's Daughter

Jack Malone has one mission in Chicago—apprehend notorious gangster, Antonio Donnatelli. It shouldn’t matter that Donnatelli is using his daughter, Maria, to get close to Jack, to find out his weakness. Jack knows the man’s ways, and he can ignore the beautiful Italian lady with her mysterious brown eyes and soft voice. Until the gunfire starts. Then his need to protect her overcomes his duty.

    The First Husband
A savvy, page-turning novel about a woman torn between her husband and the man she thought she'd marry.
Annie Adams is days away from her thirty-second birthday and thinks she has finally found some happiness. She visits the world's most interesting places for her syndicated travel column and she's happily cohabiting with her movie director boyfriend Nick in Los Angeles. But when Nick comes home from a meeting with his therapist (aka "futures counselor") and announces that he's taking a break from their relationship so he can pursue a woman from his past, the place Annie had come to call home is shattered. Reeling, Annie stumbles into her neighborhood bar and finds Griffin-a grounded, charming chef who seems to be everything Annie didn't know she was looking for. Within three months, Griffin is Annie's husband and Annie finds herself trying to restart her life in rural Massachusetts.
A wry observer of modern love, Laura Dave "steers clear of easy answers to explore the romantic choices we make" (USA Today). Her third novel is packed with humor, empathy, and psychological insight about the power of love and home.

    Interiew:
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
The past. Definitely. In college, I actually majored in Medieval Studies because I had this fascination with King Arthur, and knights, and things like that. I’m not sure why I thought that major was a good idea--apparently there’s not a lot of job openings for people who can recite Chaucer by heart. (Although you do see a little bit of that fascination peeping through with the Lady of Shalott/ Lancelot references in LIES BENEATH.)

If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I’d love to be able to fly. I used to have very vivid flying dreams when I was little--so vivid I’d wake up and think they were real. I went to my first day of Kindergarten with a super disgusting black eye because I thought I could fly from the top of the steps down to the breakfast table. Turns out I couldn’t.

One food you would never eat?
Eggplant. I’m a pretty adventuresome eater, but my aversion to eggplant has never left me. Even the name gives me the willies.

    Pet Peeves?
Slow talkers. They. drive. me. up . . . the wall.

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Right now I’m editing the sequel to LIES BENEATH, which is titled DEEP BETRAYAL. It’s a continuation of the story, but told from Lily’s point of view. Then I’ve got a third book to finish out the trilogy. After that, I’ll be working on something completely different. Not sure what yet. I’ve got a couple ideas in the hopper--probably something related to Ireland.

    Lies Beneath

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.
