After being forced to wear lederhosen for the annual holiday card picture, twelve-year-old Chris thinks that the least his parents can do is get him the Tony Hawk skateboard he wants for Christmas. But when he recovers the hand-carved Baby Jesus that everyone thought had been destroyed in a fire the year his Grandma died, Chris realizes that some gifts are even more important than skateboards.
When the author had to discontinue a cherished tradition of reading Christmas stories out loud with his family and holiday guests each week in December, he wrote Finding the Baby Jesus. He had been unable to locate enough meaningful stories that could be read in a single sitting with wiggly children.

Author Kimball Fisher
Kimball Fisher writes novels for young readers. He is also a best-selling business author, professional speaker, and management consultant. Some of his past jobs include: sailboat builder, ghost writer (not as scary as it sounds), illustrator, and factory manager (more scary than it sounds). For fun he builds furniture, stained-glass windows, and writing pens.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities (with minors in English, Asian Studies, and Japanese), and a Master of Organizational Behavior degree from Brigham Young University. He and his amazing wife Reenie live in Portland, Oregon, where they have seen pheasants, coyotes, and a bobcat in their own backyard.
Interview
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
I'd like to visit the Sermon on the Mount and see Jesus teach his followers. I wonder if he looks like I imagine. I'd like to see him smile and it would be wonderful to watch him interact with a child.
If you were a superhero what would your name be?
Super compassionate bald guy. Or, super bald compassionate guy. I'm not really current on superhero naming protocols and am unsure whether to emphasize physical or moral attributes.
If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The power to prevent anything bad happening to kids.
Skittles or M&Ms?
Skittles. One of the secrets to our marital bliss is that I don't like chocolate. Any chocolate that comes to our house goes directly and immediately to my sweet wife.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
Because FINDING THE BABY JESUS will give you about 15 minutes with your family during the holiday season when you can shut everything else out and just think about family, giving, and the true meaning of Christmas.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I've been working on an adventure fantasy for middle-graders called THUNDERBIRD FEATHER. I'm hoping to make it into a four-book series. We'll see. I've included a preview of the first chapter at the end of FINDING.
What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I'm sure that some people make a choice to write, but for me it's more of a compulsion. I feel, quite literally, like I don't have a choice. Sounds like I need therapy, right?
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
I couldn't possibly narrow it down to one, but Scott O'Dell's ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHIN was the first book I remember reading by myself. It really hooked me. After that I read A WRINKLE IN TIME, unable to think about anything else between my evening readings. I loved Frank Baum's WIZARD OF OZ books, too. Used to stay up to the wee hours to finish them. And, of course, THE HOBBIT, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. It became a problem, really. My parents literally locked me out of the house sometimes to make me play outside with the other kids.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Here. Portland, Oregon.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
Oddly, never a writer. I don't think I believed that was possible. But I always liked drawing and wanted to be an artist for a long, long time. Then a lawyer. Then not a lawyer. But that was after I'd been admitted to law school. I've really enjoyed my work as a consultant and trainer, but it turns out that my absolute favorite job is being husband to my sweetheart, Reenie.
Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I don't know how to write anything real that doesn't somehow connect to a past experience or emotion. In that way all characters are me. But in their totality none of them are.
Favorite sport?
College football. My wife and I are huge fans. I love the fall because there is always a game on Saturdays. It's awesome to have one blaring on the TV as background noise while we do our weekend chores.
PC or Mac?
Mac all the way. The feeling I've had for my computers is as close to love as possible for an inanimate object.
Beach or Pool?
Both. On a regular basis. My wife and I crave Hawaii because that is the only question we ask each morning of our tropical vacation.
Shoes or Sandals?
Flip flops. I'm passionate about them. Reenie gave me a cartoon I framed and put up in my office. It shows two sandaled-angels on a cloud. The caption reads: "Oh eternal life is fine, but what I really like is getting to wear flip-flops all the time."
